Lago is the leading metering and usage-based billing API, trusted by companies like Mistral AI and Together AI to scale their revenue while streamlining their billing engine. The platform's key features include: Consumption tracking, Subscription management, Pricing iterations, Customer portal, Payment orchestration & Revenue analytics Lago is a developer first and event-based architecture solution and can be cloud or self-hosted. The best alternative to Chargebee, Recurly and Stripe Billing. For usage-based, subscription-based, and all the nuances of pricing in between.

**What do you like best about Lago?**

Lago gives us full control over our billing stack while staying developer-friendly. The fact that it’s open-source and self-hostable was a game-changer for our team, especially with GDPR constraints and growing infra complexity.

We were able to support hybrid pricing models (flat + usage) quickly, and our engineers love that they can audit every line of the system. The docs are clean, the APIs are solid, and the team is incredibly responsive on Slack.

**What do you dislike about Lago?**

There’s a slight learning curve if you’re moving from Stripe Billing or Chargebee. Lago is flexible, but it requires thoughtful integration. That said, it’s worth it if you want control.

**What problems is Lago solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed to handle dynamic billing for our AI workloads, with per-user and per-API-call logic — Stripe wasn’t cutting it. Lago lets us track usage at scale, push custom metrics, and sync everything to our finance stack without vendor lock-in.

It also allowed our growth and sales teams to iterate on pricing without involving engineering every time — huge speedup.
