The best software for easy and fast graph visualization and manipulation **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** JEANFED R. | Research Student, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2021 **What do you like best about Gephi?** It's really simple to use, it has a nice interface and it has a data laboratory tab that lets you manipulate data, also it has a plugins tab that adds many other tools such as "Network Splitter 3D" **What do you dislike about Gephi?** The only thing I didn't like about it is that it forces you to install Java, but if you're a regular Java user then you'll not have any other troubles with Gephi. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've been using it as a learning tool for one of my classes in data science, recommended by the professor. And I think it is one of the best tools out there for graph visualization. ### 2. It allows me different ways of presenting the network graphs easily and to focus on what I need, i.e. Eigenvector Centrality, Betweenness Centrality or any other setting I require. It allows for a HQ capture of the graphs to be used. **What do you dislike about Gephi?** Sometimes it requires more RAM to be able to render the image or it doesn't let me import certain files. Upgrading the software or adding plugins can make it glitchy. I also don't like how it takes so much time to export the image. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am able to find out who the prominent people are in a certain social media network. It makes it easy to get insights and develop an analysis based on the nodes with the most connections. It saves me the trouble of manually going through data. ### 3. It is extremely simple to use requires almost no coding to perform important tasks. The ability to calculate important variables and community models as well as instantly visualize them within seconds is unparalleled. The software is free which is a huge plus and the website has really good tutorials on how to use the software. **What do you dislike about Gephi?** I had to install Java separately to get Gephi to work correctly. My recommendation is that as Gephi is being installed, the user should be prompted to install Java first before the Gephi installation can go through. Also, some of the locations of the buttons have changed from the previous versions. **Recommendations to others considering Gephi:** My recommendation is that as Gephi is being installed, the user should be prompted to install Java first before the Gephi installation can go through. Also, it would be great if a possible Gephi library can be accessed using Jupyter Notebook as I can perform other non-visualization tasks on Jupyter Notebook and quickly carry it over to Gephi without having to write a file. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have used Gephi is identify patterns in my data. I had a data set with similar movie pairs that I was able to extract from an API then I exported the file to a csv and imported into Gephi. I was then able to calculate the modularity and find out which movie/node was the most important of all the movie options that I had scraped. ### 4. It is user friendly and the GUI is very self explanatory . It is the best tool for network analysis. It allows us to easily apply various filters on the network graph to make the graph more readable. We can calculate many statistical parameters such average degree, clustering coefficient, network diameter, modularity etc. We can then change the size and color of nodes according to the parameters for analyzing the network. It also allows us to save all graphs. **What do you dislike about Gephi?** The layout algorithms when run on large networks, can really load your processor. It also has high battery usage. The worst drawback is that you cannot undo a change done to your network in gephi. If you did an unwanted change, you have to start over again. The filter application is also a little confusing. **Recommendations to others considering Gephi:** I recommend using Gephi for visualization because of the various features it has to offer and the user friendly interface. The effective visual settings make the task of analysis much easy. It also allows you to save the graph. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** There are various purposes for analyzing the network depending on the network itself. Some purposes are to detect communities in the network, checking network robustness, identifying the giant components etc. Gephi makes the analysis very handy and simple. ### 5. Personally, I have been able to perform text analysis and simultaneously analyze data of variables at the ratio level, such as the speed of automobiles. The best thing about this software is the ability to apply filters, statistical models, analysis schemes, and still choose very interactive and pleasing visuals. **What do you dislike about Gephi?** The application module of statistical models with color filters is not very intuitive. He preferred to perform the statistical models and then edit the graphic elements of visualization by hand. To improve this aspect, use would be more fluid. **Recommendations to others considering Gephi:** It is essential in statistical knowledge and a logic principle to be able to interact with Gephi. You have many benefits in the area of application of statistical models doing analysis of nodes and networks. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** I was immersed in a qualitative research project where I had to analyze the content of numerous interviews. The contribution of Gephi was very relevant because it allowed me to provide quantitative strength to establish the nodes and the relationships of the language based on the chains of relationship. ### 6. Sometimes navigating can be a pain to find certain items. **Recommendations to others considering Gephi:** Be willing to learn the software, it's a bit hard to understand at first. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** Being able to network map. Gephi also provides some important measure results such as closeness, betweenness and eigenvector centralities, and one does not have to know programming in order to get these results, which makes the program very convenient to use. With add-ons, it is also possible to create dynamic networks publishable on the web. **What do you dislike about Gephi?** Unlike UCInet, it takes time to understand how to color-code nodes based on the characteristics you choose, or which button works for what. **Recommendations to others considering Gephi:** If you know how to use R or Python, use Gephi as a great tool for beautiful graphs, but for other analyses, turn to your programming skills. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** As a researcher, I find Gephi very useful because provides beautiful visual social network graphs which are essential for exploratory and explanatory analysis. ### 10. The UI is easy-to-use. There is a learning curve - but not too steep. **What do you dislike about Gephi?** Gephi is not great for data manipulation or analysis. It helps you do basic descriptive analysis, but for any other statistical or network analysis measures, you will need a different software. **What problems is Gephi solving and how is that benefiting you?** Social network analysis is basically incomplete with visualization. Gephi is by far the easiest visualization manipulation software. You can also use the same dataset to create multiple visualizations. The add-on packages help you put more details into to the visualizations including geographic locations and world map. ### 11.
