&lt;p&gt;The insight about audit trail and QMS living in layers makes sense. The platform handles day-to-day standard work and shift handoff, and that&#39;s enough for internal audits. For anything customer-facing or ISO-scoped, it feeds your QMS, which is the system of record. Knowing which system an auditor will ask to see first saves painful retrofitting later.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I’d make the audit trail inside the work instructions platform the compliance backbone. If shift notes, approvals, document changes, and completed work are captured where the procedure is actually followed, there’s less reconciliation later. A separate quality system can still consume that data, but I’d want the original record created at the point of work.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;On the shift handoff specifically, what decides whether it works is usually structure rather than storage. A free-text note at end of shift captures whatever the person remembers, while a short set of required fields captures what the next shift needs. Has anyone found a middle ground there, or does the structured version just get filled in as all normal?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Both, in layers. The audit trail inside the tool covers day-to-day standard work and the shift handoff, and that&#39;s enough for internal audits. For anything customer-facing or ISO-scoped, the work instruction system feeds our QMS, which stays the system of record. My advice is to decide which system your auditor will actually ask to see before you buy, because retrofitting that connection later is painful. VKS&#39;s traceability made the handoff easier than I expected, for what it&#39;s worth.&lt;/p&gt;
