For example, you want a numbered list nested in another number list - thsi is handled with ease and always correct. It is very easy to learn the basics and create great looking documents. It integrated very well with Adobe Acrobat for PDFpublishing. It's grapics tool is basic but still good enough for most graphics. Table handling is also excelllent. **What do you dislike about Adobe FrameMaker?** When it cannot find graphics that are in more than one folder, it goes through the file graphic by graphic, so you have to keep specifying the folder where the graphics are, back and forth rather than scanning the whole file for every graphic in the specified folder and only then requesting the folder for another missing graphic. **What problems is Adobe FrameMaker solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have a whole set of documentationthat is output to PDF and FrameMaker is the best option from every option I looked at. In the past I have used structured FrameMaker (DISA-based) and it also worked very well for ADA508 compliance. ### 2. Once documentation is written, it is ready to be reviewed with its collaboration capabilities that allow teams to address and review comments on documentation. When the editing process is finished and the team is done collaborating, the file can be tied to Adobe Experience Manager, opentext Documentum, SharePoint, DitaExchange, and many other content management systems. The program handles large documents very well and allows you to create online help files from the same source as your print/PDF manuals. The ability to auto-generate tables of content and indices is great. Framemaker also allows you to update the style of your documents easily through the authoring of new templates. You can export the document to many outputs and create crosslinks, internal references, etc. You can create a comprehensive set of variables that allow you to update standardized terms really easily, such as copyright dates and authors. **What do you dislike about Adobe FrameMaker?** Unlike the other reviewers on this site, I found the learning curve for Framemaker to be a little steep. And I actually know how to use Photoshop, so I am familiar with Adobe's menu logic. It's difficult to know which menu contains the function you want in Framemaker. When you work on large legacy documents like me that require constant updates, Framemaker can be frustrating. For example, sometimes applying a new template to an old document simply creates broken color definitions in addition to importing new colors. Other times, cross-references are impossible to find, given the number of conditional text layers you can create. And even with reasonable employee turnover, you end up inheriting document files whose invisible formatting is impossible to clean up. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe FrameMaker:** If you purchase this product, you should have a comprehensive training session with the product like my company provided. It would have been incredibly hard to start with Framemaker without the incredible support of my department. **What problems is Adobe FrameMaker solving and how is that benefiting you?** At the end of the day, Framemaker allows you to create multiple different types of help files/formats from one document. The software is very good at handling large documents and the ability to customize your document look and design is very valuable. ### 14. If you’re writing a book, you can easily set up an automatically generated Table of Contents, easy cross-links, and whatever kind of pagination you want. If you need to write about several similar products, want to hide text describing a feature that hasn’t yet been implemented but will be, need to support multiple versions of the same product, or want to use different paragraphs for printed docs vs online help, FM has conditional text. FM also has support for variables, enabling you to change values ranging from copyright dates to product names to headings in page headers and footers. You can create graphics using its built-in drawing mode, import graphics (by reference or directly inserted), or a combination of the two. With the latest version of FM, you can also save your output in a variety of formats. FM also works great for editing XML and DITA books. **What do you dislike about Adobe FrameMaker?** It costs $1k per license, and Adobe keeps trying to push its online subscription service, which is cheaper in the short run but pricier in the long run. FrameMaker also only runs on Windows these days. It used to work on several flavors of UNIX and with Mac OS. A lot of us wish Adobe would support Linus and Mac OS X. We writers are stuck using Windows because of Adobe while most of the rest of the company runs either Mac OS X or Linux. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe FrameMaker:** The learning curve is short. It is WYSIWYG (although in Structured mode you can see the invisible-to-end-users XML tags). Make sure it will output the formats you need. In some cases you might need Robohelp or WebWorks to create your output. **What problems is Adobe FrameMaker solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have a huge documentation set. We have things like copyright dates and product names. All books share the same “back matter” source files. Using FM and WebWorks, we are able to use a batch job to generate our document set. ### 15. I picked it up cold and began working, slowly, but working. It took some time to figure it out but there are good tutorials and forums to help you out ( I wouldn't count on Adobe). **What do you dislike about Adobe FrameMaker?** I like pictures. FrameMaker does not. I can add some but vector based works better. It can take a while to learn the secrets but like other Adobe products, worth learning well. **What problems is Adobe FrameMaker solving and how is that benefiting you?** We create many large technical manuals. Unfortunately, these manuals need regular edits and updates. FrameMaker is definitely moving up from our previous software. Although some of the changes get cumbersome in part due to the vector graphics we need to add. Part of this can also be different formats introduced also. But we have been able to productively compile thousand page documents with FrameMaker that killed us in Word. I became familiar with FM through work but chose it to create my own mini-book of my life. It is a different use that that of work and proved to be a fun adventure. ### 18. The tutorials on adobe tv are nice. I can integrate it with my own XML file and DITA content. I usually use my XML scripts to write my content, it is good i an use it with framemaker. Every software has bugs, but when a FrameMaker file becomes corrupted due to one, there's often no recourse because of the binary file type. Using FrameMaker is also very clunky, with very simple, basic formatting options like multiple levels of lists requiring several styles defined. Very easy to have a messy assortment of redundant styles if the team is not incredibly careful to follow exact processes. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe FrameMaker:** Try MadCap Flare - can do the exact same thing only file types are XML-based, so it's easier to find and correct problems. The PDF format is the best option. The book format makes it easy to create and update. It has software that converts the content from FrameMaker to a bunch of online help systems. Framemaker also has strong XML abilities that are used for publishing from databases and converting among a variety of formats. **What do you dislike about Adobe FrameMaker?** I don't like that is no longer supported by a Mac computer.this is tough because all other Adobe programs are able to perform on a Mac and I would like to have a Mac over a pc. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe FrameMaker:** This program is better than I design for technical writing. **What problems is Adobe FrameMaker solving and how is that benefiting you?** Technical content is complex so making easier to understand to a broad audience is always a problem. This software helps achieve the goal of getting a broader range of people to understand. ### 30. With Adobe you always have terrific online support, so that helps. **What do you dislike about Adobe FrameMaker?** While it's a useful and effective tool, there is a bit of a learning curve with it. I would almost like to see this either complete come to InDesign as a wholly integrated piece, or perhaps there already is a way to use this in an XML format. **What problems is Adobe FrameMaker solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've had to flow various large documents (product catalogs) in several language versions.
