Black Owl has simplified every aspect of our lease accounting. We are a PE firm with 14 operating companies across multiple industries, and we previously relied on large, manual Excel workbooks to track hundreds of leases. Now, the ability to easily add new companies, set up users, and add or modify leases, along with the push-button reporting capabilities, saves us significant time each month and quarter. We historically had errors and inconsistencies in our lease data which has been fully eliminated now that we're automated with Black Owl. We have hundreds of leases and subleases across 14 companies which was very difficult to manage, time consuming to account and report on and prone to errors. It’s very user-friendly and easy to navigate. Once we integrated over to Black Owl, it was very easy to learn how to navigate the system and teach other users how to use the system. Black Owl includes a journal entry integration that sends our monthly lease journal entries straight into the GL system, which has made our process much more efficient. They also offer a variety of management reports (roll forward, reconciliation, etc.) that are simple to use and helpful for tying our balances back to our Financial Reporting Tool. In addition, the Black Owl team is always willing to jump in when questions or problems come up, and they’re consistently knowledgeable and supportive. There are times when I need to add 100+ leases to the system, and Black Owl’s uploader template file has made that process much easier and more efficient. When there are lease terminations or modifications, Black Owl also helps by calculating the adjustment entries and generating the updated payment schedules. It automatically pulls in the IBR rate based on the lease term and related details. Black Owl has saved me hours each month through the journal entry integration that sends our monthly entries straight to the GL system. In the past, I was spending hours manually creating a file with 2,000+ lines, and this automation has also helped prevent manual human errors. The automation features are a major plus, taking care of calculations, amortization schedules, and journal entries with impressive accuracy. Reporting is another strong point. I really like Black Owl Lease Accounting Solution because the user interface is very user-friendly and attractive. The design is well thought out and the reporting package is sophisticated, which supports monthly reporting, internal management, and disclosure reporting. The ability to customize the solution to meet my company's specific business requirements is a huge plus. What do you dislike about Black Owl Lease Accounting Solution? I think foreign exchange is always kind of an ongoing improvement area. It's just naturally complex and very, very nuanced. They're taking steps in terms of scaling their size, which kind of has its own challenges. As they do scale and grow, their level of support and enhancement will, I think, be greatly increased in terms of turnaround. There are a few workarounds that I use in Excel right now that I would rather not have. That goes to just Black Owl's capability of turning around enhancements at a quicker pace, which I think comes with scaling. The initial setup was easy from a data conversion standpoint, but the challenges were around some of the sophisticated configurations and some integrations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. In a prior role as a Big Four audit and advisory partner, I worked with multiple clients on lease accounting under ASC 842 and IFRS 16 and have seen first-hand what works well in ongoing operations. Black Owl is one of the most complete lease accounting platforms I have seen in practice. It is built for ongoing operations, not just initial adoption. It handles day-to-day lease lifecycle work well, including modifications, reassessments, terminations, renewals, and non-standard payment patterns. It also supports complex requirements like multi-entity and multi-currency reporting, foreign exchange impacts, and both lessee and lessor accounting in a single platform. I appreciate that Black Owl Lease Accounting Solution provides all the calculations and schedules for all leases, making monthly adjusting journal entries quick and easy. I love having every bit of information for each lease in one spot for easy access at any time, which is crucial for year-end reporting and disclosures on the Reviewed Financial Statements. I enjoy the ability to generate journal entries for one specific lease or for all leases, and I can import these entries directly into the proprietary software my client uses. The software is dynamic enough to create the file type needed for export/import if it doesn't already exist.
