 Here are the main designations and provider roles you may encounter:

Registered Cisco Partner: This indicates that the company participates in Cisco's partner program. Registration alone doesn't establish data center expertise, so verify whether the partner can transact and support the Cisco products you need in your country.

Portfolio Partner / Preferred Partner: These designations are earned within specific Cisco portfolios and indicate relevant sales, technical, and practice capabilities. For a data center project, confirm that the provider's current designation applies specifically to Cloud and AI Infrastructure, rather than another Cisco portfolio.

Value-added reseller (VAR): A VAR combines product sales with services such as solution design, installation, integration, and support. Ask which services the reseller delivers itself, which are included in the proposal, and whether subcontractors will perform any part of the project.

Systems integrator: A systems integrator may design, integrate, and deploy the data center environment without selling the Cisco products itself. If that's the case, establish who will handle product procurement and licensing and how responsibilities will be divided between providers.

Managed service provider (MSP): An MSP operates or supports the environment after launch, including monitoring, patching, incident response, and ongoing lifecycle management under a recurring contract. Verify what's contractually covered after deployment and whether the MSP is also responsible for implementation or takes over from another provider.

Distributor: Distributors generally supply Cisco products to resellers and VARs rather than selling directly to end customers. You may never contract directly with the distributor, but it can still sit behind the reseller's Cisco hardware supply chain.
