"Effortless Document Automation with Full Design Control"
5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

What I like best about Carbone is how easy it makes document automation while still giving me control over the design. I can use familiar tools like Word, Excel, or other editors to create templates and then populate them with dynamic data. I also like that it supports multiple output formats and keeps the generated documents consistent and professional. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

The main thing I dislike is that the learning curve can be a little steep when working with advanced templates. The documentation could also be more comprehensive, especially when troubleshooting complex template logic. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Guillaume Paquereau of Carbone

Thank you, Abderrahmane! We're glad Carbone lets you design templates in the tools you already use while keeping every generated document consistent.

You're right that advanced templates take some learning. To help, try the Carbone Skill, which teaches your AI assistant the full template syntax. Then use our MCP server to render and test your templates directly from the conversation. And if you get stuck, our support team is happy to help.

"Streamlined Document Automation with Minor Hiccups"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

I like Carbone's simplicity and clean interface, which doesn't overwhelm with unnecessary elements. As a developer-focused tool, it's especially nice. Carbone focuses on document automation, which is a big plus. Its flexibility for developer workflows stands out; connecting document generation with other tools and applications makes it much more useful than a simple PDF generator. I appreciate being able to see the data template and generated result together while testing, which makes understanding what's happening easier and helps quickly spot changes. The simplicity of the initial setup allowed me to start experimenting quickly, and the workflow for template and document generation is straightforward once you understand how the data templates and generated documents work together. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

Some parts of the interface could feel more polished. I like simplicity, but a few animations and transitions feel a bit basic, and the overall visual design can become monotonous after a while. I also found parts of the workflow slightly confusing at first, especially understanding why I was working with JSON and how it connected to the document generation process. A more intuitive onboarding experience and a little more attention to visual polish would make the product feel much better without sacrificing its simplicity. "Fast, Smooth Document Generation with Carbone Templates in Word or LibreOffice"
5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

Carbone makes document generation simpler by letting you design templates directly in familiar tools like LibreOffice or MS Word and then populate them with plain JSON data. It avoids the complexity of HTML-to-PDF converters, delivers very fast rendering, and handles file conversions smoothly from start to finish. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

The learning curve for the custom XML/JSON syntax can feel a bit steep at first, especially when you’re dealing with complex conditional loops or more advanced formatting. Also, if you choose to self-host the open-source version, you’ll need to maintain your own Node.js server environment and keep the LibreOffice dependencies in place for PDF rendering. "Easy Dynamic Document Generation with Reusable Templates"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

I like how easy it is to generate dynamic documents from templates. The backend integration is straightforward and helps clearly separate business logic from document design. I also value the ability to reuse templates for different types of reports, receipts, and personalized documents, which reduces repetitive code and development time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

Overall, the experience is good, but I think the documentation could be improved, especially for more advanced use cases. It would be helpful to have more practical examples, step-by-step videos, and clearer error messages when a template does not process as expected. That would make troubleshooting easier and reduce the learning curve. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Guillaume Paquereau of Carbone

Thank you for this detailed review! We're glad Carbone helps you keep business logic separate from document design, and that reusing templates saves you development time across your reports, receipts and contracts.

Your feedback on the documentation is fair, and we take it seriously. To make advanced use cases and troubleshooting easier, we now offer two AI tools:

The Carbone Skill teaches your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor…) the full Carbone syntax: tags, loops, conditions and formatters. It can then write, explain and fix your templates.

The Carbone MCP server connects your assistant directly to Carbone, so it can upload a template, render it with your JSON data and check the result right away.

Together, you can describe what you want, let the AI build the template and test the output in the same conversation.

We're also still adding practical examples to the docs. If you get stuck on a specific template, our support team is happy to help.

Thanks again for using Carbone!

"Generate Documents from Word Templates via API – Fast, Flexible, and Workflow-Compatible"
4/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

I particularly like the approach with regular Word or Office templates. You don't have to completely rebuild the layout in some proprietary editor, but can take an existing template and insert the dynamic content via tags or JSON data. Especially with PDFs or DOCX files, I find this much more pleasant than having to programmatically generate the entire document.

I also found it positive that Carbone is quite suitable for automated workflows. Structured data can be passed via the API and then directly output as a finished document. If you already work with APIs or, for example, n8n, the concept is easy to understand.

Once the template works, the actual generation process is pleasantly unspectacular: data in, document out. At the same time, you can map conditions, repeating elements, and nested data structures, making the system interesting for more complex reports. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

With simple templates, you get into it relatively quickly. However, once you want to implement more complex conditions, nested data, or more specific formatting, you have to engage much more intensively with the Carbone syntax. At this point, I think the documentation could contain more concrete examples and typical use cases. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Guillaume Paquereau of Carbone

Thank you Alexander. You've described the design intent exactly: keep the template in Word, keep the layout where it was built, and let the API handle the boring part.

Your point about the advanced syntax is fair, and it's the feedback we hear most often. The entry curve is gentle; the advanced one isn't. Nested data, conditions and edge-case formatting deserve more worked examples than we currently publish, and that's where our documentation effort is going.

One thing that may help right now: we publish carbone.skill, a knowledge file that teaches AI assistants (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Copilot) the Carbone syntax: nested tags, loops, conditional display, formatter chaining. It turns exactly the cases you ran into into something your assistant gets right the first time instead of guessing. Details here: carbone.io/documentation/developer/ai/skills.html

Thanks again for taking the time to write this up in that level of detail — it's the kind of feedback that actually changes what we ship next.

"Efficient Document Creation, Seamless Integration"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

I appreciate that Carbone makes document creation easy and integrates seamlessly with other systems. It also supports JavaScript and JSON, which helped me work efficiently. I particularly liked the ability to conduct tests after configuration at no additional cost, which allowed me to fully evaluate the software before making a purchase decision. The free trial offered me the opportunity to test the software in a real environment and ensure it met my requirements and provided the desired functionality. It was also advantageous that Carbone, as a web-based application, works well across multiple supported browsers, and I could set up the software and conduct all my tests directly from the browser without needing a complex installation. This made the testing process simple and convenient, and once the setup was complete, the software ran smoothly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

No major issues occurred during use. Overall, my experience was very positive, and I would gladly recommend the software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Versatile and User-Friendly Report Generation Tool"
5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

I appreciate Carbone's flexibility in generating reports, especially with our AI agent, which our clients find valuable. It supports a wide range of input template formats, including text formats like HTML and markdown, which are crucial for our AI-driven template generation. It's pretty straightforward to use, which is great. I particularly like the wide range of input and output formats and the smart markdown template language. The support is almost instant and really nice during development. Additionally, the pricing model is nice and well-designed. Setting up Carbone was also pretty easy, with helpful support and nicely written documentation, and we integrated it without any issues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

I do not have any majors here, documentation is nice but outdated in some places and lacks examples with some edge cases, but as I said this is minor. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Carbone Simplifies Complex Logs with Dynamic Warping"
4/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

What I like most about Carbone is that it fixes and dynamically builds warping complex logs, and it simplifies the row structure. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

It doesn’t provide a brief error description during debugging or error detection, which makes it harder to understand what went wrong. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Guillaume Paquereau of Carbone

Thank you Mahmudul, this is really valuable feedback.

You're right about the error reporting; clearer, more explicit error messages are something we're actively working on to make debugging much easier. In the meantime, our support team is available directly through the chat and will help you pinpoint any issue quickly.

Great to hear that your team can now update templates and deploy in minutes. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!

"Customizable and Flexible PDFs, Responsive Team"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Carbone?

I use Carbone for generating customized PDFs and it works well. What I like the most is the team behind it, who always help despite not being many; they are responsive and kind. I also appreciate the PDFs and the flexibility, it allows me to generate customized checklist reports for our clients, with a specific format for each client. It works the way I want. I use it with an API and our MaintenanceCoach application. On the OpenShift installation side, we struggled a bit, but the team is responsive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Carbone?

{"I find that 'today's PDF generators do not allow for the production of a PDF encoded by a client', so that the report is personalized to what the client wants — a Thales format for Thales, a different format for EDF for example.","Nothing, everything is fine; it's a bit complex to make the DOCX but that's normal.","On the OpenShift side, we struggled a bit with the initial installation."} Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
