The whiteboard worked because everyone could see it and update it without logging into anything. The mistake a lot of shops make when switching is picking software that has way more capability than their team will actually use in year one. You end up paying for complexity nobody touches. Starting with something that solves the three biggest daily frustrations and expanding from there usually goes a lot better than trying to implement everything at once.
