# Which document management platforms enable self-hosted control over data while maintaining secure team collaboration?

Hi G2 users, self-hosting a system almost always means giving up something on the collaboration side, so I've been sorting through which document management platforms actually manage to keep data self-hosted while still maintaining secure team collaboration.

Laserfiche: supports an on-prem setup directly, and teams running it that way note the on-prem version carries feature and integration options the cloud version doesn't fully match, which matters when self-hosting is the whole point.

Hyland OnBase: built with security and automation as core features rather than add-ons, with teams running it on their own systems describing documents staying locked down by default even as automation handles more of the routine work.

DocuWare: centralizes documents into a single secure repository with access and version controls built in, letting a team manage who can see or restrict specific files without building that logic themselves.

M-Files: ties permissions to the document's metadata rather than its storage location, so access rules and version history travel with the file itself regardless of where it's hosted.

For teams that have actually made the self-hosted move, how much collaboration functionality did you end up losing compared to the cloud version, and was it worth the trade-off?

The key trade-off is whether self-hosting preserves collaboration features such as versioning, permissions, workflow automation, and secure external sharing without creating a heavy admin burden. I’d compare what functionality is lost on-prem, how updates are handled, and whether access controls stay easy to manage as teams and document volumes grow.
