&lt;p&gt;Both, in layers. The audit trail inside the tool covers day-to-day standard work and the shift handoff, and that&#39;s enough for internal audits. For anything customer-facing or ISO-scoped, the work instruction system feeds our QMS, which stays the system of record. My advice is to decide which system your auditor will actually ask to see before you buy, because retrofitting that connection later is painful. VKS&#39;s traceability made the handoff easier than I expected, for what it&#39;s worth.&lt;/p&gt;
