I recently finished the FMVA® certification from CFI, which is a thorough self-paced program. It covers a wide range of topics covering financial modeling, valuation, budgeting & forecasting, sensitivity and scenario analysis, dashboards, data visualization and other finance courses. The curriculum is well-structured, with prerequisite courses clearly identified to support progressive learning. Instructional materials—including videos, readings, exercises, and case studies—are thoughtfully designed and effectively delivered by knowledgeable instructors. I enrolled in CFI’s FMVA program believing it was a one-time payment for lifetime access, as is common for many certification courses. At no point during the purchase process was it made clear that the payment was part of an annual subscription model. The only mention was a small line buried at checkout stating “each year,” which is easy to miss and does not match the upfront impression given on the program’s main pages.

After my initial term ended, I lost access to all study materials unless I paid another full year’s subscription fee. When I contacted support, they confirmed there are no exceptions to their policy, even though the course marketing suggests learners can complete it “at their own pace.”

While the learning content itself was solid, the lack of transparency and unwillingness to offer a reasonable resolution left me feeling misled. For anyone considering this program, be aware that the cost is recurring annually, not a one-time purchase, and you will lose access to your progress if you don’t renew.

I truly valued the practical approach of the CFI courses, especially the opportunity to work through the models in Excel step by step. On the theoretical side, the courses offer solid support materials, which are further clarified through video tutorials. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

CFI structure of the FMVA program shows content in a progressive manner. You would not feel lost when content becomes challenging. You will always be able to retrieve and review the material, as all lessons are broken into different sections.

Instructors always lead you from one section to the next, explaining why this is and the importance of following a methodology.

Achieving the FMVA certification will leave you with the desire to keep expanding and exploring this never ending discipline. Moreover, using Excel as a tool will increase your understanding on why scenarios and sensitive analysis goes hand by hand when performing the valuation of a targeted company.

The 3-statement modeling will be covered extensively. Designing dashboards and presentation skills will be developed into you, bringing your level of confidence ready to propel you into a successful financial career.

What I love most about CFI is how practical and hands-on the courses are. The financial modeling training, Excel templates, and real-world case studies gave me the confidence to apply these skills at work.
