Adjunct Instructor: Manage course materials, communicate with students, grade assignments, and facilitate online and blended classes. Former Online Graduate Student: Completed coursework and collaborated with peers using the platform. What I like best: Streamlined Course Management: Centralizes course content, announcements, discussions, and grades, making it easy to organize and access materials. Communication Tools: Discussion boards, group messaging, and announcements provide effective ways to keep students informed and engaged. Intelligent Agents: help automate engagement messaging to give the appearance of being "always on" and let my students know if they're missing any details. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Navigation Complexity: Some menus and settings require too many clicks, especially when switching between instructor and student views. I absolutely love the ability to use HTML embeds in the content area allowing the creation of OER content. We moved from Blackboard to Brightspace, and I cannot say enough good things about Jackie the trainer. She is a former professor and really helped our staff and faculty learn the tools. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Be careful of the wording used by D2L during the RFP process. They do not call things the same thing as you might be call them. Also, they are not forthcoming about prices for add-on products or fees. While they think this is a good tactic because it makes the RFP price lower, it shows that they do not really understand higher education funding cycles. We can't go to bat for more money in the middle of a fiscal year. We've told them this; others have told them this and they simply refuse to change their process. So, be sure to ask all the questions and about all hidden products and fees during your RFP process. The tools are all worth it, and it stumps me why they don't just include all those opportunities at the front gate. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our faculty wanted to move away from blackboard and use a more modern LMS. Allowing you to create bespoke brands and layouts for different campuses and or departments. The platfrom is also very visually appealing and intuitive to learners without being overly clutered. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The gradebook can be a little confusing to get used to and a one stop gradebook shop for learners is not available. Currently instructors either have to create a folder with all assessment links or learners have to remember whether the assessment is a quiz, an assignment, or some other 3rd party assessment tool. The interface is open and there's decent context sensible help. Good community for getting help and giving input. I work with it daily both as an instructor and developer and both naitively and with integrated Articulate content. I've worked with many LMS products, in multiple capacities, since 1990s and like Brightspace best. My roles include course developer, instructor, course management coordinator and LMS migration role as functional project manager for SFU's move from WebCT to Canvas. NOTE: the review form doesn't allow for NA or "don't know" in the feature ranking section. So my rankings for some of those categories are 80% guess. Frustrating one can't pass on the things one isn't well versed in. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Administration documentation can be hard to find. The community is helpful but searchable docs that understand synonyms or situations / goals would be welcome. Data hub progress is appreciated. Always something one wants that isn't easy to get out of existng choices. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our unit at UNBC hosts self-paced courses using rapid development software for content as well as shells for supporting academic courses using native Brightspace tools. Integration with commercial payment software is a big plus for the continuing studies courses but we can also integrate with student and employee accounts for the organization. Brightspace is flexible and quick to develop in. Decent set of tools without getting bogged down in too many complications. Steady march of new features and fixes. ### 14. They look-forward to daily log-ins and new information being posted. D2L Brightspace incorporates seamlessly with the Interactive Onine Material that students access. This updates the gradebook automatically when students complete work - so it's a WIN / WIN for students AND the Teacher! When we made the decision to adopt Brightspace for the Competency-Based Education courses we were developing, we were a little hesitant to start with a new platform. However, our review of the features of competency-based education revealed that D2L has integrated this approach to teaching and learning into its design. Any concerns we had about adopting Brightspace were erased as soon as we began working with our implementation team. The responsiveness of their support team and their engagement with us as we considered features and LTI to integrate now (and those to save for further along in our program development) made often anticipated concerns and quickly alleviated those that were not anticipated. The certificate training and the online resources make it an easy-to-use platform for our instructors and learners. Our instructors and mentors rely on the reports daily to support our learners. If an institution is considering developing a competency-based program, I fully endorse D2L Brightspace as the LMS of choice. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The only element that took a little getting used to would be questions about are you using the new option of x feature or the old option of x feature. Sometimes it is not clear to us as brand new users what is new and what is old. The D2L community pages have so many great templates and shared resources. I love the options to add tabs and accordians to pages as well as consistent page headers and footers. The checklists are another favorite feature. I have wished for all of these options when using another LMS. As a newbie, I really appreciated the Brightspace guided courses which got me pretty thoroughly acquianted with the platform quickly. There are still advanced features that I haven't mastered yet, but I am having fun learning because most of Brightspace is easy and intuitive to navigate. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The area in which I'm hoping to see some additional features added is the reporting. They listened to our concerns and our needs, and helped us choose the perfect product for our college. The LAM program has been a great asset to our college, and our LAM has helped us with implementation of several external tools throughout the years. I really like how easy it is to navigate the interface. As a previous user of other LMS, I find Brightspace's design very pretty and intuitive. I had no trouble designing my class and I could (only with the help of tutorials) set up dates, attendance lists, assignments, evaluations, and more. Also, I love the way everyone at support service keeps in touch with us, letting us know the status of our cases. They, very kindly, make sure the problem is solved. By the way, I find the ASC Support Portal very easy to use to create a case and keep track of the process too. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Something that can improve about Brightspace, I think, is the integration of certain encrypted content (forms, videos, or presentations) from other pages, which —sometimes— are not compatible. With Brightspace, we're able to integrate Kaltura for videos and H5P with its vast array of interactive components. D2L has a wonderful support community, an annual conference, in-depth documentation, and a well-organized feature request system. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** After migrating from a custom-built LMS in which we had direct control of our upgrades, we aren't able to prioritize our institutions needs over D2L's broad customer base. In addition, some of the embedded tools and functionalities have a steep learning curve as they can be rather complex and difficult to master. This has caused frustration for some instructors leading some to not use Brightspace tools to their full potential. An ongoing issue for me has been the difficulty and time required to grade discussion forum posts when students post anonymously. These posts need to be graded manually, which can be overwhelming when teaching a large class, for example. Although I believe the option to post anonymously is important, not just for accessbility reasons but also to encourage students to communicate openly and honnestly, especially when the topic is personal or controversial. A last challenge with Brightspace for me is with the integrated grading tool. It can be clunky and difficult to use and issues often arise. For example, it is difficult and frustrating to annotate/comment/grade using the handwriting (or drawing) tool. Extra lines are often added and the annotations are not always saved. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Problem 1: simplifying and streamlining learning and assessment activities. Being able to integrate numerous third-party apps not only can simplify the instructor's job, but can also enhance collaboration in the classroom (or online). It encourages innovative teaching methods and makes the learner's learning experience richer. For institutions that offer courses and programs in more than one language or who cater to students from diverse cultural backgrounds, the ability for each user to choose their preferred interface language helps ensure it is accessible and inclusive for all. In addition, tools like the home page, customizable widgets, checklists, and announcements help to streamline and improve communication with learners by helping guide them through course requirements, deadlines, and activities. One of my favourite benefits is the free, accessible, and easy to use templates offered by D2L for Brightspace. These templates help encourage consistency within and across courses. This can enhance the learner experience by reducing confusion and cognitive load and thus improving engagement and supporting learners to be successful. ### 42. One of the advantages of the platform is its customization, which has allowed our Campus to have a visual appearance in line with the center's corporate image. On the other hand, the teacher has a wide range of possibilities when creating grading elements for students (rubrics, quizzes...). Additionally, thanks to the communication channels, constant communication can be established between teacher and student, which is ideal for our online modality students. All of this makes learning flexible and personalized. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** When needing/requesting a function within the platform itself, we must wait for the other organizations to also request it so that it can be evaluated and/or applied. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** It helps us to have a space that allows for a system of evaluation and communication with the students both in-person and online. ### 45. The main advantages are that it has an Intuitive Interface and is quite customizable, offering a modern and user-friendly interface that facilitates navigation for both students and teachers. Brightspace allows the configuration of various types of assessments, such as quizzes, assignments, discussions, and rubric-based evaluations. Teachers have control over the customization of evaluation criteria and grading methods, which is ideal for adapting to different methodologies. You have access to all the data to be able to make reports. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** When generating reports in the data center, you cannot apply some filters without needing to extract all the data, for example, by user, by OU, etc., it only allows filtering by date. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** The attendance roll call tool, not very interactive, we already submitted a suggestion more than a year ago, without any news. ### 46. The layout is easy to read and simple to navigate. Our students and faculty easily transitioned from our old LMS to Brightspace, and have been very happy with the change! Our implementation team was so helpful, and worked through the transition with us to make is seemless. Customer support has been great when faculty or admins had questions. The array of tools and features make this LMS fun for our faculty to use, and they are enjoying adding new features to their courses each semester! Being so used to Google’s structure, there’s a significant discomfort when working on the course creation setup. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** The two major problems I was able to solve with D2L were the unification of multiple higher education institutions (HEIs) into a single environment, each with its own customized visual identity, and the improvement of student tracking, something I couldn't achieve with Canvas. ### 48. The LMS is intuitive and easy for beginners through advanced users. The embedded HTML templates, accessibiilty guides, and helpful tips from the Community also promote student learning and faculty convidence. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** While an odd statement because how could it be a negative? The level of customizability of the platform can be overwhelming for a new users, but this can be easily mitigated by the administrators on campuses in the simple to use toggle system to turn features on and off. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** The platform allows continued enhancement to meet the growing educational and technical needs of an ever changing and diverse student population. ### 49.
