It has heaps of spam filtering and security features, which provides you a sense of security when you actually handle sensitive communications. I also like how it tethers with other programs such as our CRM to multiply productivity. That central management of multiple domains is a real plus in making our administrative tasks much simpler. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** The only disadvantage you could consider while using MDaemon Email Server is the slow availability of customer support option. Using the whole platform, I have little troubles, but when we have something more specific, it is difficult to find clear solutions in the documentation. One problem that has been solved is the ability to easily synchronize with CRM and calendar systems that has improved our communication flows. The user interface is quite friendly, meaning that managing multiple email accounts becomes a comfortable process. These have proven to be very beneficial for us, as they have improved the security of our email communications and made our work much easier. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** A disadvantage of MDaemon Email Server is that the program’s performance considerably degrades when dealing with a large number of emails and may include a delay in the delivery of messages. The server is extremely reliable, and is rarely down, which puts our emails at our fingertips. The main functions of the spam filter combined with the virus protection have substantially cut the amount of spam mails, which is a plus in my view. Further, the ability to integrate it with our CRM and Calendar application makes the communication and scheduling of clients and many team meetings much easier. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** What I found unsuitable about MDaemon Email Server is the user interface which is not as natural and smooth as in modern email servers. It's also very easy to manage, and its use of plain-text config files and a flat file message storage system makes it extremely customisable as well ... I can't think of anything I've not been able to achieve with it, even in some complex scenarios. First of all, this is the interface. I'm not going to say that the interface is perfect, but I'll say for sure that it's the best I've ever had to deal with. This applies to both the server management interface and the user interface. The second thing you should pay attention to is the functionality. The server includes almost the entire set of necessary technologies in the field of mail exchange, both in the field of information protection and in the field of flexibility of settings. Separately, it is worth noting the technical support of the product. In the few cases when I had to contact technical support, I did not have to wait long for an answer, and the problem was either solved immediately, or its solution was planned in the upcoming product updates. This software completely suits me and provides everything I need. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** The only thing, perhaps, that I lack in the MDaemon server is a search in logs by date range, well, or I haven't found yet how to do it. It is worth explaining why this functionality is not enough. Suppose that the user sets a task in which he writes that he should have been sent a letter, but he never received the letter, while the user does not know the exact date when this letter should have been received by him. As a result, the mail administrator needs to open a separate log file for every day and search in it. Imagine that the user said that he had been waiting for the letter for the past 20 days. The administrator, in the worst case, needs to open 20 log files sequentially. It's inconvenient. But this is probably the only negative that I found in the software product. **What problems is MDaemon Email Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** At first I didn't even know how to answer the question about what problems the MDaemon mail server solves and what benefits it brings. I look at the mail server as a means of solving a specific task or tasks. In my opinion, he has one task - an uninterrupted mail message and he completely solves it. But then I thought a little and realized that there are really a lot of problems: spam, viruses, sending files of huge size, which actually turns the mail system into a file sharing service. All these problems can be solved by means of the MDaemon mail server. To combat spam, the server has validation and antispam functionality, to combat viruses, you can buy an antivirus module or use the Clamav antivirus included in the product, plus it is possible to prohibit the acceptance of attachments by extension, which allows you to exclude executable files from receiving. Unified messaging client for organizations is a plus. MD cloud option is a bit costly for 3rd world countries. Usage statistics reports can be better. We've been using MDaemon since the 90s to diagnose delivery issues with Exchange because everything is beautifully transparent. 2) Security: native support for Geo-IP blocking, automated dynamic blacklisting, the ability to temporarily ban IPs based on excessive authentication failures, deeply granular control of security features... an endless wish-list of well-thought-out features that will make any Exchange admin weep. Truly some of the best security we've ever seen, hands down. 3) Much easier to administer than Exchange - especially certificate management. 4) Stable and robust: we've never seen MDaemon fail completely or corrupt the data as we've seen time and time again with Exchange. We attribute this to the data being stored as individual .msg files in a simple file system instead of an easily corrupted database. You would think having 10s of thousands of files in a single folder would cause MDaemon to choke, and we have seen some performance issues, but so far nothing deal-breaking. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** 1) Missing feature: Exchange provides a synchronization mechanism for e-mail address autofill lists in Outlook. Mdaemon does not as of version 21.0.2.1 (our current installed version) even when using the MDaemon Outlook connector. We hope Alt-N will address this oversight before Microsoft kills on-prem Exchange in 2025 so we can migrate clients to MDaemon without getting client complaints. This is the only feature missing for us to move forward. 2) Very rare but persistent bug: every few months we see an instance of an email sent using the MDaemon Connector where either the email contains strange corrupt characters or the body of the email is blank. We've brought this to the attention of support but so far the problem remains. 3) The MDaemon Connector is VERY intolerant of bad connectivity and tends to freeze Outlook when the internet connection is spotty. 4) As mentioned in point 4 in the positive section, there is room for improvement in the performance department. It could be addressed by limiting mail items stored in a folder to less than 9999 items and automatically storing addtitional items in a folder tree. Inbox.0001, Inbox.0002, etc. **Recommendations to others considering MDaemon Email Server:** MDaemon is a well-engineered, robust, mature product with security features wildly superior to anything else we've evaluated. **What problems is MDaemon Email Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** MDaemon's easily accessed logging in real time is an excellent diagnostic tool that allows us to troubleshoot mail delivery problems on other platforms. Management takes some getting used to, but needed functions aren't buried too deep. As a server for imap and pop clients it is a nice piece of software. Cost is reasonable. Support is good for the issues they have fixes for. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** The MDaemon connector for outlook leaves a lot to be desired. Undo frequently fails. Sorting and searching frequently fail. As mailboxes get bigger with many attachments, the client gets buggier and buggier. Part of Alt-N's response is to add an exclusion to the directory of your email store. I consider this practice unacceptable. As someone who migrated from Exchange Server, I was able to reasonably replicate most of the Exchange features we used. What I could not do was provide my outlook users those functions and a stable platform. We are moving back to Exchange. **What problems is MDaemon Email Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** We had a 12yr old exchange server and needed to replace the hardware and software. The total cost to implement madaemon was less than 20% of the cost to implement an on-premises exchange server. It fulfilled most of our email needs except for edge cases ... of course, edge cases are mostly upper management who insisted we implement the less expensive option. Whatever is happening on your mail server, you'll be able to trace exactly what is going on, when, and where. Nobody likes pouring through thousands of lines of log files, but all mail administrators know that it's part of the job, and you'd rather have all the data there ready for you when you need it. MDaemon gives you the intel you need. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** Some of its components can be a tad unstable at times (i.e., content filter engine getting stuck at 99% CPU and requiring an application restart), but on a server that's up 24/7, this happens seldom and is only a minor annoyance. Also, we have had slight issues with one of the antivirus engines the product employs (it uses two concurrently). The above problems have been relatively easy to deal with, and MDaemon's support was very helpful. **Recommendations to others considering MDaemon Email Server:** Even if you don't use it for full-blown mailbox access, using it as a perimeter/edge gateway in concert with another product like Microsoft Exchange is excellent. **What problems is MDaemon Email Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** Again, the intelligence factor is critical. Sometimes clients need to know where their email is going or why their clients claim they haven't received something. Being able to tell my clients with absolute certainty that the message reached the destination and the problem isn't on their end is wonderful and gives them confidence in their systems and our support. I especially enjoy the very easy and straightforward server management it provides. We have also used Microsoft Exchange and, without any hesitation, will always choose Mdaemon over Exchange. There is really no comparison when it comes to ease of management and disaster recovery. I also love the fact I can watch, in real time, email flow and server handshakes. This makes it extremely easy to troubleshoot mail flow issues between servers. The logging is also extremely thorough. Also, the fact that all messages are stored as standard text based .msg files means it is extremely simple to backup and restore mailboxes and perform disaster recovery (if ever needed). Lastly, there is the price advantage. Mdaemon pricing simply blows all other comparable options out of the water. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** Honestly, there is nothing I dislike about Mdaemon. It performs exactly as needed and is extremely powerful. **What problems is MDaemon Email Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** We prefer to have our own in-house email server and the same for our clients (when practical). Mdaemon is the perfect solution for rock solid in-house email hosting. Setting up and configuring a mail server is complex, but the MD server gives the administrator complete control over everything. The server supports SpamAssassin, so the administrator has complete control over the spam processing. **What do you dislike about MDaemon Email Server?** If you are new to setting up a mail server, then the MD support team will answer all your questions - they are very helpful. **What problems is MDaemon Email Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** The mail server supports all the business users, and lets accounts be configured and setup for users all over the world. I find the business world and what I call the old dogs, want to use outlook, in my optinion, Microsoft makes sure that their products work best with themselves. I see Google Mail are faced with the same problem as Novell Groupwise and MDaemon with the business clients, the outlook client. In short, the MS Office suite is the tide email message platforms are fighting.
