  ### 4. Good Open Source Tool for Data Science

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tanishq G. | Data Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 29, 2022

**What do you like best about Scilab?**

It's open-source, yet so powerful and got large community support online, it's easy to find answers to your problem. Anyone can install it, unlike MATLAB which is paid. Its programming is similar to MATLAB making it easy to switch to open source. Even its size is a lot smaller than MATLAB, so if you use MATLAB for computational purposes (no Simulink) we can switch to it and do a lot of great stuff.

**What do you dislike about Scilab?**

Its interface is too bland although I don't dislike it now, in starting it just makes things boring, its color and everything is just so simple. It doesn't have autocomplete feature, which is quite helpful when you start learning something new. They can also add new themes to colorize the editor, which is also missing currently.

**What problems is Scilab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have made many models with Scilab, which gave me quite useful insights, its graphing is what I used most and still use. Graphs help me understand things more practically and thus make learning and developing fun, interesting and understandable. I also used it a lot in my college. I use it more often than MATLAB due to its fewer RAM and ROM requirements.

  ### 5. Great software to solve & evaluate complex mathematical & engineering problems

**Reviewed Date:** March 12, 2021

**What do you like best about Scilab?**

I use 1st time Scilab in my under graduation, when we pursue graduation in physics we have encounter a lots of differential equations (likes Harmonics oscillator , Forced Oscillator, wave equations) without plotting graph of these we can never understand what is going on the system, how the system behaves with time. The best thing about the Scilab it is provide X-Cos simulations features here we can provides various input to the block and see the how the function behaves.

**What do you dislike about Scilab?**

when we define some functions sometimes show error, I think scilab help sections not very proper but you can take help by community. Scilab help section should be better and easily understandable.

**Recommendations to others considering Scilab:**

I'm not any employee of the any company. I'm just a grad student if you are student or employee you can learn scilab programming very easily. Lots of resources available online.

**What problems is Scilab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Most of the time I solved differential equations likes oscillating circuit (LCR, LC circuits) it very difficult to analyze equation of motion which is the form of differential equation, So in Scilab we can plot the graph and see how the function behaves with time. In mathematics and physics we encountered various polynomial function like ( Legendre & Laguerre Polynomial) which is very difficult to drawing to after 5 order but I draw very easily by Scilab by just defining function.
