We also need to merge different types like rtf, doc, jpg, txt, xml, html into a single file format. Before we got to know this product we had certain limitations on merging it into a single document. We have built a custom CRM application for a client which generates personalized PDF with production information for sales agents. The images used within the PDFs are heavy and the files have several pages at times. With Aspose PDF we can simply compress the PDF files fast and efficiently. We currently use their Java solution and it was very easy to develop following their online documentation. At first, we needed an out-of-the-box SDK to convert MSWord files and Emails into PDF files. We add headers, metadata information, footers, highlights, and watermark to the converted files. A significant value Aspose.Total contributes to our solution is the powerful conversion ability from different file types to PDF format. The powerful PDF generation features allow us to create authentic versions of the documents for our customers. Aspose.Total provides a comprehensive suite of APIs that support huge file formats, including Microsoft Office files, PDFs, HTML, images, emails, and more. It has saved us significant time and effort, as we do not need to search for and integrate multiple third-party libraries to work with different file formats. The basic license does only include free support which responds quickly to technical questions but takes a long time to implement feature requests. **What problems is Aspose.Total solving and how is that benefiting you?** Apose.Words for .NET allowed us to quickly develop a custom PDF report for our embedded measurement device. Apose.Words has 3 different interfaces to create Word documents which are then converted to PDFs: LINQ Reporting Engine, Word Mail Merge, and the Document Builder. The conversion works like Word’s Print to PDF option and works very consistently. The integration was very convenient using the NuGet Package manager which is already integrated into Visual Studio and the library is updated very frequently. There is no need for any additional software. With the available documentation and examples for all three interfaces, it was very easy to get started. We opted to use the LINQ Reporting Engine which allowed us to design the report template with Microsoft Word including custom font family, headings, colors, and page numbers, and allows us to create tables with a dynamic number of rows. The LINQ Reporting Engine works with a custom syntax resembling a somewhat similar appearance as HTML (Picture 1). We made use of the foreach-syntax which allows us to iterate through lists and insert dictionaries of strings. It is also possible to redefine nested variables (e.g., sample.Header = h) so that the template stays simple. The data is fed to the Apose Library using an object with defined properties which then replaces the pre-defined template placeholders. The spacing is somewhat tricky, where the foreach-opening tags must be placed cautiously to prevent empty lines. The PDF output file (Picture 2) resembles the exact same layout and allows text to be selected. The Dictionaries are inserted with key and value pairs separated by a tab. In this example, only the table’s first four rows are filled with values. Our decision to go with Apose.Words was reinforced by the Aspose.Words Document Builder which is available with the same license. The Document Builder should allow us in the future to build PDF reports fully dynamically using only code. The Document Builder also seems to be well-rounded since it supports all necessary word properties. This would significantly simplify changing page size (A4 to letter), and company logo, having tables with a dynamic number of columns, and dynamically hiding certain areas from the report completely according to our customer’s needs. ### 9. We love the advanced document merging features in Aspose.Words, especially the nested data tables. We also love the custom font handling in Aspose.Words, and the powerful PDF generation features which allow us to create beautiful documents for our customers. We were blown away by how well Aspose.Words mimics Microsoft Work functionality, such as merge field formatting, IF statements and more – it’s really impressive. Aspose.Cells makes it easy for us to read & write Excel and CSV files for our data import/export operations. We liked how easy it was to access worksheets in an Excel file via the Aspose API. Aspose.Cells also made it easy for us to transform data from our application into an Excel file for data export. **What do you dislike about Aspose.Total?** The components have been around for a long time, and as such they are loaded with features. It was a bit of a daunting learning curve and knowing how to implement features. Also, there is often more than one way of implementing a feature, particularly with Aspose.Words, so we really had to dig through the documentation and forums to ensure we were doing things the best / recommended way. When building complex document templates in as MS Word documents, it can be easy to create invalid merge fields and invalid table regions. But this is less of a fault of Aspose, and more of a general MS Word issue. **Recommendations to others considering Aspose.Total:** If you need server-side manipulation or creation of documents based on the MS Office format, then Aspose is your best choice. Its features are comprehensive but can also be daunting at first and may require a more experienced developer to implement. **What problems is Aspose.Total solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed to generate PDF documents merged with data from our application dynamically. Aspose.Words allowed us to build document templates as Word documents, merge them with our data and the return a PDF document. In particular we needed to generate tabular data in our documents, in particular nested tabular data which is quite complex – Aspose.Words had an elegant solution for this. Security was also a concern for us, as we were worried about opening Word files on our servers, and we had read about the risks of using MS Office Automation in a server environment. Aspose.Words was the perfect solution for this since it doesn’t require MS Office to be installed on our servers. We also needed a way of allowing users to import & export data via Excel or CSV easily. From an import perspective, Aspose.Cells allows us to open Excel files on the server (without needing Excel installed), and programmatically navigate through Worksheets, Rows & Columns. As for exporting, Aspose.Cells allowed us to easily build an Excel or CSV file simply by providing a data table from our .NET middleware. ### 10. It supports over 100 file formats and doesn't require other libraries to get going. We started by using a template and mail merges but realised that it is simple to build up a whole document from scatch. Our favorite feature was building up a table with a simple for loop. **What do you dislike about Aspose.Total?** Upgrading versions can prove a little fiddly, especially if you are skipping versions in between. Compiling the code is relatively straightforward but it is difficult to spot where a new version may have rendered a document slightly differently in runtime. **Recommendations to others considering Aspose.Total:** Whilst you could write everything that this library does from scratch or use open-source, the price is not prohibitive and well worth the time it saves. **What problems is Aspose.Total solving and how is that benefiting you?** The business had a version control issue where current templates were not always being used when creating and sharing documents to clients. By embedding this library into our web application, the user could no longer select an outdated template. Better still, an incorrect document could be regenerated with the latest version within seconds. Benefits realized include that once the code had been written to create a document, you can easily flick the output from one file type to another (e.g. docx to pdf). With the .NET version, we were up and running within a day, the library is scalable, it is platform independent and has rich feature set - there are plenty of features we are still exploring and are pleasantly surprised with. ### 11. Recently, our R&D team has started to develop also software products, for internal use and for third parties. After a thorough research on the market, we found Aspose to offer the best solution for one feature of an important project. We are referring to Aspose.CAD library. After generating complex DXF files, we wanted to convert those files to PDF, in a simple way that can also assure high quality. These files included electrical schemas of the machines, and the mechanical designs of cooling/ heating systems. Aspose.CAD library was very easy to use (8 lines of code) and our client was happy with the results. **What do you dislike about Aspose.Total?** It is important to specify that the medium size of a DXF file containing the mechanical design was around 10 MB, PDF file showed a high quality and generation speed was satisfying. It was OK but when I found a giant bug: the pdf should be accessible AKA tagged, and this means that each paragraph should be tagged, in opposite they tagged each word and in the opposite direction, so they impair vision customer get the reading voice in the opposite direction), for more than a year I pray for them for correct the issue They suggested the payment for jumping the case up, otherwise FIFO, more than a year, it happens to me in Hebrew, so maybe in other languages all are superb but know that if you find a real bug, you have only yourself, and then maybe you will be deep in the nightmare of deployment **What problems is Aspose.Total solving and how is that benefiting you?** until U found a terrible bug it was great ### 13. We were pleased to receive an extension to the trial license period that allowed our developers to fully investigate the features of the Aspose.Total library, and that extra time allowed us to uncover two additional use-cases for the software. This increased the value-added for Aspose and reinforced our decision to purchase. Our new web-based application takes in a variety of "source documents" from the user and converts them to PDF as the standard file type for "working documents" within the platform. Once in PDF format, the web-based application manipulates the working PDF documents by splitting, combining, or annotating the files before providing the user an option to export the file set along with a report. Our requirements include being able to import Word documents, PowerPoint slides, Excel Workbooks, image files in a number of common formats, text files, and both searchable and non-searchable PDF files. During the development phase of our web-based application, we evaluated a number of software products and code libraries to perform the required file conversion and manipulation functions. The evaluation process included a number of open-source, licensed, and subscription-based software tools. Aspose.Total for .Net was the hands-down best solution available at the time. It was especially well suited for our development environment, specifically Microsoft Azure. Not only could the Aspose library convert multiple document types to PDF quickly and accurately, it could also manipulate PDFs in all the ways that we needed. Being a dynamically loaded library that did not require installation of specific software locally allowed us to code using the Azure App Service. Two additional use-cases for Aspose evolved as our developers started using the Aspose.Total for .Net libraries: generating reports and emails. By creating Word documents to serve as the base templates, our software could use Aspose to modify the report templates before converting them to finished PDF reports - thereby creating a very professional and well-structure report programmatically. These reports could contain all the custom headers, logos, and footers our clients wanted to see in a customized deliverable. Similarly, we could create HTML emails to serve as templates and use Aspose to modify the templates before sending well-designed emails to customers. Although difficult to capture a library's usefulness in an image, a picture is still worth a thousand words. There's almost nothing this library can't do. It's extremely powerful and gives you all the tools you need to work with Office files. It's updated frequently and the team stays on top of most major issues. **What do you dislike about Aspose.Total?** There are still some things that don't work quite right. Over the years, we've come across many bugs with loading and converting documents from Word or Excel to PNG images. Some of these bugs are still not fixed having been reported years ago, though, most are small issues and not deal breaking issues. **Recommendations to others considering Aspose.Total:** As with all software, check and make sure it meets your requirements. You can look for other libraries that do the same things, but most don't have the power of Aspose.Total. While we did have some issues throughout the years, we highly recommend it due to the features and updates that the team releases regularly. If you don't need all of the tools and features of Aspose.Total (especially for the price), you may be inclined to look at other, more cost effective solutions. While pricey, the library is absolutely worth it. One solution provided gave us a huge development overhead to use. The last point was particularly frustrating. We have had to rewrite all of our PDF templates to be able to use the new PDF Generation API in order to avoid bugs with the old one. I am sure Aspose could have respected our time more and provided a backwards compatible solution to fix the bugs. Another important bug that we encountered was that when modifying document properties (e.g. company, creator etc) the product is actually trying to regenerate the file instead of just editing those properties. Due to some bugs there sometimes the generated file is corrupted. No fix has been provided and we have had to drop aspose for this specific functionality (anonymization of files in our case) and seek alternatives. One other problem we have had is that as soon as the license expires just trying to reference the library causes your website/application to throw exceptions. I find this particularly unacceptable as it has caused generic erros with our applications when our infrastructure department did not install the updated license in time. Such a software should be limited to throwing errors when you are actually trying to USE it (e.g. in our case we should have encountered an error when trying to generate a pdf and not bring the whole web application down.) **Recommendations to others considering Aspose.Total:** I would say avoid if your use case is complex and you are processing lots of files as you may bump into frustrating bugs. **What problems is Aspose.Total solving and how is that benefiting you?** Conversion between document formats.
