It feels incredibly secure, is very well-documented, and is extremely easy to use, typical of the best tools in this space. I use the free tier which has been more than sufficient for the needs of my business. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** I personally don't have any negatives when it comes to using Tailscale. It checks literally all my boxes. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** Tailscale addresses a critical need: secure, seamless remote access without the complexity of traditional VPNs. Also this works for my NAS, I can not remove any exposure to it from the internet, and allow only LAN access, which allows me to access it remotely with TS. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** Tailscale is good for small “home scale” networks. I find it very cumbersome for large scale networks (eg at production scale networks) where you have to want to do more advanced stuff like DNS routing, granular ACLs, etc. Some of it is technically possible with Tailscale but it is very cumbersome and doesn’t scale well. For personal use, I think netbird and zerotier to be functionally similar and different pros/cons. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am not any sort of network guru. I just wanted to be able to access my home Linux box remotely with a laptop or tablet. Getting this set up using ddns and port forwarding through the cable box was getting to be a pain. Maybe I'm just not smart enough. I read about tailscale and a couple of YouTube videos I decided to give it a try. Couldn't have been easier. It's great that the device doesn't need a public IP for others to connect to it. I use Tailscale with PFSENSE and a few other servers, especially AWS, and it works great in terms of security and ease of use. Its ability to support multi-platforms like Apple TV is a really great feature. The initial setup of Tailscale is very straightforward, and the manual and documentation contain everything that's needed. If I find anything confusing, I can easily refer to YouTube videos to walk me through the setup. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** I think the thing that Tailscale doesn't work well is the authentication. A lot of times, almost always, you would have to sign in your Google account to authenticate a device. And sometimes if you have not used Tailscale for a long time, it'll prompt you for re-signing in your Google account to log in to your Tailscale account. In some cases where the device is sitting behind a network with strict regulations preventing Google access, like in China, you wouldn't be able to authenticate yourself and thus can't use Tailscale effectively. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Tailscale to connect my network stations globally, solving NAT traversal issues and enabling peer-to-peer device connectivity without needing a public IP. ### 5. You might be blocked out every now and then. For example, maybe they have some caches, so they keep your credentials locally for around forty-eight hours or seventy-two hours, so you might be logged out. Network isolation or something needs to be taken care of. I was ready to spend a few hours learning the TS (TailScale) dashboard and it's implementations. I think that I'm all of 15 minutes in and have 4 devices already connected. For the devices such as my managed switch that don't have a way to add the TS client it's ridiculously east to sub net to it through one of my NAS's or PC. I can't seem to find anything negative to say about my experience so for. I'll be curious as time goes by to see if I'm ever connected to the DERP server. The ACLs allow fine grained control between users and devices, regardless of where they live on the network, which massively reduces the admin burden of maintaining IP lists and allows security teams audit who has access to what and apply the principle of least privilege. The staff at Tailscale are very friendly and it's clear they want to build what their users want. The calls we have had with their teams have been very productive and it really feels like they value our feedback when deciding how to build features. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** A lot of Tailscale's features (e.g. magic DNS) are inherently tied to the tailnet DNS name, which can make integration with existing services more difficult. It would be useful to allow clients to connect to a WireGuard server while still being able to ping each other. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** When working in different environments, IP address might change. Tailscale gives each device a static IP and hostname so that programs like reverse proxies and whatnot don't have to be reconfigured every time. ### 18. Also, tailscale is very good at finding the shortest route between devices - giving it an edge over using a standard self-hosted vpn like OpenVPN or Wireguard. Additionally, tailscale allows you to "share" devices, this, in addition to the simple setup process, makes it an invaluable tool when doing troubleshooting for others. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** The IOS app needs some heavy improvement. As far as usability, the app works relatively fine, however it tremendously drains battery life. Also, in networks where 'tailscale.com' is blocked, the app will not connect - this is also an issue when using a desktop computer. The DERP servers should be implemented in a way that allows for connection around this method of blocking. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed a way to access devices from outside of our internal network. Tailscale greatly simplified and improved this system, especially with their DERP relays, which allow firewalled devices to connect to the same network. Previously, we used Wireguard/OpenVPN to do this. We needed this system because Wireguard provided speed advantages, and OpenVPN could be run on TCP port 80 (to get around most firewalls). Additionally, tailscale was a 'subnet router' that allows the entire internal network to be exposed with only one tailscale-connected device. This allows for seamless connection with out internal servers from anywhere in the world. ### 19. This allows any devices on the Tailscale network to access each other regardless of any firewalls or network obstacles. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** Their Android client is lackluster, making it difficult to use an Android phone as a server for various purposes such as app testing. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** University networks are often segmented for security reasons. Keeping staff, student, and IoT networks segregated prevents malicious devices from spreading over the network as easily. The segementation, however, can be cumbersome when devices need to talk to each other across these different networks. The simple, yet secure mesh VPN Tailscale provides means we don't have to worry about managing complex VPN configurations, making things just work. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** The lack of an official self-hosted option means we must depened on the cloud for a production-ready solution. Our business takes data privacy seriously, and having to depend on the cloud means yet another provider. While solutions such as Headscale exist, they lack important business features like SSO. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** Oftentimes our employees are not working on site. They may be on the go or at home. Before we had Tailscale, we had to manually configure a VPN profile for each employee and show the employee how to enable it on their laptop. The result was a lot of complaints to I.T. about the VPN not working. Tailscale simplified everything. Tailscale is able to run in the background without and hitch, and utilizes a myriad of technologies to ensure the connection succeeds. We now hardly ever get complaints about the VPN. ### 21. Rolling it out to the organization was even easier. The use of SAML SSO and the requirement to authenticate each machine (client node), provides a strong and convenient security control with a defence-in-depth approach to your operational security. Then we throw in ACLs, IdP conditional access policies, Tailscale SSH, exit nodes, Tailscale sharing to guests, and it becomes an obvious addition to your networking infrastructure. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** I would like to be able to reference my IdP (Azure AD, Okta, etc.) security groups when defining my ACLs. Implementing a DNS solution has not been straightforward, since we heavily use node-relays. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** Tailscale has allowed us to close all the publically facing doors and operate with a truly private network. Because of our business, we do need some physical hardware in our office, but we also are taking advantage of the flexibility of the cloud. On the infrastructure development side, Tailscale gives us flexibility to connect cloud and physical resources securely. It lets us design our network and security in the logical fashion we'd like without physical locality constraining us. Our team is partially remote, and many of them _don't need_ to know whether the resources are local or in the cloud. They can work effectively from wherever they are. Tailscale has been reliable for us and has allowed us to adapt quickly as the sands of startup life shift beneath our feet. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** I didn't initially understand the differences between "teams" and "business" plans from their page because I didn't understand how their ACLs work. I think much use of ACLs will likely require a switch to the business plan. I don't think there's anything terribly _wrong_ with this; it was just a surprise to me. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** - Transparent use of devices in cloud and physical locations for team use, and product development. - VPN-like remote access. - Ability to switch on for full traffic protection when on sketchy networks such as coffee shops. ### 27. This limits the attack surface for potential security threats whilst still allowing you access to your devices remotely. They make it incredibly easy to get started with a VPN. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** There's no ability to share network subnets with other Tailscale members. This essentially restricts access to a local network to only one person without a paid plan. We used Tailscale for our remote workers, as well as for a couple of site2site VPNs, with great success. We also use it as a bridge to an IKEv2 exit node, which works like a charm. The onboarding of users is a no-brainer, and the cross-platform experience is just superb. **What do you dislike about Tailscale?** The ACL configuration could be better, the syntax sometimes forces you to be repetitive, and it becomes a lot (and a mess) if you are not careful. We combine it with server-side firewall rules. **What problems is Tailscale solving and how is that benefiting you?** We got rid of a maintenance burden and won a lot of time in the on-boarding and off-boarding of employees and externals. The fact that everything works neatly on iOS and Linux helped us reduce the number of software tools we use to one, and close the gap with our cloud. ### 31. You run routers between sites?
