  ### 4. Solus: A polished and intuitive Linux distribution

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zeeshan K. | User Support Specialist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2023

**What do you like best about Solus?**

Some of the things I appreciate about Solus include:

Its custom desktop environment is called Budgie, which is designed to be sleek, intuitive and easy to use.
The rolling release model, which allows users to always have the latest updates and software versions without the need for a full re-installation.
The eopkg package management system, which is easy to use and efficient.
The focus on providing a polished and seamless user experience, with attention to detail in every aspect of the operating system.
The community of developers and users who are passionate about the project and work to make it better.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

As with any operating system, Solus has some limitations and potential drawbacks that users should be aware of. Some of the cons of Solus include:

A smaller user base and software repository compared to more popular Linux distributions, which may result in fewer software options or less support for certain hardware.
It may not be as well-suited to advanced users or those with specific needs, as the operating system is tailored towards a more mainstream audience.
Some users may experience issues with hardware compatibility, particularly with newer or less common hardware.
As it is a rolling release distribution, there is a risk of running into bugs or compatibility issues with new updates.
Some users may find the Budgie desktop environment to be too simple or lacking in customization options.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of the main problems Solus is solving is the lack of a cohesive and polished user experience that can be found in other Linux distributions. Solus has a focus on providing a seamless and intuitive experience for users, with attention to detail in every aspect of the operating system. The custom-built Budgie desktop environment is designed to be sleek, intuitive, and easy to use, and the eopkg package management system is efficient and easy to use.

  ### 5. Fast Operating System

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aviral B. | Web Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 27, 2022

**What do you like best about Solus?**

1. It is one of the fastest OS I have ever used till now.
2. Perfect OS for beginners.
3. It is very simple but can be personalized by power users.
4. It is even better than Ubuntu if it comes to speed.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

The only thing I dislike about it is the manual installation of specific programs that are not available on it. It is a little annoying for me otherwise everything is great.

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

If someone is interested in Linux OS. I think Solus is a perfect choice.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1. It is the perfect OS for people who just want to use Linux as their operating system.
2. Users can experience an unique experience of the latest desktop because of the budgie desktop.

  ### 6. A clean, slick and independent Linux distribution of its own

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Damindu W. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Solus?**

Solus desktop environment called Budgie, is fast and good looking user interface and it's really easy to use. Windows and Mac users probably going to feel it more familiar because of their adapted UI design. Also it has a Windows-like applications pinning option and also the notifications panel on the right. Solus is made based on its own distro and they haven't taken any other Linux distro as reference. This makes Solus pretty unique and interesting to work with because nowadays, there's not many Linux distribution written from the scratch.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

Since Solus was developed from the scratch, the repositories for software and tools are very low compared to Ubuntu and Arch Linux distros but if you look around other 3rd party repositories, you’ll be able to find everything you need.

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

I installed Solus on my laptop as my daily driver. I had no issues with the speed whatsoever. Everything was so smooth and worked exactly as I expected. I think Solus 4.3 would be a slick and more stable release than other versions they have released before.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Solus feels more familier to me since its UIs are based on Windows and Mac OS. Because of that, it's more user friendly than any other distros out there. If you love Linux and looking for a stable and user friendly OS, I think Solus is the best solution we have at the moment.

  ### 7. Useful and powerful server management tool.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alejandro S. | Head of Customer Care, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 07, 2021

**What do you like best about Solus?**

Solus is generally fast and reliable; in addition, it has many options and features to handle your servers.
The good things are that, although it has many different options and buttons, once you get the flow, it's practical and straightforward to use.
Upgrading a VPS is easy, the same as reconfiguring the network or reinstalling.
Connectivity with WHMCS is excellent.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

Sometimes it tends to be slow; actions you do won't take effect in some cases.
Upgrading disk in Windows fails from time to time.
Managing VPS in bulk/mass is not easy as I understand it's not intended; we are a large provider, and we feel this.

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

It's a great solution for VPS and Webhosting companies. Same as VPN providers.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Well, it's not that much about problem-solving. It's a tool that helps us mainly to: manage our servers in real-time, upgrade their resources, change their IPs, migrate them, handle our nodes and configure them.

  ### 11. An Alternative to Ubuntu in 2021

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** fred h. | system administrator , Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 21, 2021

**What do you like best about Solus?**

If you are looking for a fresher Budgie desktop without the issues you can find in Gnome or Plasma then Solus is an option in 2021. The UI is streamlined and almost material based in the design. Also, the speed and consistency of the operating system is one of the best things going for the Solus team at this time.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

If you do not know how to package apps then the app selection is few. You can use Electron apps as a subsutitue but Solus is not for someone unfamilar with Linux.

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

If you are new to linux get familar with the different package managers and disstros before diving into Solus. The platform is not Debian based do if yo uare coming from Windows the learning curve can take a little time.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use my Solus desktop for Wordpress production and using XAMPP on the platform. Is more seamless and without issues than other Linux platforms in my opinion.

  ### 12. A very user friendly, beautiful, linux OS that's ready to go out of the box.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 18, 2021

**What do you like best about Solus?**

The best part about Solus is how well-designed things are. It is clear that the developers put a lot of effort into making it a pleasant user experience.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

Occasionally when you run into an issue it can be hard to track down a solution. This is mostly because the Solus community is relatively small and there aren't a lot of questions and answers about it on stack overflow. However, the community is often responsive if you do take the time to write up an excellent description of your problem and the things that you've already tried. That being said, most of the issues I faced where due to user error.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm using it as the main operating system on my laptop. It has made life pretty easy and helped me avoid worrying about configuring my system.

  ### 13. Used for Developers

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

It has less functionality. there are other operating systems which could offer better hardware support like ubuntu.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

solus has solved problems with recent proton builds

  ### 14. luxurious desktop with modern technologies

  ### 15. Fine, but underwhelming

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 14, 2020

**What do you like best about Solus?**

The Budgie desktop looks great and is fast, and it's cool that it was made from scratch and not based on a mainstream distro.

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

Overall, it was boring. Nothing made me go "wow, THIS is why I wanna use Solus!" That, and the relative lack of software available for install that didn't require me to build programs myself and hope for the best.

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

Give it a shot, you may like it. My opinion is purely based on personal preference and not anything wrong with Solus itself.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helped me figure out what I do and don't like/need in a desktop environment and distro.

  ### 16. ONe of the best Linus distros, but not for everyone

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 16, 2019

**What do you like best about Solus?**

- It's rolling release, so you always have newest software
- It's fast
- The developers are very transparent and explain all the changes they do
- Easy to use for people who just start their Linux experience
- Package manager is fast

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

- The package manager is self built so no other packages can be installed (no deb, rpm etc)
- It's missing some packages/applications in the software center and it can be really annoying
- Due to Solus being a niche distribution it's sometimes hard to find solutions for particular problems

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

If you are someone that has zero experience with Linux it's an interesting distribution for start, as you don't have any Debian/Ubuntu habits. Its fast and gives a really nice desktop experience.
However if you are an experienced Linux user you may have some problems. You can't use old good apt-get or dpkg any more. You can't use netstat (sic!) because they decided that it's not needed for desktop users etc.

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using it on my personal laptop and I am using it for every task I do (including programming, photo edition, browsing internet etc)

  ### 17. Waaay better than windows!!!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 06, 2018

**What do you like best about Solus?**

I love how fast this OS is, there is literally nothing like it, and it’s even better than Ubuntu

**What do you dislike about Solus?**

When it starts up it has a couple of error messages that I don’t understand

**Recommendations to others considering Solus:**

If you know Linux, use it

**What problems is Solus solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I’ve been able to use it to write Lennox functions, and compose our design
