Licensing is horrendous and has a Cinderella termination which deactivates itself from existing installations, requiring you to upgrade your license. While they claim you have an additional 30 days to reactivate and install previous versions this is not functional and the software becomes dormant. Support does not care and will not help you if you are not continually paying them money. **What problems is VISUAL ASSIST solving and how is that benefiting you?** None anymore, they shutdown all of my licensing and refuse to help unless I renew. ### 3. It makes searching, refactoring code, and writing new code so much easier. Some feature examples: write out a class declaration and then have Visual Assist write the stubs for the member definitions for you in the corresponding source file, rename variables across the whole project, search for declarations/definitions faster than IntelliSense can find them, open a file anywhere in the solution in only a few keystrokes, etc, etc. It's quite handy and easy to use. It's remarkable that they still support the full range of Visual Studio versions over history, all the way from Visual Studio 6 to Visual Studio 2022. Customer support has been very helpful as well, whenever I've run into bugs. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** Some of the features are a little annoying to configure properly. I use VA alongside GitHub Copilot, and VA's suggestion menus that appear while typing will conflcit with the tab-completion keybinding for Copilot and I haven't found a good way around that so I generally leave VA's suggestion boxes disabled. Those suggestion lists also sometimes complete what I'm typing with something completely nonsensical that is nowhere near what I was typing (e.g. calling a destructor somewhere in some random STL class declaration, instead of calling the class function name I was typing out). The "open file in solution" dialog has some bizarre behavior on occasion, where the search text I gave it will utterly confuse it and it doesn't show files I would expect it to. **What problems is VISUAL ASSIST solving and how is that benefiting you?** Searching for code, refactoring, static analysis, etc. It speeds up the process a lot, and I have it tightly integrated into my workflow. ### 4. The navigation bar alone is worth the price of the license. Find Symbol, Search Files, Open File are all a million times faster than in Visual Studio and they are color-highlighted. Symbol highlighting is perfect - you can immediately see where a variable is written to and read from. Refactoring options far exceed Visual Studio's. And the code recent inspection feature is brilliant at flagging up potential sloppy code. There are too many great features to mention. And it doesn't bog down the IDE like Resharper does. I keep coming back to Visual Assist. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** I'd like more syntax coloring options :). Sometimes the italic font is rendered as just slanted characters which annoys me far more than it should. Sometimes the code generation/moving feature messes up and you have to do it by hand. I would love the auto-include header file feature to use "xxx" for project header files and for system headers. The VISX seems to take forever to install. Its search and reference-finding tools are second-to-none. I rely almost every day on its ability to open a class directly without knowing what file contains it, and its ability to find every reference to an object. Refactoring tools have become muscle memory. I feel utterly limited when I sit down at a Visual Studio installation that doesn't have Visual Assist installed. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** The two issues I had in the past have both been resolved in recent updates so they're really no longer problems. The first was that VA didn't offer a subscription plan for individual purchasers, so renewing was an unnecessarily cumbersome project, but they fixed that. The second was that on Unreal Engine's enormous codebase, initial project indexing could take a long while, during which VA's utility was limited, but the 2024 releases dramatically sped up this process too. I don't really have any current complaints. **What problems is VISUAL ASSIST solving and how is that benefiting you?** I develop in C++ for Unreal Engine professionally, and can't imagine doing this without Visual Assist. The Unreal codebase is enormous, and very often I'll need to explore it to see what a given method does. With VA I'm able to open an object, whether it be a class or a method directly by name even if I have no idea where it is, and then immediately list everywhere the object is called, read, or modified. I use its refactoring tools like intelligent renaming and method extraction almost daily. Even something as simple as its outstanding syntax highlighting makes a tremendous difference, since Unreal has a huge range of engine-defined types and macros which Visual Assist correctly recognizes and highlights. I could go on but really it's fair to say that for Unreal Engine development, Visual Assist is as or more important than any other part of Visual Studio. ### 6. The greatest asset VA provides for me, is enabling seamless navigation through a project via several shortcuts and tools: Find References, Open Corresponding files, VA View/Outline/Hashtags, and more. Beyond that, the code completion and highlighting that it provides along with its UnrealEngine integration is almost a necessity for my productive development at this point, as I'd otherwise be complaining about VisualStudio every step of the way. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** The worst part of visual assist is that it doesnt come included with VisualStudio installation. You will be without VA's quick navigation. I've seen new colleagues not using VA struggling with basic "I can't find this definition" or "sorry it took the whole day, it takes so long to find anything." The most simple everyday refactoring options (e.g., rename) that are surprisingly clever are also beneficial. I usually say I love Visual Studio, but to be frank, it's VA that makes this IDE the best. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** The price tag! Just kidding. E.g. I write something like ClassObject myObj; and the compiler tells me it doesn't understand. Just right-click and 'Add Include'. Done. There are tons more. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** VA can get lost with big projects. We have a very large solution with 63 project and 11 configurations with multiple #defines. Right now I have a problem where VA thinks I'm using the wrong header file. It is using one from another config. The things it does seem so obvious and trivial - things like quickly finding any file in the solution, quickly finding any symbol, intelligently renaming symbols, etc. And yet, somehow, these seemingly very basic things just aren't supported in Visual Studio. The time saved through the use of these very basic things is quite incalculable to the point where there's just no reason for anyone to ever use Visual Studio without Visual Assist. I can't understand why Microsoft didn't buy Visual Assist and incorporate it into Visual Studio 15 years ago. But until such time, if you use Visual Studio you need to use Visual Assist. That's all there is to it. Otherwise, you're wasting a ton of time and crippling your productivity. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** The only downside I've found to Visual Assist, which is so minor as to barely even deserve mention, is the first time you open a project it has to scan the solution to understand the symbols for ease of searching thereafter. But it's a very fast, one-time time cost that unlocks huge time savings thereafter. **Recommendations to others considering VISUAL ASSIST:** If you use Visual Studio, you just need Visual Assist. It benefits me by allowing me to save a ton of time that would otherwise be spent using Visual Studio's far more frustrating built-in features. ### 17. Change signature of a function (when it works, ~90% of the time). Rename for variables and methods is a game changer. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** As you write code Visual Assist gets confused and typing latency gets really bad—so annoying—on an Intel i9. All refactorings break. So you have to go in tiny steps, get your code to build so that Visual Assist can understand the code. Only Visual Studio itself is getting better about refactoring, and Visual Studio 2019 can usually beat Visual Assist for simple things. For example when you type a new function declaration, the command to create the definition will be disabled for ~7 seconds while Visual Assist figures out there is a new declaration, so I just use the Visual Studio command to create the definition. List methods used to highlight what method you were in so you could refresh your memory on what arguments are being passed, but hasn't for years anymore—now it is just a list. Find symbol dialog mixes symbols across projects and included directories, even with the "Show only symbols define in current solution" option checked. Support is good, but slow and takes so much back and forth just because of how complicated the program is, and the amount of project properties investigation you have to do. Visual Assist support st be a hard role to hire for: basically a programmer that wants to do support—so I empathize. But even after sending them all my code for a small ~30K project, I wasn't able to get the parsing working—and I gave up and stopped renewing. The couple of updates per year address how I use the program. The basics have been getting worse year after year as the company is focusing on differentiating features and marketing. The last 12 months of updates have just been for Unreal Engine and Code Inspection—which just pesters you to change your typedefs to using statements, and your defines to constexprs. **What problems is VISUAL ASSIST solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've been using Visual Assist since 2008, when it was like oxygen as it could give you a tooltip of a function's signature when Intellisense couldn't. But Visual Studio got better. Now its best feature is the Find Symbol window which I use unconsciously while navigating code, and for that—it is easily worth the ~100 USD a year. There are still bugs with it that don't get fixed, or even an option to filter what directory it is seaching—but if they ever have a bug fix or feature for it, I would renew. But it is still a fuzzy finder written in the 2000s and it shows. Vim / Visual Studio Code already has way better fuzzy finders. ### 18. When using Visual Assist, I find that I spend much less time combing through Unreal Engine code as well as my own. The 'Search for Symbol' feature also allows filtering out engine code in order to quickly find symbols within my own code. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** I have no major complaints so far. Any problems I have I'm sure can be quickly handled by WholeTomato and their community. **What problems is VISUAL ASSIST solving and how is that benefiting you?** When working with large codebases in Visual Studio, it is often incredibly time-consuming waiting on Intellisense to parse all that information. It can also take an incredible amount of time to parse the code for specific files or symbols. Visual Assist has become almost an industry standard. My employers over the past 5 years have all provided it. **What do you dislike about VISUAL ASSIST?** Visual assist may be losing the competitive edge on the marketplace due to Visual Studio Code incorporating very similar if not the same features for free. When given the option, I would choose a free product over the paid one if they are very similar. **What problems is VISUAL ASSIST solving and how is that benefiting you?** On its own, Visual Studio is customizable. However, most users do not want to sit down and customize it to the extent that we get with Visual Assist. In addition to that, it is sometime difficult to export the setting from VS to another user's machine. Visual Assist provides optimal settings out of the box. ### 25.
