In 10g/11g, the limitations of Express Edition were quite harsh, but thankfully since v18c, the XE limits have been raised and allow much more room for manoeuvre. Unstructured, Non-SQL data can't be indexed or stored in it. However, for structured data it's a must to have.

In older versions we don't have expdp and some grid environment so I don't think the versions are advantage now we have hot backups and rman which we can do backups with out doing the db down. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
