The protocol analysis capability is the feature I value the most. Wireshark supports a huge number of protocols and automatically decodes traffic in a way that is easy to understand. Whether I am analyzing DNS, HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, UDP, QUIC, or application-specific traffic, the detailed packet breakdown helps me quickly identify issues. The filtering functionality is another major advantage. During large packet captures with thousands of packets, display filters help me isolate the exact traffic I need within seconds. Features like Follow TCP Stream, packet coloring, conversation analysis, endpoint statistics, and protocol hierarchy make investigation much faster. The user interface is well organized and allows both high level and deep packet analysis from a single screen. Performance is excellent even when working with the large capture files. Since it is widely used across the industry, collaborating with network, security, server, and application teams becomes easier because everyone understands the packet capture format. Another thing I appreciate is that Wireshark integrates well into existing troubleshooting workflows. We frequently use it alongside firewalls, network monitoring tools, and security platforms to validate traffic flow and investigate incidents. Considering the level of functionality it provides, the return on investment is outstanding. It has become an essential troubleshooting tool in our environment and is one of the first applications I open when dealing with a network related issue. My overall experience with Wireshark has been very very positive. It is one of the most reliable and valuable tools in our IT operations and network troubleshooting processes. We use it regularly for incident investigation, performance analysis, security verification, and root cause analysis. There is very little to disklike about Wireshark from a functionality perspective because it does exactly what it is designed to do. If I had to mention one area, it would be that new users can initially feel overwhelmed by the amount of information displayed on the scree. Since Wireshark provides deep packet-level visibility, there is a learning curve before someone can fully understand protocols and packet analysis techniques. However, this is not really a limitation of the product itself. In my experience, once an engineer spends some time learning filters, packet decoding, and analysis features, the tool becomes much easier to use and extremely powerful. The extensive documentation and large user community also make onboarding easier. I would like to see more built in guided analysis and AI assisted troubleshooting recommendations for junior engineers, especially when reviewing large packet captures. That said, the current capabilities are already strong enough for professional troubleshooting, and the accuracy and reliability of the packet analysis are excellent. I work in the IT and Network Security field, and Wireshark is one of the tools we use almost every day for packet level troubleshooting. It helps us understand how data is traveling across the network and identify exactly where communication is failing. In many critical incidents, standard logs from firewalls, routers, switches, or servers are not enough. Wireshark allows us to capture and analyze packets in real time and see what is happening behind the scenes. We use it for troubleshooting application connectivity issues, DNS resolution failures, TCP handshake problems, SSL/TLS communication errors, packet drops, retransmissions, latency issues, and firewall related traffic investigations. It is especially useful when working with vendors because we can provide packet captures as evidence instead of replying on assumptions. One example from my daily work involved users reporting intermittent access issues to a business application. Honestly, what I like best about Wireshark is how Visibility it gives you into what's actually happening on a network. Like, you can see every single packet flying around in real time it just feels powerful. I remember the first time I used it during a networking lab, I was genuinely surprised at how much data is constantly moving even when you think nothing's going on. The display filters are also something I really appreciate. Once you get the hang of them, you can cut through thousands of packets and zero in on exactly what you need wheather it's just HTTP traffic, a specific IP, or a particular protocol. It saves so much time compared to just scrolling blindly. And the fact that it's free and open source but still this capable? That's rare. What do you dislike about Wireshark? Honestly. the learning curve is probably my biggest gripe with Wireshark. When you first open it, you're just hit with this wall of packets scrolling by super fast, and if you don't already have some networking background, it can feel really overwhelming. There's no real "beginner mode" or guided setup it just throws you in the deep end. The interface also feels a bit dated to me. It's functional, sure, but it dosen't feel the most intuitive, especially when you're trying to navigate through deeper settings or setup more complex capture filters. Sometimes I find myself Googling things that I feel should be easier to find within the tool itself. Another thing is performance when you're capturing on a busy network, the amount of data it pulls in can get massive really quickly, and it starts to slow down or become hard to manage. Filtering helps, but sometimes you don't always know what you're looking for until after capture, which means you end up with these huge files that are a pain to work through. At it's core, Wireshark solves the problem of network invisibility meaning, without a tool like this you really have no idea what's actually happening on your network at the packet level. You might know your connection is low or something feels off, but you can't pinpoint why. Wireshark basically gives you a microscope for your network traffic. For me personally, the biggest benefit has been in troubleshooting. Whether it's figuring out why a particular application isn't connecting properly, or spotting unusual traffic that shouldn't be there, Wireshark lets you actually diagnose the problem instead of just guessing. That's huge, especially when you're working on anything network related and need real answers fast. It's also been really valuable from a learning perspective. When I was studing networking concepts like TCP handshakes, DNS resolution, or HTTP request reading about them in a textbook is one thing, but actually seeing them happen live in Wireshark makes everything click so much faster. IT bridges that gap between theory and reality really well. From a security standpoint too, it helps identify things like suspicious connections, unencrypted data being sent, or potential signs of something malicious on the network.
