Switching to Draftsight has allowed us to massively reduce software expense while increasing performance. The robust API allows us to use DraftSight to build an intelligent system to automatically create control box drawings and schematics without having to burden a drafter. The cost is about 10% of the legacy software it is replacing. When manual interventions are required, the UI is extremely familiar to anyone who has used standard 2D CAD platforms like AutoCAD. Even though the bulk of our design work happens in 3D, a solid 2D CAD tool is still strictly necessary for our hybrid workflow. We use DraftSight constantly for reviewing legacy DXF/DWG files, quickly detailing flat patterns, and mapping out initial 2D floor plans upstream from our 3D CAD.

The biggest advantage for me is the muscle memory. If you are coming over from AutoCAD, the UI/UX is incredibly familiar. You can sit down, start typing your old command aliases, and they just work. From a business perspective, it is a massive win. It isn’t without its quirks. You really have to get into the habit of keeping your files clean.
