It is easy on the eyes. My job ask us to grab footage fast from MediaBeacon so its clean design makes it easy to enter in info. I also really enjoy the it saves my log in user name making it easier to click right into looking in. I also enjoy that it is customized towards Showtime being called Redspace. I also like that you can separate the items from image, video and print. Making it easier to make a smaller list to look through. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** It is hard to click through all of the items we have under our profile. It's hard to find specific things. I find that I have to scroll through tons of things that don't pertain to the job or even show that I am looking for. I wish if I was looking for a specific shot or photo from a show that I could have an easier time narrowing down the exact source. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** I think I would tell them that its a good concept but I struggle with finding exactly what I need in a timely manner. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** Looking up older photos and spots. We can be tasked to locate old behind the scenes footage or a spot from a specific season. We also have job numbers that we can look up and we have a better chance of locating those because media beacon locates it based on what it was labeled as. ### 3. Mediabeacon **Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Bianca S. | Production Assistant, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2019 **What do you like best about MediaBeacon?** allows us to organize our assets much more efficiently. where I wasn't able to find other videos, media beacon has allowed me to search for more ambiguous assets with its search function. it allows us to search by show, which is huge, and when we can't find file names from other asset management platforms, media beacon usually helps us find it. the best part is that it allows us to search beyond just series, but across all our assets, like documentaries, movies, sports, spots, and more. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** it's not super aesthetically pleasing, but it does the job. sometimes the loading gets a little funky, it'll choke up a little, but I guess that makes sense considering it's loading up so many videos images, and preview. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** keep your assets organized from the start! if you're managing thousands of videos, this will do the trick **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** asset organization and project management. it helps us take loads off of our servers while also keeping the assets organized and easy to find. where I wasn't able to find other videos, media beacon has allowed me to search for more ambiguous assets with its search function. it allows us to search by show, which is huge, and when we can't find file names from other asset management platforms, media beacon usually helps us find it. the thumb nail preview section helps us find assets quickly and makes things much easier to identify ### 4. We have someone in house that is dedicated to getting everyone trained, so we might have it a little easier than most people, but it is such a good project. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** It does take a long time to get this set up, but like I said in my title, well worth it in the end. I would recommend getting someone who can learn everything there is to know about this before implementing. It can be kind of a beast to tackle at first, but the more you use it, the more you get to know it (just like any software.) **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** Nothing really! We are still in the implementation process. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are in the process of moving from an older filing system to a new one, so this has been a real winner in helping us locate files more easily. We can now have employees access files from anywhere in the world and not have to be connected to an internal server anymore. We have been looking for a switch for a couple years and MediaBeacon has been a lifesaver. ### 6. Everything we once had been excited about does not work as expected. There is nothing in the software that can not be found elsewhere. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** Software: While working with MediaBeacon, I took on a new job of troubleshooting. I wrote up endless reports of features that were not functioning correctly. Countless hours were spend troubleshooting and recording bugs and errors that never got corrected (even after installing 4 different upgrades). Video: The video functionality is NOT ready to be released. If you are considering MediaBeacon for use of videos, you better brush up on your FFMPEG or be ready to purchase an additional transcoding software (Telestream Vantage) that will cost you at least $20k. Customer Service: Our company made the mistake of purchasing MediaBeacon through a re-seller Zenplex. As a re-seller, Zenplex was not knowledgeable enough on the product, their customer service was horrible as they could not communicate clearly or in a timely matter. Every bug found had to be sent through Zenplex before it would get to MediaBeacon engineers. However, first it was my job as the client to prove it was broken and teach Zenplex before it would get passed on. A game of telephone that wasted too many hours. At contract renewal, we tried to drop Zenplex and become a customer of MediaBeacon. However, we were considered too small and MediaBeacon did not want us as a client and told us to stay with their re-seller we were cleary unhappy with. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** Run away. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** We will not be renewing our contract and will be uninstalling the software. The software failed us, but more so the staff at MediaBeacon failed. ### 13. The search filters are very powerful and can truly enhance a search by narrowing and refining the search parameters via filters. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** We dislike the non standard interface elements such as the viewing pane that looks like Windows Explorer but does not work the same way. A general lack of feedback to the user when accomplishing tasks makes it harder to use the program. For example upon upload if the file already exists in the folder the program does not alert the user that it adds the file with a (1) appended to the name. In this case the user will likely not realize what happened and may go back and not reference the latest version. Challenges with converting videos properly have been an issue for us. Large file uploads that are truncated with no alert to the user can cause us to lose data if the original is deleted assuming it is successfully in MediaBeacon. Finally a lack of reporting capabilities on activity is a major flaw. We had to program our own reports by reading the MediaBeacon logs and coming up with what should be basic reporting the system should generate. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** The program is capable, but what we are calling potholes in the interface that users must navigate around add challenge to using it. Be careful when planning to assure you are getting what you need, it seems most of our requests for bug fixes are being pitched back to us as upgrades we can purchase. So for example when we asked about the issue of large files being uploaded and posting to MediaBeacon as partial files with no feedback from the system we were told we could buy a more robust network solution which of course could help but totally bypasses our issue with the MediaBeacon system having integrity for uploading files. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** Storing and retrieving files is our main goal. The abilities to reference visual assets is an advantage of this system. By using the system we have made many of our files more accessible to our team helping leverage more value out of the assets. ### 14. With the proper set-up and dedication before launch, you can really take control of your metadata to serve your specific users' needs. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** The deployment timeline went well beyond initial expectations. Communication from individuals at MediaBeacon was not consistent. They started off strong, responsive and helpful, but as the deployment dragged on they were less available and receptive. We struggled to get complete answers from the proper individuals and were left waiting too many times. Although we ultimately received the necessary information to proceed, it often felt like a task to get what we expected or agreed to. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** Make sure to ask every question you can think of. Leave no questions or concerns unanswered! There were many minor details never uncovered during the discovery phase that causes delays in deployment months later. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** The MediaBeacon interface offers lots of widgets to search, display, save and share content. Setting up the interface to interpret your company's content and metadata was an extremely difficult process., but if done properly, MediaBeacon can offer users multiple options to search and retrieve their content. For customers with a wide variety of users with different preferences, MediaBeacon allowed multiple workspaces for different user groups. ### 15. Can take longer than I would like to rebuild the Revolution Database. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** This product continues to impress as it compares to others on the market. The portal flexibility sets MediaBeacon apart from competitors and allows any company to create custom looks, experiences and use cases for their end users. MB allows you to take it as far as you would like with very little limitations. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** We built a "self-serve" asset workflow for our company saving time and money. Fewer phone calls are necessary. Additionally we greatly ease the burden of metadata entry by automating the majority of the XMP stamping for each file. ### 16. MediaBeacon has supported even the most arcane of requirements as a premedia/print production tool. Most other DAM systems on the market lack the ability to support industrial strength applications, while MediaBeacon continues to chew up high volume batch processes. **What do you dislike about MediaBeacon?** Each new major release of MediaBeacon introduces challenges, with only the bravest and most foolhardy/desperate taking a decision to implement a new version until at least patch release 3 or 4. The new features are usually quite powerful and innovative but code implementation and execution is very uneven. **Recommendations to others considering MediaBeacon:** Assess your requirements for DAM extremely carefully. MediaBeacon is not the best DAM product for online workflows and production, and lacks the type of advanced Web Experience CMS features that several other companies on the market promise. However, as a 'heavy-lifting' tool for working with extreme volumes of images and storage data, you would be hard pressed to find any other tool that can apply to as many requirements as MediaBeacon can. **What problems is MediaBeacon solving and how is that benefiting you?** Industrial high volume image and page production for retail flyer premedia production. We have been able to integrate workflows across multiple partners in the supply chain, and to automate several key processes, providing savings in labor and time. ### 17. Users/Groups/ACL model for permissions and security can be confusing. Updates are often buggy. User based license model.
