If it were a little more checklist oriented for new users, it would be easier to understand how to get started with SimpleDB. **Recommendations to others considering SimpleDB:** As a small business owner that is so much coming at us, we are often band width constricted. Amazon is an amazing partner and we really are so happy we selected you! The only thing we really need is a little more hand holding. A get started checklist for onboarding to simplify the setting up process. This Amazon service is also quite secure so we can use sensitive information. Compared to other database services in the cloud, this is a very competitive price. It is also a very easy to use service, optimized for performance. The secret of the high availability of the database is based on the garcia of the several replicas distributed gerographically. **What do you dislike about SimpleDB?** There are no big points to criticize negatively also for still using the service in relatively little time. I just think they should provide more features to test though for a limited time for the customer to be able to set up a functional database and thus verify that switching to this service would make their service faster. With a limit of 1Gb and 25 hours it is not possible to test causing many potential users not to ponder this service. **Recommendations to others considering SimpleDB:** Try to set up a small test when you are testing SimpleDB as there are relatively low limits. If your current problem is the speed of availability of your database, SimpleDB is the solution for you. We already were utilizing AWS, so the choice to utilize Simple DB went through our ARB quickly as the recommended solution. What I've found most appealing from my standpoint is the reduced risk and maintenance for the solution. Without worrying about complex maintenanace, and simplified querying of the DB, the team is able to focus on more pertinent and demanding tasks. **What do you dislike about SimpleDB?** Based off of the feedback from the team, i've had no issues with Simple DB. The data is indexed automatically, which facilitates and speeds up the search for information. It is not necessary to predefine or change schemas if data is added later. And the extension is very simple: just create new domains instead of developing new servers. **What do you dislike about SimpleDB?** There is nothing that you do not like. It is very easy to use and very efficient. Not only that, the most amazing thing is that new and existing customers receive 25 hours of SimpleDB machine and 1 GB of free storage every month. **Recommendations to others considering SimpleDB:** I love! There is nothing to improve because the truth is in the right direction. **What problems is SimpleDB solving and how is that benefiting you?** One of the main technical benefits that I obtained from Amazon SimpleDB is the automatic replication and redundant geographically, something that no other software provides me. Each time a data element is stored, several replicas are created in different data centers of the selected region. In the unlikely event that the data center runs out of power, this guarantees the availability and durability of the data. The security of that data is vital for many applications, while the security of the underlying web services account should be important to everyone. To protect data integrity, access to SimpleDB, no matter what type, is protected by account credentials. I love that every key is indexed so it was easy to construct very complex queries even in a highly-scalable environment. **What do you dislike about SimpleDB?** Did you know there are limits to the number of records you can have? I didn't. I also didn't know there was a limit to how much data you could have on one record, or the number of keys you could have on one record. Now that DynamoDB is out and really in it's prime, there is *no reason to still use SDB*. Just don't use it anymore. Basically just name a data store then write key/value pairs to it. **What do you dislike about SimpleDB?** Most of the things I would describe as dislikes are simply a mis-application of the Simple DB. No transactions, no joins (at least not in the SQL sense of the word.) Trying to get complicated data structures to remain consistent within Simple DB can raise more complexity than it is worth resolving. Storing the data and managing is as simple as such using a webservice. Also it is non relational so there are constraints in maintaining for different kinds of data. I was using this database as a combination of AWS, EC2, S3. Setting this database was as difficult and confusing as any other AWS instances. There are different country regions and to choose where the database would be and then create domains, data, attributes etc etc. But this is also an advantage as it writes to multiple zones and durable. Similar to AWS access management can be configured at user level and for domains. It can be best used when use cases are on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. Like maintaining S3 metadata on simple db. The pricing is like pay for what you use so that should be OK if it meets your requirements. Though amazon dynamo db is getting popular like very other database simple db has its own characteristics to be considered for! **What do you dislike about SimpleDB?** The main issue with this database is doing any algebraic operations or running date functions on columns or aggregations etc. Also pricing. For most of the use cases we can use other famous databases like HBase especially when you have set up Hadoop cluster and running Map Reduce jobs. Indexes wise simple DB looks better. It automatically indexes all data. **Recommendations to others considering SimpleDB:** So if you are just looking for storing a small sized non relational or unstructured data and you do not do any major database operations then SimpleDB is for you!
