**What do you like best about Illumio?**

What I like best about Illumio is the real-time visibility into application dependencies and traffic flows. The Illumination map lets me understand how workloads communicate before writing any policy, which reduces the risk of breaking production. The label-based model makes policies readable and scalable instead of relying on IP addresses, and it works consistently across a mixed environment including Windows, Linux, and IBM i. The progressive path from visibility to test mode to full enforcement makes the Zero Trust journey low-risk and manageable.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

The initial learning curve can be steep, especially when building the labeling strategy. Getting the label model right from the start is critical, and it takes time to define conventions that scale well across a large and heterogeneous environment.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Illumio solves the problem of lateral movement inside our network. In a traditional flat environment, once an attacker or a piece of malware gets in, it can spread easily between workloads. With microsegmentation, we contain that risk by allowing only the flows that are truly necessary between applications and environments. It also solved our lack of visibility: before Illumio, we didn’t have a clear picture of how workloads actually communicated, and now we can map dependencies precisely before enforcing any policy. This benefits us by reducing our attack surface, making audits and compliance easier to demonstrate, and giving us the confidence to isolate critical systems across a mixed fleet including Windows, Linux, and IBM i. Overall it strengthens our Zero Trust posture without forcing us to redesign the underlying network.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

What I like best about Illumio is its ability to provide clear visibility into workload communications and enable granular microsegmentation without relying heavily on traditional network boundaries. The label-based policy model makes it easier to manage segmentation across complex hybrid environments, while providing strong control over east-west traffic and reducing lateral movement risk.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

One area that could be improved is the workload management experience. For example, the Workloads page does not make it easy to search for or work with multiple specific workloads at the same time, which can be inconvenient when managing a large environment.

Additionally, reporting and bulk operational tasks could be more flexible, especially for larger deployments. More advanced filtering, easier bulk actions, and better customization of dashboards and reports would improve the overall day-to-day operational experience.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Illumio helps address the challenge of controlling east-west traffic and reducing lateral movement across a complex hybrid environment. It provides visibility into workload-to-workload communication and allows us to apply granular segmentation policies based on labels rather than network boundaries. This helps strengthen our Zero Trust approach, reduce exposure to risky or unnecessary traffic, and provide better control during security incidents without requiring major changes to the underlying network architecture.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

Illumio is a very well-architected platform, and it has made our onboarding process efficient and straightforward.

The approach of applying different labels to each workload, and then using those labels to understand and visualize traffic and write the right policies around it, has really sped up our deployment of micro-segmentation in our environment.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

The Rule Sets/Policies are written with the destination in mind, so it’s straightforward to create policy for apps that have Illumio VEN Agents installed and allow traffic into those apps/workloads. This is done by defining the Scope for the Rule Set.

It’s a bit trickier to write “outbound” Rule Sets when your workloads need to send network traffic to an app that doesn’t have a VEN Agent, since there isn’t a Scope for those types of destinations as some may not be consider to be "Workloads".

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Illumio is solving three problems for us. At its core, it helps protect our applications and workloads by allowing only the network traffic that is intended to and from those workloads, and nothing else. As a result, it gets us much closer to Zero Trust.

The second benefit is the visibility we gain. Being able to see the network traffic makes it easier to build application traffic maps and dependency maps for both on-prem and cloud workloads.

The third problem it’s solving is that, by understanding network traffic and analyzing risky traffic, it can suggest ways to improve our security posture by closing down ports the platform identifies as risky (for example, common ports used by ransomware).

It uses Zero Trust segmentation to limit access without needing major network changes.
You get clear visibility into application traffic across data centers and cloud environments.
Overall, it reduces the blast radius of attacks, simplifies operations, and strengthens security with minimal disruption.

Illumio can take time to fully tune, since defining the right policies requires upfront effort.
It focuses on segmentation, so it doesn’t replace other security tools like EDR or firewalls.
The value is highest in complex environments, which may limit impact for very small setups.
Teams may also need training to get comfortable with the model and workflows.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

What I like most about Illumio is the combination of strong visibility, intuitive policy management, and effective microsegmentation. The UI makes it easy to understand application and workload communication and manage security policies across environments. It integrates well with our existing security and infrastructure ecosystem and performs reliably as the environment scales. The onboarding experience and available support also make adoption easier for the team. Its intelligent insights and recommendations help us better understand our environment and make more informed security decisions. Overall, Illumio reduces complexity while strengthening our security posture.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

The main area for improvement is that some of the more advanced policy configurations can have a learning curve, particularly for new administrators. A simpler guided onboarding experience and more streamlined workflows would make the platform even easier to adopt. There is also an opportunity to expand integrations and provide additional intelligent recommendations that could further reduce manual analysis and policy administration. Despite these areas for improvement, the platform remains highly capable and delivers strong value for security teams.

Illumio helps us solve the challenges of gaining visibility across workloads, controlling lateral movement, and consistently enforcing zero-trust security policies. Its integrations help bring security controls into our existing environment, while reliable performance allows us to manage protection at scale. The platform reduces manual effort through centralized policy management and intelligent visibility into application dependencies and communication patterns. Strong onboarding and support help the team adopt the platform effectively, while the reduced operational complexity and improved risk visibility provide meaningful value and ROI. **What do you like best about Illumio?**

I find Illumio incredibly useful for implementing microsegmentation, which allows only the necessary network traffic to flow between systems, helping maintain a cleaner and more secure network environment. I like using its label-based inventory model to classify services and servers according to their roles, simplifying policy management by using labels instead of IP addresses. In case of a security incident, I can quickly isolate a server by assigning a specific label with restrictive security policies. I also appreciate how Illumio streamlines policy creation by recommending required ports and communication rules, making it easy to implement policies with just a few clicks. Its maps showing the communications help me know more about the traffic in our services and identify malicious traffic. The segmentation of environments such as DMZ, Production, QA, and Development is another benefit I value, and Illumio has been very easy to install and run.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

Nothing.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

I really like how Illumio makes managing any workload via Labels easy for us. When we have a new server, we just assign the labels, and everything is set up. This system means that when new servers are added, the correct policies get automatically applied without needing a manual lookup. Understanding Illumio wasn't a major challenge as it's quite straightforward for our team.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

Logging should really be improved. That's one part which is frustrating sometimes. I've raised support cases as well, but that didn't help. I sometimes wait for 30-40 minutes for new logs to be visible in the Illumio console. There should not be a delay of logs. If we are troubleshooting something and need Illumio logs, live logs should be available. And if not, then we should have the option to configure or send VENs logs directly to our internal SIEM or syslog server.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Illumio for microsegmentation, which reduces lateral movement risk without needing additional firewalls. Managing workloads with labels simplifies our process by allowing automatic policy application without manual lookups.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

I really appreciate Illumio’s “illumination” feature because it lets me map current traffic and understand communication patterns before I apply more restrictive policies. The different maps and dependency views make it easier to see how systems interact and give me a more complete overall picture, which is especially valuable when I’m working on network segmentation.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

Adopting Illumio hasn’t been that easy. Even after a year, we’re still learning how to enable and use some features effectively. I’d like our security analysts, network engineers, and sys admins to be able to leverage it more confidently. More guided, hands-on technical workshops that are available to customers would really help us fully adopt the product.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Illumio for network segmentation to monitor and control traffic, block lateral movement, and better understand communication patterns across my environment. The Illumination feature maps traffic flows and dependencies, giving me a clear, complete picture of what’s communicating with what before I apply policies.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

Able to ringfence server and application groups.  Can easily find traffic that is being blocked internally and why..

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

Not intuitive. Long learning curve.  Needs the ability to allow traffic but block some.  Only does deny all but allow some.

Policies sometimes don't work and the reason you get from Support doesn't make any sense, when other policies made the same way work just fine.

Support has gone downhill, now just normal.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Lets me easily segment my environments and application groups to only allow the required traffic on the required ports from the allowed workstations.  More than meets my compliance requirements.

A very intuitive interface (UI), with an integration that's very easy to handle and a very reliable performance to provide the network with greater security. The price is pretty good, and the app support is really good since it comes with intelligence that can help solve problems.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

It effectively provides microsegmentation for workload security and is easy to use. The illumination maps are available and straightforward to understand, which helps with visibility. I also like that applications can be grouped together, making organization and management simpler.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

There are no time-bound ACL rules we can use to track temporary ACL requests. VM cloning also has issues because it copies the VEN’s identity to the cloned machine. There should be a way to remediate this automatically.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Effective microsegmentation is a major plus, since security policy enforcement is no longer reliant on the network gateway and SVI ACL. Workloads can be locked down, and stricter rules can be applied to help prevent security breaches.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

I use Illumio for its core micro-segmentation functionality. I like that it provides visibility which is really useful for big enterprises. After installation, it created a map of all workloads, helping to restrict lateral movement and better identify and map our environment. I also found the initial setup very easy, with a professional team providing guidance and support at every stage.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

I believe Illumio needs to enhance their solution in container environments so they can offer enforcement with an agentless solution.

**What problems is Illumio solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I find that Illumio limits the damage of potential breaches by restricting lateral movement. We gain visibility with its core functionality, and it creates a map of our workloads, helping us identify and map our environment better.

I think Illumio is an easy-to-use product that's been helping me quite a lot with the portfolio of customers that I manage. I think it's a good tool to leverage. I find the visualization of the flows a great help in setting up rulesets. It is convenient that you can first put a workload in Selective Enforcement mode to gain insight into which flows are going to and from those workloads. The draft view on the map clearly indicates what would be blocked in Full Enforcement mode. I also find it positive that Illumio offers APIs that are easily usable, allowing us to enrich our workloads in Illumio with information from our CMDB. My org uses Illumio for intra-VLAN protection, ransomware blast radius reduction, and as a more flexible alternative to our mess of ACLs.
It's letting us reduce our ACL sprawl, which was nearing hardware limits (CAM table exhaustion).

Illumio’s policy model and VEN install are baked into our server deployment process now, which I recommend all customers do. 

I work in both networking and security, and Illumio bridges both worlds well. I touch it frequently to manage access across all sorts of servers and traffic flows, and I have no complaints about performance or UI. 
Great for network or security folks trying to shrink blast radius and ditch legacy ACL messes.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

There is definitely a learning curve, but once you wrap your head around the policy model, it clicks. 
Only gotcha I've seen is that changing a server IP often requires reinstalling the VEN.

Illumio is among the most impressive technologies I have encountered for supporting a zero trust approach. It greatly simplifies the process of implementing micro-segmentation.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

I think there is always potential for improvement. My main issue is the inability to stream logs directly to a SIEM, which I find limiting. Aside from that, I consider it to be an excellent product.

**What do you like best about Illumio?**

Illumio is a key technology in our journey to zero trust by enforcing least-privilege across our workloads. 

The dynamic laelling means we can deploy micro-segmentation quickly and at scale.

By implementing Selective Enforcement as a first phase we can achieve an initial level of segmentation quickly across our assets.

The move to a Unified console where one can have visibility and enforcement of policies across both on-premise adnd cloud assets.

By leveraging the Illumio API we have a robust integration with many internal systems for automation including our CMDB, IP Management tools, virtualization platform and directory services.

**What do you dislike about Illumio?**

High utilization of Memory on some servers by the Illumio agent.

Some issues with performance of the SaaS console although this seems to have been improved since moving to a dedicated instance. 

Some issues experienced with the visualization of logs in explorer.

Would like to see a clearer schedule on our move to the Unified console.

Illumio is a key technology in our journey to zero trust by enforcing least-privilege across our on-premise workloads including both endpoints and servers. This is a key project within the company's Cyber Security Program.
