Transcad, a software for transportation planning in GIS environment **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Victor N. | Analista de bases de datos, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** March 12, 2024 **What do you like best about TransCAD?** What I like most about Transcad is the ease of loading information and how intuitive the software is, especially for users who have knowledge of CAD and vector GIS. It is handled with simple processes for obtaining the products linked to the analysis of networks and saturation of the transport network. I have been using Transcad frequently for 15 years in urban mobility research in public transport in Latin American cities and it offers an excellent solution, its inclusion and implementation in monitoring projects is simple. The basic requirements of the software allow it to be deployed on basic, inexpensive or medium performance equipment, the license cost is affordable for small companies, universities and low income research groups. This software allows to deploy cartographic bases generated in other software, its level of compatibility and interoperability of formats has increased with the new versions, adapting to the information exchange environment of today's world, offers integration opportunities, the resulting vectors can be sent to other software for visualization of geolocated results. **What do you dislike about TransCAD?** If you want to test the demo version before purchasing the license you should test it in a short period of time, sometimes the offered time is not enough. From my point of view it is necessary to implement improvements in the options to visualize wepmaps images in the background. **What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?** Transcad allows to solve many problems in the planning of public transport routes, location of stops and saturation of networks or critical points in the public transport network. ### 2. I cannot think of anything that I dislike. **Recommendations to others considering TransCAD:** Once you use TransCAD you will find the robustness of the software. The negative comments are usually by the ones who have not touched the software. **What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is truly a planning tool for transportation and even for certain urban planning problems (i.e., accessibility, walkability, connectivity, etc.). Moreover, an excellent tool for data analysis using its various functions. ### 5. So powerful is its data structure that one can use matrix operations in the industry standard matrix model. None of the GIS software are capable of matrix modeling --- the foundation of mathematical modeling where vectors are involved ... **What do you dislike about TransCAD?** That it doesn't have a version decoupled from transportation planning and engineering (so that it can be sold as a standalone gis) **Recommendations to others considering TransCAD:** Way more powerful than any GIS. Comparable to Mathematica. Does it's job and more ... **What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?** Research and teaching. Students learn advanced topics like p-median solutions and redistricting in first semester of gis use! ### 6. I attended the TransCAD Training in Newton, MA., and it helped me a great deal in getting to know many capabilities this software has. **What do you dislike about TransCAD?** Perhaps more active technical support would be nice. I ran into issues where I did not realize I had to go through different steps before being able to run a certain command. **Recommendations to others considering TransCAD:** Spend some time on your own to get familiar with the steps.
