# Which ecommerce platform is actually best for retailers managing hundreds of product variants with different regional pricing?

Hey G2 community! I'm putting together a roundup on ecommerce platforms for retail brands and one question I keep landing on is: which platform is actually best for retailers managing hundreds of product variants with different regional pricing? The variant and pricing matrix problem sounds simple until you're actually in it, and what breaks first varies a lot by platform.

From retail-industry reviews I've been going through:

Shopify: Inventory management for high-variant products gets called out as clean, especially CSV bulk updates. But variant limits on lower plans are a real constraint as catalogues grow. Has anyone hit that ceiling and had to restructure?

Shopify Plus: Multiple currencies, regional pricing lists, and expansion stores from one backend. For retailers with genuine multi-market pricing, is Plus the point where it actually becomes manageable?

BigCommerce: Built-in complex catalogue management without needing apps for the basics. No transaction fees regardless of payment processor, which matters when margins are tight across regions.

The developer overhead is real though. At what variant and region count does that tradeoff actually make sense?

Shopify Plus's expansion stores from one backend is the feature that actually solves this, not just multi-currency display. Curious where the line is though, at what SKU count does even Plus start to feel tight?

Another dimension that turns the same matrix from large into unmanageable: promotions sitting on top of it. A regional price list is a static table, and most platforms hold one fine at the size described here. A twenty percent sale is a rule evaluated over that table, and the detail nobody checks during evaluation is whether the discount calculates from the regional price or from the base price before conversion. Get that wrong and one market runs a week at the wrong margin while the storefront looks completely normal throughout. The test worth running in a trial is creating a market-specific price, layering a percentage discount over it, and checking the arithmetic in a currency that isn't your home one.

The scale problem here isn't variants or regions on their own, it's that they multiply. Three hundred products with ten variants and eight regional price lists is 24,000 price points, so the thing to test is whether a bulk update can address one market's entire list in a single operation. If a currency shifts and repricing one region means touching every product row, that's the day the matrix stops being manageable regardless of platform.
