D2L staff are responsive and so very helpful - we enjoy working with them! Our students and their families find the LMS very easy to use, and they praise the tools that they access when working in the LMS. Our staff finds the tools very helpful in every aspect of their work - developing courses and content, assessing student work, compiling engagement data, and communicating with students experiencing challenges. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Given my experiences with other LMSs, there is nothing that I have to compaing about with D2L. We have been very happy with the service and with the features of the LMS. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are reaching students from K - 12, and we are managing to use the tremendous tools in Brightspace to created universally accessible courses for our students. We can access data from the LMS to inform decisions about course materials and content and to determine levels of student engagement, and that also helps us make decisions about future course development needs and directions. ### 2. Ease of use to post announcements, course materials, assignments and by setting up modules with dates or restrictions there is a lot of control over what the student sees and when. The tool that seems most beneficial is the Dropbox because it keeps a nice record of all uploads and is easy to use for any type of assignment - written document or media document. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The lack of statistics for instructors as an entire class. Class progress stats need to include much more details surrounding the Content being opened and reviewed by students - date/time they clicked on document, did they print or stay online to review it. The next item that is due in sequence for the course (discussion/dropbox/quiz) should be next on the chart and show the date/time the student clicked on it and when it was completed it should automatically pop in a green light and all the items due for the course should be listed in the order they were assigned by date to be due. Far more stats on what/where the student is exactly in the course module path of things. Much of these stats are there now, but scattered around the interface and not summarised nicely in one location. Some of the stats are not there and it makes it difficult. Instructors need to feel a stronger presence from the student in the system and just knowing they attended today and when the last attempt occurred, isn't a real picture of what the student did for hours, especially if they didn't turn in the assignment and they claimed they were trying to upload but it wouldn't work or that they reviewed the material and they were confused, so nothing is showing as actually even being reviewed (their word against no stats)...just saying that this is a common need. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** Compare costs and consider the essential CORE needs **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Ability for students to access any time of day or night to see materials. Ability for students to upload assignments and a system that doesn't confuse what the student uploaded into a big pile in the backend (like MS). It's organized so nicely by assignment folders and students work and it's not hard to locate to grade. Nothing falls into a misc folder somewhere in lala land with spinning and no access to the product. The product is reliable and it has been working well for many years. It continues to be developed regularly. It's not in "beta" continuously and the CORE product works always. The whole system is barely down ever. D2L support staff have lots of patience and very polite staff. It's been reliable, accessible -- stable even through the worst of covid. Only the users own ISP has been a problem and it's not all the users, just those who have terrrible bandwidth. However, I have found even with the worst bandwidth that a file will upload, if you try again. A media file will take forever, but a regular Word document will go up very quickly. Hopefully, the ISP provisions for students will make it a level playing field in the future (rural vs. urban areas) and we all will have faster upload speeds and less issues for them. At least the product is accessible and there is support for users having those issues, if they would just call (since there is 24/7 support by voice; unlike other vendors who just have message submissions) instead of complain that they can't get it to work. ### 3. Once you log in, you know exactly what to choose. Besides, you have 2 ways to select your class. Also, the content of each class is easily visible and organized by chapters. I love the feature of hiding the material and making it visible when I want. Another feature that I used a lot was the calendar on the home page. Whenever I needed to plan something, it was accessible and easy to look ahead. I like the feature about entering grades. It is easy to apply and save. It does not time out and the columns are easy to create. It gives enough time to enter and check for mistakes before saving the information. Being able to customize the classes makes it feel personalized. This is great not only for the teacher, but for the student as well. You can add photos which students love to see. Being able to personalize the material is a big plus. Brightspace also give opportunity to those students who have been absent from school to keep informed and in education. They can log in anywhere and complete the assigned material. Not only has this been important during the pandemic but also coming back to school. Many students had to stay home due to being close contacts to a covid patient, but they were able to keep informed and finish their school year successfully. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** You have to upload the material per block instead of having to do it once, and just applying it to all the desired classes. This system is time-consuming and unnecessary. I would love to see a feature where you can schedule when the material is visible, but able to upload just once. Another suggestion would be with the feedback. I have the experience as a teacher and as a mother, and it seems that I have to be looking for feedback instead of getting a notification. My students rarely saw the feedback I provided. They had to be reminded in class to log in and look for it. This makes the feedback loose it's purpose becuase you want the student to receive it immediately. Something else I would improve is the submission area. Most students upload various attachments to one assignment, and you can't skip from one attachment to the next. You need to go back to submissions and click on another tab. This makes it more time consuming as well. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Personally I have not solved any problems with D2L. We have some representatives in school that are aware of all the issues that can arise and we rely on them. So far the issues mentioned above don't have a quick fix but it would be something brightspace could work on. Having this communication from D2L does give us benefits because you have someone to contact. ### 13. In fact, my organization has built its internal campus portal on Brightspace's homepage. This product allows us to make our campus portal and learning management system not only accessible but also robust. In addition, Brightspace offers my organization a single location and "home" to all college communications. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Accordions and tabs can be tricky in the HTML editor. Another issue I have seen is the Google sign-in error, where users cannot access embedded Google files; they are sent in an infinite sign-in loop, where they are asked to "Sign in" and do in a new window. As soon as the credentials are taken, they are kicked back to the "Sign in" page. This issue stems from creating a link in a module instead of uploading or linking a Google Drive file from one's own Drive. However, one cannot upload a Google Drive file if the file lives in a Shared Drive. I would like to see Shared Drive capabilities. Other than that, I have no complaints. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** I highly recommend this product. It is accessible and robust. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** One problem my organization solved by using Brightspace is replacing our campus portal with D2L's product. We are currently in the middle of this project and are creating new content pages for the various departments on campus. This internal college platform and learning management system has not only saved our college money but also provides a single location for all campus-needed communications (academic and internal communications). ### 15. I also like the fact that when students were submitting late, they would show us the number of hours or even days that they had submitted late. Not very friendly because it was extremely hard to transfer information from one block to the other. Subsequently, a LMS is always prone to be confusing and convoluted. However, D2L Brightspace, seems to have been built with the user in mind. The platform provides the user with a streamlined version that allows both instructors and students to easily browse it without having to deal with the nuts and bolts. The emphasis put on the visual communication, makes it easier to quickly locate the most important functions as well as the categories. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The only thing I have found to be a bit clumsy is the emailing function. The icon located on the top part makes it more accessible, but the selection of addressees is not as intuitive as it is in any other platform. This is for the specific case of countries in LATAM. Loading videos from Zoom takes a while. This is frustrating. However, I´m confident with the integration of Panopto, this will not be a problem anymore. I don´t like that I cannot have a student for doing trials. It is really different to view as a student than to try everything as a student. You cannot submit files and see if all is working properly in the view as a student feature. Additionally, the mail app is not friendly enough. It took me a while to learn how to send emails which was the only non intuitive part of the LMS. One thing I dislike is the view of quizzes. There´s a lot of room to improve there. Also, pdfs and ppts loaded in the content section should have the possibility to load in a different window to be able to see them bigger. Fonts should also include the font use as default. I have found a way of pasting my question in questionaries by downloading the font from internet (google fonts), but it is frustrating that you paste your questions and you cannot get your questionaire to look consistent in some questions due to this. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have been trying multiple functionalities and trying to give feedback to my IT department. After a year of trying it i can say now that I am an expert in the LMS but it took me while to get familiar with all functionalities. In terms of benefits, great customer service. Easy to get solutions from youtube from other users. Lots of universities using the LMS and lots of info on how to get things done from the web. ### 43. With COVID distance learning, it has been helpful to upload material, links and do my evaluations (exams and quizzes) online. I like that I can organize my modules and check on class progress, also that I can send an e-mail to students that are missing assignments or if there is an announcement that I need to make. I like that I can grade papers using rubrics and writing comments on the document itself. I can download the paper WITH the comments and markups (as I have to turn in all evidence to university administrators. There are features that my university does not have (but I understand Brighspace has available). **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Our university uses Brighstspace in Spanish. Some of the translations make features not evident (I expect you have chosen to use neutral Spanish to avoid regional differences, but then we need to figure out what the features are, when it is not a common word. I want to download graded rubrics (as I mentioned before, my university requires us to turn in "evidence" if a student wants a grade reviewed). I would also like to have rubrics available for essay questions on exams to make grading more straightforward and not figure out partial points by hand. I like that turn-it-in is incorporated into the system; however, half the time, it says it could not analyze the document saying that it will do it once the due date has passed (even though the due date has passed). So it might be a case of making sure Turn it in is fully activated in the system. It's probably that I don't know how to fix this, but my students panic because they see grades missing in "assignments" that I haven't given them, like debates, blog etc. They must be automatic in the system, but I don't know how to get rid of things in the gradebook that they don't need. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can have assignments, reading material, and additional learning material (ie videos and activities) all in one place. My students can follow up on their grades on the syllabus and can see in their student progress report if they are missing things. It makes distance learning more manageable. However, I plan to continue using Brightspace even after we return to regular classes. Brighspace helps me to keep organized; as long as all papers and exams are on the platform, I don't have to worry about them. ### 44. Being able to create the test using the test utility and the question library is awesome. I like how I also have access to my older courses so I can compare with the new ones. The interface is clean and easy to navigate. It's a web-based application, to I can access my courses from where ever I am working. It is also easy to access from a mobile device or tablet, so I can always access my courses from my office or home. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** I would probably like more fluidity between screens/menus. A video-conferencing utility could be really usefull, this would avoid the need of a third party software. I definetly need more options for creating STEM tests: for example, having different formulas in the numerical questions, not only one, as it is now. It not something I dislike, but definely something to improve. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** I recommend the option that allows teachers to copy courses and its contents from one semester to another, this is really helpful when planning a new course. This can include all course structure, presentation, test aming other elements. It is also useful to follow student performance and have information about how often the login into the course contents, this helps to keep track of students' learing process. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Teaching and learning management of my STEM courses. In particular, I define my course structure (grading system, presentations, shared documents, creation of differents activities for students) and I can manage all this activites with D2L during the semester. ### 45. I am also delighted that all the updates of the different modules always reach me in the mail, so I am aware of everything that happens and what the teachers ask me. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The bright spaces tools are very well, so I add one thing. I think the color palette is adequate, but it could use an option for a dark theme since, in our case, we use bright space all day. It tends to tire our eyes. That is a problem that many pages and platforms have already solved with the solution I propose, so I think it would not hurt to apply it to bright space. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** Do not hesitate for a moment. It is so handy and practical. Learn all about the tools that it has for you and start using bright space. Bright space has a gorgeous design, and it's so helpful for the user, the system on evaluations, and sending files. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bright space is the most critical tool that we use for virtual college education. Cause the facility that offers to students (we send all our activities, exams), professors (they send presentations, feedbacks, and recordings of classes), and to the administrative part (although I'm not sure how they handle it). On the other hand, it allows excellent handling of different courses simultaneously, unlike other systems where all the information is disorganized and getting to it is highly complicated. ### 46. And, in the case of using arithmetic question exams with the use of variables to avoid plagiarism between students, it greatly facilitates the evaluation for teachers. Brightspace offers an enormous facility to load multiple contents and organize it efficiently, in such a way that the student can access multimedia learning material that allows him to follow the topics of the curriculum. It is so efficient in this regard that we are evaluating, as an institution, offering a permanent modality of education completely online for primary and secondary schools. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** If there is something wrong, it would be the few possibilities of customization of the virtual campus. From the sales and support aspect, it was a bit disappointing that the local (third party) vendor in Ecuador had so little knowledge of the product, promising a wide variety of service features and implementation times that were ultimately not fully met. He also offered to manage the platform to reduce the workload of the institution's technology department, but in the end we had to take care of everything. Although this is not a deficiency of the product itself, it affects the service in general. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** The software is of excellent quality. I would recommend contacting D2L staff directly (especially in the case of Ecuador) and having them demonstrate Brightspace for you. It will allow them to know the system in detail. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** It helped us a lot in the change from Face-to-Face Education to Homeschooling due to the pandemic. It made it possible to establish a consultation space that complements the online classes and gives us the possibility of evaluating students effectively. In addition, the platform allows the parents of the students to know the contents that are developed in the classes with their children, see their performance and the grades they obtain for their work. ### 47. It is very easy to use It has many more options than the previous platform we were using The range of external tools that can be incorporated is amazing, and the list keeps growing. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** In my institution, it is still being deployed, so we are still missing some functionality and connectivity with external tools and resources. I was one of the early adopters of Brightspace at my University about ten months ago, and it should be fully operational for our next term. What I do not like is that it has taken more time than I expected to be fully operational. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** It has simplified the way to organize and manage my courses. The learning curve has been relatively easy. My students prefer it over the previous platform. It is easier to connect to external tools. For example, being able to embed YouTube or Flicker resources directly into Brightspace has been a huge change when compared with our previous platform where the only way to embed the external resources we wanted was through HTML code. ### 48. Perhaps they could also advertise the page more, as I had not heard of it except through the university. I like the originality they have, so I don't think that's what needs to be changed, it just seems to me that the platform is not recognized at all, at least in Latin America. They could also send emails in the user's or company's language to have more closeness with the customer. Yes, indeed, I think more closeness with the customer is needed without being intrusive, of course (I also don't think they are, and that is appreciated). They could also ask for feedback more often, to keep improving, this is the first time I see them doing it. Everything else is perfect, at least for a student like me who just wants studying to be made easier. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use it because the university uses it. Even so, it seems better to me than the one the university already had. Now I can have all my courses in one place. Since it connects easily to platforms like Zoom or other video services, finding my links is much easier. Both how to create it and how to understand how the settings work. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** The platform is very complete, and the important thing is to take advantage of all the tools it offers in the best way. If you learn how to use each tool correctly, it will be effortless to use them. You can always learn how to use the platform's tools to solve the problems that arise, and there are constant updates to improve the platform. The activities open the door to being able to ask students for deliverables and to be able to grade them in a very comfortable way. It also allows you to give them feedback, both in text and in audio and video. You can even indicate in the student's document the corrections you want to give them. The exams and the question library give you many types of question items. I recommend that you try out every kind of item, as you can create a very complete evaluation if you use them correctly. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Online classes. It helps us to be able to upload content and for students to submit assignments and evaluations.
