Overleaf Pricing FAQs

Generated using AI
Is Overleaf free, or does it offer a free trial?

No. According to G2 data, Overleaf does not offer a free plan or free trial. Users need to purchase a paid plan to access the product. Visit the seller's official pricing page for current pricing details and plan options.

Who is Overleaf pricing best suited for?

Overleaf's pricing is best suited for academic researchers, graduate students, and higher education institutions, which represent the dominant segments across G2 reviews. Small-business and mid-market reviewers in research, higher education, and education management extract strong value from the free tier for individual and small-team LaTeX document creation. Enterprise users at large research institutions and universities gravitate toward Overleaf's paid plans for multi-author collaboration with track changes and version control. G2 reviewers in computer software and information technology also adopt Overleaf for technical documentation and IEEE-format papers. Individual students and solo researchers find the free tier fully adequate, while co-authoring teams publishing peer-reviewed work benefit most from paid access.

What are the key differences between the free and paid versions of Overleaf?

Overleaf's free plan restricts collaboration to two simultaneous editors, limits version history access, and excludes integrations with GitHub and Dropbox. According to G2 reviewers, these are the most frequently cited upgrade drivers. Overleaf's paid plans unlock full version history, track changes functionality, Dropbox two-way sync, GitHub integration, and expanded collaborator limits. G2 users in research and higher education specifically call out track changes and Dropbox sync as game-changing paid features. Compile time limits and session timeouts on large documents with high-resolution images also push free-tier users toward paid plans, as G2 reviews of Overleaf note compile failures prompting upgrade prompts.

Is Overleaf considered good value for its pricing?

G2 reviewers broadly consider Overleaf good value, particularly given its free tier's capabilities. The 4.0–5.0 ratings dominating the review set reflect strong satisfaction. Multiple G2 users highlight that the free version alone handles cloud-based LaTeX editing, real-time collaboration, templates, and automatic saving without cost. However, G2 reviews of Overleaf consistently flag the paid tier as expensive relative to open-source local alternatives like TeXMaker, with one enterprise reviewer noting the premium is essentially for online saving and collaboration, similar to Dropbox but pricier. Students and academics on tight budgets find the free tier sufficient; power users needing GitHub sync, Dropbox integration, and full version history face a value trade-off.

"Great for Beginners, Improvable in Error Details"

What do you like best about Overleaf?

I like that Overleaf splits the screen to view the compilation and I can copy projects or use files from one project to another. It's my first time using LaTeX, so I find it useful that it marks errors, suggests commands, and allows me to see half of the screen with the compiler and the other half with the code. I also value the simplicity of its initial setup. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Overleaf?

The way Overleaf marks errors is unclear, and the solution suggestions are insufficient. I would like it to give more specific responses about the type of error or indicate when an error causes the entire compilation to fail. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
