Always engaged and understanding of our requirements and even pushed back on some things they thought would be an unecessary expense was refreshing. The hardware is superbly quick and management interface is relativley simple. 5 star support all the way through, including the migration from old VM's onot the new hardware and followup support after the fact. I cannot fault the service or the system **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** There are a few 'like' to haves that other vendors provide such as de-duplication and snapshotting but as they have explained there is an overhead to these and we are all about maximising our compute and storage speeds and have not missed having those. Need to be aware if you migrate from a system that dedupes to Starwind there will be an impact on available storage to specify what is required in advance. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** The ability to combine storage management across 3 nodes rather than the single point of failure that a SAN has. ### 4. We were able to go from a 3 server + SAN solution over to a 2 node HCA which reduced our licensing and replacement costs. Proactive support has been great at identifying issues even before we noticed and these have been fixed quickly. **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** We weren't told prior to implementing the system that we couldn't use the Windows based appliance due to selecting NVMe storage while specing the system. If we'd know this may have affected out storage choice although the Linux VM has been fine. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** As a non-profit SMB we were hit with Broadcom's acquisition of VMware which looked to greatly increase our costs without providing any real benefit. We use primarily Microsoft technologies and after reviewing the pros and cons, were interested in migrating to Hyper-V and replace some aging hardware. Rather than go for a like for like refresh we looked at other options and StarWind offered more performance and support at a reasonable price. Their proactive support has already proved useful and we get to cut down the number of devices requiring fireware updates. ### 5. We wanted to simplify our environment while also cutting costs on server equipment. We compared a couple different vendors but settled on Starwind for the cost and excellent reviews. We replaced our old VMware hosts/SAN storage with the Starwind HCA's and have since converted numerous physical servers to VM's. We've been smoothly running about 50 VM's on our HCA's ever since then. Over the past 3 years, there were two instances where Starwind proactively notified me of an issue with our cluster and effortlessly guided me through the process of correcting the issues, with zero downtime to any of our VM's. Their onboarding was fantastic as well, they did a majority of the setup work, and provided as much help and guidance as I needed. I would absolutely recommend Starwind HCA's (or their VSAN software) to anyone! **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** I honestly don't have anything in particular to complain about. Nothing is perfect, but the only issues we had were promptly identified and resolved with minimal effort on my part, and were caught early and did not cause downtime. We've basically had almost 3 years of smooth sailing and 100% uptime. The performance and redundancy of the entire system, practically plug-n-play, is better than expected. I chose the performance tier hardware option due to our specific needs. The 24/7 support and their responsiveness is great as well. **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** Nothing much to dislike. If I had to be nit-picky, it would be that each host has to give up 24GB of RAM due to a proprietary vSAN StarWind VM that must run on each host. I didn't account for that when sizing up the resources. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** Performance and redundancy are the primary problems that the StarWind HyperConverged system solves for me. I have a few physical servers that I have been hesitant to virtualize due to the aging and performance-challenged virtual infrastructure. However, the StarWind HCA allowed me to virtualize those servers and have peace of mind due to the hardware redundancy and backups I have set up for the virtualized environment. Haven't had any hardware issues and the software has been solid. The real highlight is the support though. From the initial purchasing process, to the setup and configuration, to firmware updates and maintenance - the support is always top notch. **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** I have no major complaints. The StarWind Command Center (web portal) is a bit slow and clunky for me so I usually manage things from the node OS, but that's a minor nitpick since I don't have to use it. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm the sole jack-of-all trades IT guy at a 50-person company and I knew we needed to virtualize our servers and get them onto a HA cluster - but I've only dabbled with such things in my homelab and wasn't comfortable setting up and managing a production HA cluster on my own. I also didn't have much of a budget to work with. StarWind proved to be an excellent fit for us, they provide the hardware and setup the hypervisors so I can focus on the server VMs, network, and everything else. It allowed us to upgrade our IT infrastructure significantly, on a budget, and over the past 3 years has proven to be a very reliable platform. ### 24. It's easy to calculate your true needs for your environment and you will get an offer, that is designed for your scenario. Everything is well documented on their wiki pages, as an example, you can browse through every compatible NIC and OS and adjust if needed. You can expand your storage at any time and have zero downtime. Overall we would say that the performance, useability and flexibility are what we like most. **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** There is not something that we dislike about their HCA systems. Perhaps a minor complaint would be the limitation of the maximum PCI-e slots on the mainboards and some confusing configurations you have to make on VMWare ESXI on previous versions, but it is a minor complaint. **Recommendations to others considering StarWind HyperConverged Appliance:** Contact them for your personal suited trial period, they offer a basic 30-day trial on their website. But if you contact them and ask for an individual trial period, they will likely grant it to you. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** The main problem we solved was the use of a Hypervisor and Storage on the same server. The resulting performance and reliability have the most value for us. You don't have to worry about compatibility and latency between your servers and storage systems. It is simply the same, server and storage, at once. For each node, you will use loopback connections for the storage part on the own server and additional NIC connections to the other nodes, which still perform way better than our previous SAS or ISCSI storage. ### 25. StarWind's Virtual SAN software replicates storage in the background, letting each node in the cluster use its own local storage instead of having to create an actual storage network. The ease between setting up the HCA appliances and my previous setup is significant, as is ongoing maintenance. StarWind also offers ProActive Support that remotely monitors the appliances and automatically opens a ticket and initiates contact when a problem is discovered. As the only IT employee here, it's been pretty swish. It did not hurt that the price for the hardware and 3 years of support cost less than the disparate hardware the cluster used to run on. **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** CSVs require the storage be configured through iSCSI, even though the storage is local. It imparts a small performance hit that's easily overshadowed by the performance increase from getting off 1GB ethernet. The Virtual SAN setup also requires more actual storage than a traditional SAN. My two-node cluster means I need double the amount of physical storage before any RAID is taken into account. A two-node cluster with RAID 1 means 1/4 of the storage you purchase is available. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm a lone IT employee, so administering the server/network/storage appliances on my Hyper-V Failover Cluster was sometimes onerous. Customer account lookups sometimes took up to 7 seconds for our front office. Now they take 1-2 seconds. Even with the scope of the project changing way too often and constant delays; StarWind was a dream to work with. Once we finally settled on the hardware and got it installed, StarWind support took over and got everything working. Fit right into our environment and we were up and running and moving VMs in a few hours. Moved from a random gathering of Hyper-V servers of various ages to a 3-node cluster THAT JUST WORKS. I can imagine this would be a nice solution for similar situations to ours - hardware refresh with additional redundancy. We have ~100 VMs using ~480GB RAM and 50TB. These are VMs with similar CPU needs, so it worked out well. If there are one-off VMs with higher CPU needs, I would look at maybe a separate cluster. Trying to do too much would have been much more expensive. We had one issue with a drive that went bad. StarWind informed us before we knew. Few emails later and a tech was scheduled, few days later everything was replaced. Was a painless process. We have done maintenance in the middle of the day - Windows and Dell updates. No impact to production - users had no idea. This is all built on proven Windows Server technology. We did use their services for the initial set up. Cannot fault the product. **What do you dislike about StarWind HyperConverged Appliance?** I find it a little bit difficult to manage resource allocation and consumption of disk space, a front end or some reporting to show usage would be good. Some sort of partition tool for management would be good. **Recommendations to others considering StarWind HyperConverged Appliance:** Support is perfect, they are happy to provide any help needed to get things right. **What problems is StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed a solution that isredundant, easily managed, well supported and scaleable to host our development, test and UAT environments internally.
