Fingerprint gives us a device-level identifier we can't get from IP or email alone. We run it at signup and domain verification and feed the visitor ID and risk signals into our automated blocking rules. We're a news site and we get scraped a lot. That was the whole reason we went looking – not fraud, not account takeover, just bots hammering our content around the clock. We looked at Cloudflare's bot stuff first (we already use them for CDN) but at the time it just wasn't detailed enough for what we needed. Fingerprint gives you the actual breakdown - VPN, residential proxy, VM, dev tools open, tampering - as separate signals instead of one score you have to trust blindly. For us that's the main thing. You can see what is hitting you and write rules against exactly that.

To give an idea of scale: over the last three months it flagged roughly 480K requests on VPN, 380K coming from VMs and 540K with tampering, and 148K classified outright as bad bots. In August we had a wave that pushed VPN traffic to about 2.5x the previous month, and instead of guessing what it was we could just look. At one point Meta's web indexer showed up in the browser list by name, which I didn't expect.

Price. The model makes sense on paper, but when what you're paying for is bot traffic, the better the bots get at hammering you the bigger your bill gets. Our usage went up 65% in the last month and a big chunk of that wasn't real readers. I use Fingerprint for its smart signals and the consistent device ID it provides. These features help me judge who are the genuine customers and detect those using techniques like VPNs, emulators, or geolocation spoofing. It's really helpful in identifying fraudulent activities and patterns on our platform, allowing me to make decisions on restricting or blocking certain devices. The setup was also quite easy, with just a few lines of JavaScript, and our tech team managed to integrate and test everything in almost a day or two, making the process really seamless. I also value the suspect score feature because it gives me a detailed analysis of anomalies within the fraudster data, helping me identify and focus on important fraud signals to improve our system. I would like Fingerprint to improve the consistency of the device fingerprint it provides. Right now, it gives a browser-level fingerprint, so if a customer switches browsers, like from Chrome to Firefox or Safari, the device ID changes. It would be great to have a consistent fingerprint across different browsers. Also, I've noticed that the risk rule option on their dashboard is still in beta. The accuracy of Fingerprint's claims about identifying website visitors isn't always reliable. Sometimes they report what they find as factual, even when it's not accurate, and can feel like a hallucination on their part. For instance, when testing my own bots on my site, it incorrectly identified them as 'nodriver', while I was using a patched chromium fork, which was misleading. It has helped us catch malicious actors and duplicate accounts. It is doing a lot of complex work behind the scenes, but it was simple to set up on our end with AI-assisted development.

Not clear to me how to operate separate environments (e.g. prod vs. sandbox). At least it was not on first implementation.

The price also grows very quickly with traffic and with increased boting this can be a problem in future. The UX/UI has not been easy to navigate for non-technical members.

The integration with Fingerprint was a challenge because we use Terraform while they use CloudFormation. We cannot manage two different systems to handle architecture as code, so we had to do a practically manual integration. Although generally, it doesn't need to be touched afterward, if the integration were as simple as a click with CloudFormation, but for Terraform, it would be great. In cybersecurity and fraud prevention, bad actors heavily rely on VPNs, residential proxies, and Tor to borrow the reputation of legitimate consumer connections. Traditional IP-based tracking easily falls blind to this. The documentation is clear, the SDKs are easy to work with, and the device identification feels significantly more reliable than relying only on cookies or basic analytics.
