We run one of the top 1,000 websites in the world and paid over $100k over two years for Piwik PRO’s enterprise analytics suite. Two years with Piwik taught us one thing: they’re attentive when they want your money and absent when you need their help. When bot/AI traffic began corrupting our dataset and inflating actions beyond our tier, support acknowledged bot volume but largely pushed responsibility back on us (docs, segment it out, mitigate at CDN/WAF). Meanwhile, the commercial response was to treat those inflated numbers as grounds for tier upgrades and additional invoices. Piwik PRO was acquired a few years ago, and it shows. It’s the classic post-acquisition SaaS slide: over our two-year term, account continuity eroded, handoffs multiplied, and responsiveness got worse—while the company’s energy shifted toward bundling, packaging, and upsells. The product suite includes separate products, which are really great products on their own.

Close to no free tag manager products currently exist, but this product suite has it own tag manager includes, and quite a nice one at that.

The analytics product serves as a nice all-round web analytics foundation, which would probably fit nicely with most companies needs.

The entire suite of products are getting regular updates, and is therefore growing into a more and more feature rich and stable selection of products in its own right.

I would recommend any small and medium size European company to have a look at Piwik PRO, if they are looking for an alternative to Google Analytics, which originates from Europe, but also adheres to European privacy and compliance laws like GDPR.

To me, way too much effort has been used to include features like in Google Analytics (Universal Analytics).

I took a look at the many options, did some actual testing, and chose Piwik Pro because:

1. Looks and works a lot like GA3/Universal Analytics. Perhaps more importantly, its numbers were consistently with +/- 5% of GA3.

2. Has its own tag manager but can also work through GTM.

3. Built in consent manager if you need it.

4. Free up to 500,000 hits/events per month.

5. The real-time tracker/debugger makes it easy to troubleshoot issues and verify tag changes.

While Piwik PRO covers most essential analytics needs very well, the range of third-party integrations is still somewhat limited compared to giants like Google. Advanced reporting (like cohort analysis or custom attribution modeling) can sometimes feel less flexible without additional configuration. I like many aspects of Piwik PRO, such as its powerful data analysis capabilities, high privacy protection, and convenient user experience. It can obtain more than 70% of the data through traditional methods, and the accuracy of this data is very high. By collecting and anonymously processing session-level data, I can gain deep insights into user behavior details on advertising pages. Piwik PRO provides multifaceted assistance in advertising effectiveness evaluation, such as precise data tracking and analysis, real-time reporting and insights, allowing for a clear understanding of the effectiveness of different marketing channels, thereby enabling reasonable budget allocation. The pricing of Piwik PRO is relatively high, especially for small advertising agencies or startups with limited budgets, which creates significant cost pressure. Currently, Piwik PRO is my favourite tool for web analytics to replace Google Analytics. It is easy to use and understand, marketers don't necessarily need analysts' help for everything.
