# What is the most affordable social analytics software for SMBs?

My peer is in marketing at a small business, and one of the biggest challenges they run into is finding social media analytics software that gives them the insights they need without enterprise-level pricing. Pulling engagement data manually from each social platform gets time-consuming, so I’ve been helping them shortlist the tools, especially since I’ve used a few myself. I also looked at the latest G2 Grid Report for Social Media Analytics (Small Business segment) to see what’s performing well, and we ended up with a shortlist of the top 5:

Hootsuite: The most recognized all-in-one option. While it’s widely used across all business sizes, many G2 users note its broad feature set makes it a strong reference point for engagement tracking.

Sprout Social: Frequently praised for polished reporting and collaboration. Reviewers often mention how easy it is to generate presentation-ready engagement reports.

Zoho Social: Frequently recommended by SMB reviewers for being cost-effective and straightforward. Many highlight its clean dashboards and easy setup as big advantages for small teams.

Semrush: Known for its SEO capabilities. But seeing reviewers also mention its social analytics as a plus, especially the ability to connect content performance and engagement trends in one platform.

SOCi: Seeing this strongly recommended for multi-location brands. Users highlight how it simplifies rolling up engagement data across multiple accounts or pages.

I also saw other popular names that SMB marketers mention, such as Vista Social, Agorapulse, Statusbrew, SocialPilot, BuzzSumo,

Buffer, ContentStudio, Planable, Whatagraph, and Metricool.

That’s what came up in the report, but I’m curious how this plays out in practice.

For small business marketers out there:

What features actually matter most at the SMB stage?

Have you found tools outside the usual leaders that are better suited to smaller teams?

I’d love to hear how other SMBs are approaching this decision.

Zoho Social has honestly been the best fit for us from a cost-to-value standpoint. It’s not the flashiest tool out there, but for a small team that just needs solid engagement tracking, basic reporting, and something easy to set up, it does the job without feeling overpriced.

Buffer and Metricool both came up a lot for us because they feel more aligned with how SMB teams actually work. Less overhead, fewer layers, and easier to get value out of quickly.

From what we’ve seen, the biggest mistake SMBs make is choosing a tool based on feature depth instead of actual reporting needs. It’s easy to get pulled toward something like Hootsuite or Sprout because they’re well known and clearly capable, but if your team mainly needs engagement trends, basic comparisons across channels, and client- or stakeholder-ready reports, you may not need that much platform.

One thing we realized pretty quickly is that affordable is not just about the monthly price. It is also about how much manual work the tool removes.

A lower-cost platform can look like the better deal at first, but if you still have to clean up reports, pull data from different places, or do too much formatting yourself, it starts costing more in time. For a small team, that tradeoff matters a lot.

Also, can SMBs just go with the free versions of these tools isntead of using a paid one? Seeing some options here https://www.g2.com/categories/social-media-analytics/free
