# What should a small software startup evaluate when picking a contractor payment platform for global hiring and staying compliant from day one?

<p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">For an early-stage startup piece, I’m outlining what a small software startup should evaluate when picking a contractor payment platform for global hiring and staying compliant from day one. The decision seems to come down to contractor location, tax handling, misclassification risk, setup time, and how quickly costs scale.</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">In<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/contractor-payments"> </a><a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/contractor-payments">contractor payments</a>, I’d separate the options this way:</p><ul>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/gusto/reviews"><strong>Gusto</strong></a><strong>:</strong> Best suited for US-based small businesses that need domestic contractor onboarding and tax filing. It is less complete for international contractor coverage.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/deel-payroll/reviews"><strong>Deel Payroll</strong></a><strong>:</strong> Strong for international contractor hiring without local entities, with quick setup. Pricing can scale quickly.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/remote/reviews"><strong>Remote</strong></a><strong>:</strong> Useful for compliance-first global hiring and HR integrations like HiBob. Support quality varies.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/rippling/reviews"><strong>Rippling</strong></a><strong>:</strong> More feature-dense and expensive, but useful for startups expecting broader HR complexity.</li>
</ul><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">The part I’d like to hear more about is what founders wish they had checked before making their first international contractor hire.</p>

The thing I&#39;d tell early-startup-you: &quot;compliant from day one&quot; mostly means don&#39;t misclassify a contractor who&#39;s functionally an employee, because that&#39;s the mistake that gets expensive in exactly the countries you&#39;re hiring in. Payment rails are the easy part. Classification and local rules are the compliance part. Are these genuine contractors, or full-timers you&#39;re calling contractors to skip paperwork? If it&#39;s the latter, you want an EOR option before you have a problem, not after.
