## MAMP Reviews
  ### 1. Dont waste money buying this garbage

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Muhammad U. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 13, 2024

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Its easier to use different PHP version for different projects.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I purchased MAMP Pro version 6.9, and I must say, my experience has been extremely disappointing. The software barely offers any meaningful improvements or new features compared to previous versions. The so-called "fixes" and minor UI changes are not worth the additional cost they're asking for the update. It feels like a blatant money grab, with little regard for actual product advancement.

For those considering investing in a local development environment, I highly recommend trying Laravel Herd Pro instead. It's a better alternative that provides more value for your money. Save yourself the frustration and avoid this product.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Multi-PHP versions, helpful to have a different environment for different projects

  ### 2. No support for current software versions.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 30, 2023

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Easy to install, configure and add virtual hosts and SSL.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

MAMP, even the Pro version does not provide on going support for current software. MySQL 5.7 is EOL on Oct 31, 2023. MAMP PRO doesn't provide support for MySQL 8.x. I've emailed MAMP team requesting support and the only response that that it would come with the new version. No dates or timeline for this new version. As a developers tool, this is completely unacceptable, especially as a paid product within the license period.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP Pro enables easy setup and configuration of a local PHP development enviroment. But, without the support of current software, even at the paid PRO level, this is not a viable option.

  ### 3. MAMP Is the Way to Go for Testing and Development

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Devon D. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 15, 2022

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I like that this software allows me to build and develop websites, including WordPress, PHP, and local HTML projects, where I can test them and see what they would look like and how they would behave before I launch them online. The software also makes it easy to run extended operations that usually with time out on the server without this restriction when doing it on my local machine.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I don't particularly appreciate that there is a learning curve involved with using this software. It's not a steep learning curve, but it does require some set up and remembering preferences. An example of this would be if I choose a specific folder to host the website files; it's not the same folder as the one hosting database files. Again, this isn't that big of a headache, but if I had to say that there was something I disliked, this would be it.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP allows me to test websites and develop projects in a time-saving manner. This software enables me to fully develop high-functioning projects that I can run in real-time, with actual results, as if they were live online. As a result, MAMP is saving me not only time but it's making project management a lot more efficient, and I'm able to deliver better satisfaction to my clients.

  ### 4. Simple and easy way to get a local web server on your computer

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 08, 2022

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Easy to install and set up a local web server for local development on your computer. It's also great that there is a free version of MAMP.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I wish it was a little easier to enable more PHP versions (perhaps from preferences), not a big deal but might be difficult to find for new users.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty when configuring settings in MAMP, you'll need to manually edit some files in order to enable/disable features instead of using a UI.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy way to set up a web development server on your computer for local development.

  ### 5. A complete local web development environement

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rui S. | Software engenire, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 22, 2021

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

MAMP saves me a lot of time providing me with a one click solution to have PHP, MYSQL, APACHE, PEARL, RUBY, NGINX and SSL certificates running on my Mac. No more tedious command line installs... say goodbye to homebrew.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

There's really nothing I dislike about MAMP they even have a free version that provides all the essential features. So I don't have nothing to criticise not even an improvement to sugest.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

The Pro version is worths every cent

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Setting up and keeping up to date a local web development and testing environment on a Mac computer can be tricky and time consuming. With MAMP right after installation everything is there for you. Python, Ruby, Pearl, PHP, MYSQL, APACHE, NGINX out of the box. Then I can syncronise my local environment with the production or staging server with Import and Export tools that includes files and databases. MAMP also take care of my local SSL certificates so I can test local websites with SSL encryption. In resume it's really a time saving app, and I happily pay for the pro version.

  ### 6. My go-to solution for building WordPress websites locally

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2021

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

What I like the best about MAMP is the convenience of the application. Setting up a local PHP/MySQL test server with a WordPress installation is a breeze. Working with MAMP on my Mac for building websites locally saves me time to get started with the building side of development.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

My main complaint has to do with the free version of the application vs the Pro version. The free version puts all of the projects under a single localhost domain which can get messier when dealing with multiple test installs. I highly recommend upgrading the Pro version so you can isolate your client/projects and have more flexibility when using the application.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use MAMP from the start of a web project so I can play with ideas locally without needing a domain or hosting package. I also use it to test new features on existing sites. I download a current backup of the site and can migrate it to MAMP and test things to see how they'll work without jeopardizing my live site.

  ### 7. MAMP is a really great tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joey A. | Chief Creative Officer / Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 16, 2021

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

It's really easy to set up a local environment and get up an running with web development.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Sometimes it takes a while for it to start up. It could be that I'm impatient but starting and stopping the servers can be quite a bit of time to wait.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

I would say to just get it. It's a very fair price for the quality of the product.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not really solving any problems. IT really just makes my work flow a lot easier. It gives you the ability to set up a local host and local database in a matter of seconds as well as setting up SSL certs on the host in order to work with API's like Stripe and Shopify.

  ### 8. A Must for any Web Developer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marli E. | Web Designer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2020

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Well, first of all, it's a free platform you can download on either Windows or Mac. Yes, there is a premium version, but I have only worked with the free one. I first downloaded this around 4 years ago, and it completely helped me streamline my website development for my clients. Now I can easily create databases and different site mockups offline for multiple clients. I mainly work with the Wordpress platform and it's so easy to set up and then transfer to live.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I haven't found too much or anything really that I dislike. If anything yes it might take up space on your computer but once you finish a project you can easily delete it. I mainly use this to help me create Wordpress websites. I can only access my files though on the computer where the program is on and where the files were created, which sucks that I cannot access them anywhere but it's not too much of a loss.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Make sure that the website you download this on has plenty of space and runs quickly because it is a platform that can take up a good amount of space on your machine. Once you complete a project, just delete it so you don't slow your computer down.

I work with a Mac so the process was pretty simple. The first thing you must do to be able to create a website with MAMP is to set up a database, it's pretty simple but if you do not know, there are plenty of free well laid out tutorials out there that can walk you through the process.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

First, it's cost-effective. Because it is a free platform it makes it easy for anyone with their own computer to download it themselves. If you are a novice or experienced designer, this is a great tool to have in your arsenal. This is great to help you create a new website that is not ready to be launched yet. Or if you already have an established website and are looking to redesign it, this allows you to work on a new design offline without interrupting what you currently have live.

This is helping work on multiple websites at a time in one place, I don't have to worry about some monthly membership so it helps me keep business costs down.

  ### 9. Mamp - A great localhost tool!!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Prasad K. | QA Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2020

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I have been using MAMP PRO for over a year now and I am really happy with the performance and quality for the product as a whole. MAMP is easy installation, work as advertised, flawlessly. Good, thorough documentation online, and plenty of features to configure for the different tasks.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Well, I just hope for more easy-instal packages & quicker response from developer and responsive when contacted.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Mamp is very very beneficial and I would recommend it to all Developers & QA Engineers who are into development to get relevant quality outputs.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mamp really helps me in testing my webpages stability and response to provide me desired results. A server is needed to execute the dynamic, server-side code and turn it into HTML, this means you absolutely need a test server to preview and test the various aspects of a website. So its very beneficial in my day to day job.

  ### 10. waste of time and money

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 20, 2021

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The idea. In theory it would be great if it worked and was built like a Pro software which you can upgrade from one version to the next without everything being reset to default.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The execution. As mentioned on what I like best, this thing is a joke. If they dropped the priced by 70% and removed the word pro from it, maybe, I said maybe, it would be worth it.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is suppose to be a time saver by providing a good GUI to something otherwise tedious to do by hand.

  ### 11. A little janky, but still the best option

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 30, 2019

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

MAMP makes setting up local environments a lot easier

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

MAMP is unreliable, crashes often, and is very difficult to update

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It saves a lot of time when setting up local dev environments

  ### 12. localhost saved my life

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Billy B. | Senior PHP Developer, Co-Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2020

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

easy setup and managing the application is a breeze.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

needs a walk thru when using the application to introduce buttons and ui that details how, what, and where to click to run everything . live walk thrus.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

first choice for localhost

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

running localhost before pushing code to development allows me to code qt my pace and really dig deep into code to understand whats happening under the hood of the application getting built. mamp makes all of that possible

  ### 13. My favourite PHP/MySQL developing tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alessio A. | Senior IT consultant - Solution architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2019

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I love MAMP beacuse:
 - it is easy to download, install and run up
 - also you can configure PHP and MySql in a very easy way: you can change ports and server addresses in few seconds using its intuitive control panel
 - it's a really complete tool: it has everything you need to develop using HTML, PHP and MySQL; you can install Wordpress, PrestaShop and other similar platforms
 - it can be used on MAC computers

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

At the moment there is nothing I dislike about this software. I prefer it instead of other similar software (for example his brother XAMPP that I use on my PC with Windows) beacuse it is simple to be configured and it seems a little bit more stable than other MAC tools.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Use it if you are a Mac user and you are searching for an environment to develop web applications based on PHP and MySQL. Use it instead of other software (e.g. XAMPP) because it's very easy to download, install and run up. You can configure PHP and MySql server ports and server addresses simply using the control panel, in few seconds. It's a really complete tool.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use MAMP to develop websites based on HTML, PHP and MySQL. I use it also to implement Wordpress blogs and PrestaShop e-commerce: it is also fully compatible with these software. With MAMP I can do it on my MAC computer in a rapid and easy way.

  ### 14. SImply the Best PHP Server Environment on Mac OS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2019

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The ease of use, including installation of all required tools, such as PHP, MYSQL, and PhpMyAdmin. Being able to quickly change PHP version or server root also makes the need for virtual hosts unnecessary, unless you need to run more than 1 website at a time, which is unlikely during development.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The constant bombardment of ads on the free version, but I know this is a necessary evil and comes at the price of being able to use the software for free.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If your looking to setup a PHP Development environment, then look no further than Mamp.. If you need the power user options, then consider upgrading to Mamp Pro.. However The free version does everything I need it to do, but I only work with PHP a very little amount of my time in my current job role.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mamp allows you to quickly spin up a PHP dev environment, allowing you to create new dynamic web pages without the need for paying for a remote server. This greatly speed up the process of development, and being able to administer your databases with PHPMyAdmin is a great addition.

  ### 15. I like MAMP because it is an open source and it is free.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2020

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I love that it is free. It is also easy to use and installation is not difficult.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

It can be slow sometimes, but overall, it is pretty good.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mamp helps you build a website when you are just starting out.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jayson A. | Digital Developer/Designer , Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 20, 2019

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

it makes your pc act like a server for a website for free. it is great for developing websites and if you need to edit your website because it is offline. It is now on windows and I feel is more friendlier than XAMP.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

when downloading it you automatically download the pro version too even though I feel the free version does everything you need already

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

It is a great tool for things like wordpress and Django

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

creating websites on my macbook, I can also develop websites offline because it does not require the internet

  ### 18. Stable and Free

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

It is stable and you can use free version

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I can't think of anything about it. I am using it with love.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If your time and money is important you must choose the MAMP

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using it when i making websites especially Wordpress and learning PHP on localhost. Firstly i make websites in my local machine, making test then i upload them a hosting.

  ### 19. Great for local Wordpress development, or any kind of "LAMP" stack applications

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joel H. | JavaScript Web Developer & Consultant | Freelance, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 06, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

MAMP allows you to easily set up a local development environment using Apache, Nginx, PHP, MySQL, Redis, Python, Perl, Ruby, and more. You can easily install Wordpress, set up a MySQL server, and get to developing in minutes! It makes it very easy to develop WP sites locally then deploy them to a remote server which has always been one of the biggest headaches for Wordpress developers. You can also run any version of PHP, MySQL with a simple click of a button–restart the web servers and go!

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The pricing structure doesn't make a lot of sense to me. You pay for x number of licenses which, to their credit, do not expire, BUT (and this is a big 'but'–and not in a good way) they make major releases every 2 years. I initially bought MAMP Pro 4 for ~$60-70 USD and when I opened the application one day, I was notified of the release of MAMP v5, so I clicked "Install Update". Unbeknownst to me, this was a paid update. There was no indication in the update dialogue that this required a new license, so when I installed the update, I was asked to enter a new license key. Furthermore, I had tremendous difficult even locating the v4 installer so that I could downgrade and in doing so, I lost all my settings and configured hosts. I emailed support (not my most diplomatic email, admittedly) and was coldly instructed to either purchase MAMP Pro 5 upgrade (which dissolves your v4 licenses) or downgrade to keep my license. They offered no discount or coupon–something that nearly every other independent software company has been happy to do in the past, often without even asking.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

MAMP is essentially the macOS version of "WAMP" (for Windows) or "LAMP" (for Linux). I have always hated configuring Apache, PHP, SQL databases–but this tool makes it stupidly simple and intuitive.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP provides a great environment and GUI for running local instances of Apache (httpd), Nginx, MySQL, and PHP with support for Python, Perl, Ruby, and other CGI/web languages. It's very easy to manage your local MySQL databases with phpMyAdmin, although you can use Sequel Pro or MySQL Workbench if you wish.

  ### 20. All in one platform for web development

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Boris A. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 28, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The best thing I like in MAMP is that the software includes all necessary tools inside the one APP. There is no need to install each software separately like MySql, PHP, Apache MAMP provide all in one platform which makes the life of the developer easier. I also like the user interface which is very simple and intuitive. You can easily create as many virtual hosts as you wish within a few clicks.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I would really like to have some extra servers inside the MAMP as well like Redis, MongoDB, etc. There are some other server management platforms which allow you to integrate servers as a separate package into the server management platform so you can control everything from a single place.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

All web developers need a good environment to deploy their work. MAMP gives all the necessary tools which can be used for creating high-quality web projects. MAMP give all the major version of the scripting languages so you can test your app with compatibility with an old and new versions and another best thing is that you can switch between the web servers like Apache and Nginx.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before the deployment of the project into the live environment we need to test it locally MAMP is doing this job just great. We don't need to have any extra administrators to make everything work. It also gives a very easy interface to switch between the development environments or setup a new one for a particular case.

  ### 21. Not a Fan

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 16, 2019

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Its easy to use and pretty straight forward... until it stops working.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The SQL server would stop running. It happened to me twice already and both times near completion of the website. I tried all the online forums and googled answers but nothing got it to run again and I had to restart the whole entire website. Just wanted to warn anyone trying to run it. First time my laptop died and it was my fault. Supposedly the databases crash if your computer dies. I tried everything to recover it didnt work. Happened again with properly turning off the databases everytime. I gave up on this program.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No benefits I have seen

  ### 22. Must Have for Web Developers

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 04, 2019

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Allows me to easily setup Apache, MySQL, PHP on my Mac

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The cost. Would be better if it was little lower

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Able to test and develop locally on my Mac. The benefit is I don't have to push code to a server to test/view a project I am working on

  ### 23. love the simplicity of one app

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Steven M. | Co-Founder & CTO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 08, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I like that you can setup an apache/mysql/php stack very easily. I also like that you can provision sites from the UI without having to go in the apache settings, and use different versions of php in each site.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

At times it seems a very slow app when it's launching or stopping the applications.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

UI design could be better. I don't like the upgrade options that we have to pay every so often for a new version of the software.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It lets our developers quickly come up to speed by having a unified enviroment with multiple sites.

  ### 24. So easy to get a local server up and running

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The simple interface makes getting a server up and running so simple. A click of a button gets your Apache and MySQL servers running, and then you've got a folder where all your 'sites' can live. Everything is customizable, so if you're more familiar with server stuff, then you can set it up however you like. But if you're not, MAMP make it really easy to get your site up and running locally.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

It's an extra app to have loaded on your machine. There's not much to dislike, it's a simple product that does what it's supposed to really well. I'm sure if you're more server-savvy, then this might be a bit basic, but for us front-end devs, it's pretty sweet.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Use this if you're not super comfortable with servers in general. Really easy to set up and use, and if you are more server-savvy, all of the settings are customizable, just like any other type of server.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use MAMP daily. All my sites in development run on it, as well as any sites that are getting updated. Simple, easy to use, would recommend for simpler sites.

  ### 25. Straight forward and productive

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luke D. | Software Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I like how easy it is to get sites up and running with access to a MySQL database and a PHP dashboard.
The software allows you to specify where your websites are located. You can easily drop WAR files into the source location and they will automatically be unpacked and displayed. I also enjoyed the MySQL database and functionality. The setup is so fast and easy to get running that there is little to no reason why you would choose anything else.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The startup web page could use a little work to bring it up to the modern look of the rest of the application. For as elegant and well designed the rest of the application is designed, you would think that the main website that lists all of your resources would be designed a little better. It looks as plain as the simple version that ships with Apache.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

It helps to have a basic understanding of all the technologies that are brought together by MAMP. You should be capable of running SQL queries and commands, but the PHP Admin console provided will automatically script them for you if you don't have any experience with that. MAMP also allows you to specify the location of your sites folder in case you already have one set up.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can easily deploy multiple Wordpress website versions and spin up different databases that can be exported easily

  ### 26. Easy server management for dev or production

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris H. | Vice President of Operations & Senior Software Developer, Transportation/Trucking/Railroad, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 18, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I've used MAMP pro in two distinct ways... 1) to start my development servers on my dev machine and 2) to run a home server and host multiple websites. MAMP handled both perfectly. Setup is simple and all you need to do is check a few boxes to get a server up-and-running. There's no other solution for getting a Mac server up and running quicker. Especially if you don't want to mess around with the native APACHE setups.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

You are not allowed to setup a wildcard alias on a domain name. This is my largest gripe about the software. Sometimes it's useful to be able to setup a single host and just point all traffic no matter the subdomain to it. MAMP will not allow that.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

When you get MAMP Pro setup point your directory to a better one than the default within it's application folder. Much better to manage when the folder is simpler to find and similar to a server setup.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP solves the need for multiple developers to get a development environment setup quickly and also manage that environment easily.

  ### 27. MAMP is incredibly useful for working locally.

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I like how fast and easy MAMP is to use. It makes developing database websites a quick and fairly painless process. You simply open the application and you're good to go.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

There isn't really anything I dislike about MAMP. If I had to pick something I would probably say it can be a little difficult to understand the file locations if you're looking to customize any of the PHP or Apache settings.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If you're looking for a quick and easy solution for local development that requires MySQL and Apache, then MAMP is definitely a good choice. It will require some research if you need to change any of your custom PHP.ini settings.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use MAMP for local development. It makes it very easy to develop locally. I like the fact that I do not have to wait for files to upload to the server to see the changes I've made.

  ### 28. Well Written Web Development Stack

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Richard M. | Operations Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 08, 2017

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The are a lot of environments you can set up from this one app. You can choose Apache or Nginx for your server, many different versions of PHP, PHP accelerators and it does a fairly good job controlling your hosts file. You can even preinstall a nice selection of common web platforms from WordPress to Magento and Drupal.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

You can run into difficulties with competing versions of PHP, Perl or Ruby on your local machine via the command line and it may require some voodoo to get things straight. As with all of these stack apps, DNS cache can make some installations balky unless you clear DNS cache which can be different for different versions of Mac OS. None of this is a crisis and can be solved easily with a look around Stack Exchange. Also, there aren't nearly as many different packages for easy install as AMPPS for example.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

For Mac, MAMP Pro is very solid. AMPPS is free, though, and can pretty much be horsed into doing much of what MAMP can do. If you are just playing with this kind of thing, try AMPPS first and see if it is something you'll be spending a lot of time on. I like MAMP for its thoroughness and can make it do what I need it to although I wish I didn't have to know so much command line stuff to make it play nicely with the Mac's own versions of PHP, etc.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This is my go to for getting sites to beta stage. I have also used MAMP to migrate large data sets from obsolete CMS's to something like Drupal or WordPress. I like that you can change the PHP versions easily so you can closely mimmic your web host. One especially difficult thing I work with is testing Drupal and getting it to behave with Drupal Commerce. This can take a lot of command line coupled with playing with code. Likewise, I have been testing Magento's latest offerings and getting used to the much more command line driven approach it has.

  ### 29. MAMP PRO Worth every penny

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 02, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Very simplified workflow, especially the ability to add extras like WordPress.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Sometimes buggy - There have been a few occasions that I've had to kill my mamp install and reinstall.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

I've considered using other tools, but I've not seen any tool that advertises features I would need that MAMP PRO does not provide to me.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP Pro has simplified our workflow by allowing us to quickly create and share projects within our network. This is great for workflow on local sites.

  ### 30. Great app for managing local web projects

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2018

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

This is such an easy system to make an Apache and PHP environment accessible and usable. Instead of having to edit system files directly, this allows for super easy configuration of ports for all my projects.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Some of the settings are a bit ill-defined, or in an unexpected place. It can take a little bit of time to get oriented to where everything is.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Excellent option for those who do not want to spend the time (or KNOW how to spend time) in system files to set up test website environments.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP let's me test out the various server-side pieces of my websites locally with ease.

  ### 31. A good easy to use development server.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dustin L. | Web Developer and Programmer, Marketing and Advertising, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2017

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

It is very easy to quickly set up a new development environment for a website.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

It isn't as powerful as using a virtual machine to mimic a webserver as you have less control in the setup and bound to your specific operating system.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If you need a quick and easy way to setup simple local development environments. However, if needing more control over the environment for more robust web applications, you may want to go with a virtual machine instead.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing multiple local development environments.

  ### 32. Web Developers Best Friend

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Not enough documentation, need more to help solve issues.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Quick easy testing nd development of little side projects.

  ### 34. Hassle-free local stack!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ethan S. | Product Manager & Program Director / AskNature, Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 08, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

MAMP was my best friend when I initially began developing Wordpress sites locally, and it's still my go-to for simple WP projects. It couldn't be easier to use (open the app and you're good to go!), and there's great documentation readily available online when I need to tweak settings. What do I like best? 1) That I don't even have to think about it. 2) That it useful tools like phpmyadmin really easy to find and use.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I use Virtualbox and Vagrant for larger and non-WP projects where I need more flexibility and control. With the simplicity that makes it great come limitations when demands are more complex.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Great for simple development needs!

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP makes it possible for me to focus on design and development without spending a lot of time setting up local environments for my projects. Over the six or seven years I've been using it, I've probably saved dozens (if not hundreds) of hours compared to the time I'd have spent setting up *AMP stacks using other solutions.

  ### 35. Simple to use web server

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Johan W. | Webdeveloper/ Graphic designer, Media Production, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2017

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The simple interface with customizable functions and different versions of php in a nice package. Its very easy to set up hosts with aliases and create databases.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The many updates with reminder in the start up. Theres no integrated updates so you have to download a large file every time a new update is coming. It's a hassle when you don't have a fast internet connection. I experience the mysql server not starting quite often for no reason.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Try to restart computer and/or reinstall MAMP if you experience problems.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can develop webpages locally and the deploy them with git to a test server.

  ### 36. Must Have Tool for Web Developers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jon P. | Director Of Web Services, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 21, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I've been using MAMP for several several years and have to admit that I switched to another local server application a few years ago that I thought was better. However, now I'm back to using MAMP (MAMP Pro to be exact). They've really improved the user experience and functionality of the app in the latest version. One of the headaches in the past was setting up new virtual hosts. I'd have to manually update multiple system config files, which would take too long and it was easy to mess stuff up. Now I can easily create new virtual hosts directly within MAMP in just a few seconds. It's also easy to configure different development environments for each virtual host. And phpMyAdmin comes with MAMP, which makes it easy to create and modify mySQL databases. The newest version also starts up quickly. Pervious versions and other products take too long to start services.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

It could just be me, but I can't get the SSL feature to work properly. They also make you pay for major updates for the Pro version.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Get the Pro version.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MAMP allows you to run a web server on your local computer to test websites before deploying them on the web. This speeds up the development process by not having to upload updated files to the web every time you want to test something.

  ### 37. Nice tool for local server setup and testing

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** JeriBeth S. | Freelance Web Developer, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 20, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Cross-platform app allows for setup of local server environment for developing and testing on a virtual server. Has option of Apache and mySQL servers. Options include Start/Stop, Ports, PHP, and Web Server. I have mainly used the free version although a Pro version is available from $29-$59 per license. A trial is available, which I've used a wee bit. Pro offers PHP 7.0.10 Pro 4 also offers mobile testing and has its own built in editor. The GUI has been updated and is much nicer and easier to use. For Mac and Windows, but Mac offers a couple extra features. Easy to install WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc with "one click". Pro also offers dynamic DNS to share your projects with clients. Very handy!

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Wish more features came with the free version but the pro version is relatively affordable for what it offers.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If you're serious about web development, get the Pro version. For tinkering and school projects or hobbies the free version should work well for you.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Developing websites locally.

  ### 38. A solid, helpful local server for speedy development

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Taylor M. | Web Designer / Developer, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 19, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

MAMP allows one to easily set up a local web server, often referred to as a LAMP setup (A(pache) M(ySQL) P(HP), but not limited to L(inux)). The ease of us is the strong selling port here. It is not terribly difficult to set up a local server using the command line, but you have to know what you are doing to configure things correctly. MAMP just bypasses that and gets you going through a pleasant visual interface. When running, your local server is preconfigured with phpMyAdmin for managing the mySQL server, and you select a local directory on your hard drive to be the directory for your site. This makes it easy to do both front and back-end development.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

To use MAMP well, you do still have to have a passing familiarity with networking. If you have set up a home network, you'll figure it out just fine. Occasionally you may need to configure, for instance, a port setting.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

At a certain point, it is helpful to learn how to set up a server using the command line or terminal. When you get to that point you'll know. Until then, MAMP will be a big help for speedy development.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My normal workflow with MAMP is for Wordpress installations. In a matter of minutes I can have a ready-to-go installation up and running. It is significantly speedier to develop locally. At the point in the lifecycle that I am ready for client feedback, I use a Wordpress migration plugin to redeploy remotely.

  ### 39. Useful and reliable tool for front-end web developers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dustin M. | Senior Manager, Creative Services / Senior Graphic Designer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I've tried similar products, and I feel like setup and launch is clunky compared to MAMP. In just a few steps you can easily have your dev site up on your local machine and that's great.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

This is such a simple tool that's providing a short list of purposes and doing it well, so there's not much to dislike about MAMP.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating development sites running PHP and MySQL on a local machine for Wordpress or ExpressionEngine. Give you a fully working PHPMyAdmin. I've discovered that it's possible to let other users view the dev site on the local network when MAMP is running which is super useful.

  ### 40. Great product for local development

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jordan H. | CEO, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 09, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The simplicity of setup and use. It's all in the GUI, easy to work. Setting new vhost or database is a breezy

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The new MAMP 4.0 has some instabilities, but I hope that it's due to being first release of new major version

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

At my studio we are using it for local web development. As mentioned above, it's very easy to use and speeds up work. Our workflow is somewhat pivoting around it as one of the core components and tools that we use.

  ### 41. Quick Server-Database-Script Stack for Web Developers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** René R. | Software Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 25, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

It literally couldn't be any easier to get a quick web server stack up and running than with MAMP. Select your home folder, click "start" and that's it.
It comes pre-installed with MySQL, as well as PhpMyAdmin with full root access so there's even an graphical interface for database administration. Perfect for everyone that dislikes using the console/terminal, since you won't need to touch it at all. Everything can be done with a GUI.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Configuration is often a hassle, with the config files hidden in multiple sub-folders. Often it's not exactly clear which config files are being used, a simple display in the panel would improve usability drastically.
The support for different profiles/presets is rudimentary at best, nonexistent at worst, so switching between projects takes a good few clicks longer than it'd need to.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

MAMP is a handy tool to have installed on your development machine, even in its free version. Give it a try!

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When developing for small clients or working on basic web projects, it's often not worth it setting up a whole staging infrastructure. In this case, MAMP cuts down the setup time for getting to work on a small project.
Of course it's not a fully-fledged development environment like a gulp setup, but it's especially perfect for quick tests and adjustments to classic PHP-MySQL-Webapps. It works fine with Wordpress, Joomla, and nearly all other standard PHP apps.

  ### 42. BRILLIANT software for developers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joe C. | Tech Lead, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 07, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The ease of setting up MAMP is attractive for anyone looking for a personal web server solution. For testing, MAMP is perfect as in just a few clicks it deploys a local server environment perfect for testing.

Another fantastic feature is the deployment of a MySQL server too, which allows fast, quick testing of websites that require a database.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The UI of MAMP is a little unintuitive, but nothing that you can't get past. The software is designed to be a practical, fast solution for developers and that's exactly what it is.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Go for MAMP. It is incredibly easy to use and is as fast as anything! I believe it's the easiest local web server software.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Speed is essential in the web industry, so MAMP cuts the time taken setting up local apache and SQL servers in a simple, one click solution.

  ### 43. Great Tool for GUI usage

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Entertainment | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 25, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I love the tooling to spin up, see statuses, and manage servers quickly. The ability to have aliases and advance routing in Pro make local dev servers easy to work with. PHPMyAdmin pre-installed make management a breeze!

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I dislike the tooling when apache or mysql has errors. It makes it challenging to debug and manage - this is where I prefer my command line tools. Also, not being able to change versions of tooling is troublesome - emulating a server setup to debug or to build for an older setup with a single package is not able to be done.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

MAMP is an amazing product to get PHP and basic web development environments up FAST! I would totally recommend the tooling to anyone, especially when you don't need to worry about minor versioning of PHP/MySQL/Apache. Overall it allows teams to develop quickly and efficiently.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are constantly trying to ensure our PHP development processes run smoothly without the need to deal with command line tooling or constantly managing multiple versions of software to keep developers on top of their projects. It does make it really nice to have the Pro version for our guys on multiple projects at once - quickly adding virtual servers and managing all the settings for each. For the guys on one project at a time, spin up and directory choice of their dev directory gets them developing on localhost very quickly!

  ### 44. Super easy to setup

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Don D. | Web Developer, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 21, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The ease of use. Setting up an environment is as easy as picking your engine and ports.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

The lack of control. It would be nice if MAMP would allow you to edit your hosts file within.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If you need to get a local dev environment setup quickly on a mac then I highly suggest it.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

enabling me to work locally on development projects.

  ### 45. MAMP - A viable alternative to XAMPP

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matteo M. | Studente, Education Management, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 30, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

MAMP is a great software to have a complete stack and running context for web development: as opposed to more complex tools that require more resources (vagrant + virtual box), for creating simple web application MAMP is more than enough: apache + ngnix, mysql, phpmyadmin and are ready use immediately.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

No cons in particular, perhaps a minimum of slow to reload the server or little flexibility in the log management and space (over 200MB are not a bit too much?)

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

If you want a xampp alternative, this is the best solution I founded in recent years.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Prototyping, testing javascript + php libraries on the fly.

  ### 46. Best way to do LAMP development on OSX

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 08, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

Easy and straight forward to get going. Minimal configuration required, and when required, is easy to find.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Developers shouldn't rely on tools like this as a crutch. You will eventually need to know how to interact with the LAMP stack outside of a GUI tool like this.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Trying to get going as quickly as possible with LAMP development. It is a nice way to be introduced to LAMP development, but you will eventually need to rely on the command line to do the tasks this tool does for you.

  ### 47. Essential product for developers on Mac OSX!

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 09, 2016

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

It is easy to set up and can run as soon as you configure it out of the box. You can also add MySQL configuration in their UI. Starting and stopping the MAMP server is as simple as clicking a button.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Developing on local environments may be inconsistent -- multiple developers developing for the same website may have different configurations, which can cause headache when debugging.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Web development. This helps new developers get up and running without having to set up much configuration.

  ### 48. Best tool to quickly set up a web server on OS X

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2015

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

The ease of use. It's very simple to set up and maintain.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

Lack of good support service and rare updates.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Just go for it. The price is really worth it. With other tools you'll spend lots of time setting everything up.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The need to quickly set up the development environment for client websites.

The benefits of MAMP are the speed, simplicity and ease of use. I can have Apache, MySQL, phpMyAdmin and everything else I need set up for a new website in 5 minutes.

  ### 49. Great work companion!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Iris S. | Web Developer, Web Designer, Graphic Designer, Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2015

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

A tool like MAMP is really valuable for my business. I am a web developer and start building websites locally on my computer. I choose MAMP as local server because of its ease of use and its power. It is super easy to set up and it is powerful running my local sites. It is also a great tool for beginners to get familiar with server work in a safe local environment. There is a lot of great info on it available and there are a lot of tutorials you can read or watch to learn to work with it and use it to its full potential. Very much recommend it!

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

I don't really have anything that I do not like about MAMP.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

Very easy to set up and use.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm a web designer/ developer. I use MAMP to set up a develop environment.

  ### 50. Ideal local server software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 16, 2015

**What do you like best about MAMP?**

I'm not a power user, and I wanted a local server that would be easy to set up and maintain. MAMP is that server. The interface is clean and simple: just click "Start Servers," and it launches Apache and MySQL. The launch page includes your phpinfo settings, so you can verify that you're configured properly. The addition of phpMyAdmin is a great addition, especially for users who aren't as familiar with MySQL. From there, you can create or delete databases, add and update tables, or execute MySQL statements manually if you prefer.

**What do you dislike about MAMP?**

It's hardly a legitimate complaint, but the app is so streamlined that problems can be difficult to troubleshoot on the rare occasion that they do occur. However, this has only happened to me once (the Apache server wasn't launching), and I was able to resolve it quickly nonetheless.

**Recommendations to others considering MAMP:**

It is probably best used with MySQL. If you are using another RDBMS, you might be better off implementing a different system.

**What problems is MAMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Because of phpMyAdmin, MAMP is more than just a local server. You can use it to help administer your MySQL databases -- albeit on a relatively basic level -- which really takes this app to the next level. Having only used the free version so far, I am ready to upgrade to pro.
