Flexibility to write custom functions as well allows to use database. Can generate the code and customise if required. Provides flexibility to debug while doing the mapping. Most recommended tools for mapping solutions. It also the quickest way to finish mapping when compared to writing our own code or using other tools which are currently available in market. It provides all standard EDI format preloaded with in tools . Hence we do not have to spend time by configuring the EDI file. We as well can configure our own EDI file. **What do you dislike about Altova MapForce?** We do not get much of solutions in internet and mapforce blogs. We have to deep dive in sometimes. And the tools generates code in Java. Once mapping is done, based on the complexity it gets hard for identifying the nodes in the diagram. Has to provide much more ways to solve. Can provide guides using Video format over text. Its more easy for people to follow Video or animation over reading a full page or PDF. The tool as well needs support for character encodings. Sometimes the EDI's may contain native local language keyboard characters and reading those may raise faults. It is very easy to use and customize as well. No need to write any code. Drag and Drop anyone can understand. Since it is built in java we can write some user-defined functions in java and plug in to this MapForce tool. There are lot of in-built functions. EDI packages also available. **What do you dislike about Altova MapForce?** If we have more number of fields and there is some logic to be applied then the UI screen looks messy. We found that some complex mapping workflows are much easier to maintain using the GUI instead of coding them using conventional programming languages such as C#. You can even use external .Net libraries and no programming skills required. Automatic code generation is also an awesome feature, so we could compile the resulting code to an executable file and further use it in our automation workflows. **What do you dislike about Altova MapForce?** It would be great to add more output programming languages for code generation, such as Python. **What problems is Altova MapForce solving and how is that benefiting you?** We're using Altova Mapforce in our university for a little bit not so typical task - to assist our GIS(geographic information systems) analysts to load various data to our spatial databases. Sometimes the data should be significantly transformed during the process. For instance, using Altova Mapforce we implemented a workflow to convert symbology descriptions from MapInfo format to KML format. Another task where we used MapForce was to convert data from the Excel sheets to the database hosted on Microsoft SQL Server. The drag and map functions is the best part of the tool. Talking about how we use it, it makes testing very easy for us as the mapper can access our cross-ref tables also. I have worked on a lot of mapping tools earlier, but never have I came across a tool which can use the cross-ref tables in the desktop testing. One always has to go into a testing environment or production where he/she can actually see the tables working. Another important aspect is the help file. One of the best helps for any tool. It has helped me a lot as well as my customers. The help covers all questions. Making the X12 config files accessible is also an added advantage that Altova has put in. I can create another group of X12 files from these files as per my need. **What do you dislike about Altova MapForce?** The only shortcoming which I found is the aesthetic. Not all rows included in output and not all colums included etc. No head rows, no summary rows and no sumarry columns, use 2, 3, 5,6,7 rows(because row 4 is sum of 2 and 3) with node names 101,102,5,6,7! I most cases, for data translations, we prefer this tool over Microsoft's Integration services. Creating the initial mappings and then generating C# code made application development very fast. **What do you dislike about Altova MapForce?** Data inserts into SQL server are "row by row" without a "bulk insert" capability from the Altova MapForce application. This can consume a lot of memory and be a slow process. Learning curve is a bit steep when first starting out with Altova MapForce, but it has quite a few capabilities which we are realizing we have not yet started to use. **Recommendations to others considering Altova MapForce:** Good tool for converting EDI based data into SQL Server or other data repository. **What problems is Altova MapForce solving and how is that benefiting you?** Translation of different data sources into Microsoft SQL Server as a repeatable C#-based set of code integrated into an in-house and soon to be customer facing application. Development time for creating the interfaces has been much faster using this tool versus developing interfaces from scratch.
