DriveImage XML has been my go-to software for archiving an old PC. It's easy to use, has more than one means of making sure that it gets all the data, it's fast, and, for home users, there is a free version. Typically, when I setup a new PC for someone, I will use something like Windows Easy Transfer to copy user data from the old PC to the new PC. After that, I will use DriveImage XML to backup the old PC and I will give this backup to the user. When DriveImage XML creates a backup, it does it in 2 steps. If you aren't familiar with it, you will think that you are nearly done with the whole process when the first part is almost complete.
