Who is OpenVPN Access Server pricing best suited for?

OpenVPN Access Server's pricing is best suited for small to mid-market businesses that need reliable, self-hosted secure remote access without the overhead of enterprise VPN appliances. G2 reviewers from IT services, consulting, financial services, manufacturing, and healthcare segments consistently highlight its balance of affordability and functionality for teams of 10 to a few hundred users. The free tier works well for startups or developers evaluating the solution, while the Growth plan suits growing teams needing LDAP, SAML, and MFA integration. G2 reviews suggest enterprises with very large concurrent user counts may find the per-connection licensing model less cost-efficient at scale.

What are the key differences between the free and paid versions of OpenVPN Access Server?

OpenVPN Access Server's free tier supports up to two concurrent connections and includes core features such as the self-hosted server, cluster configuration, and administration portals, making it suitable for very small teams or evaluation purposes. OpenVPN Access Server's Growth plan, starting at $7.00 per month, unlocks support for more than two connections and adds enterprise-grade capabilities including SAML, LDAP, RADIUS, MFA, PAM, custom authentication, third-party plugins, access controls, and site-to-site connectivity. G2 reviewers note the free tier is genuinely useful for testing, but the jump to paid becomes necessary quickly once teams exceed two users, with some reviewers wishing for an intermediate pricing tier.

Is OpenVPN Access Server considered good value for its pricing?

G2 reviewers of OpenVPN Access Server broadly consider it good value, particularly for small to mid-market businesses. The majority of reviewers give high ratings despite recurring cost concerns, suggesting the reliability, ease of use, and security features justify the price for most. G2 users frequently praise its cost-effectiveness compared to alternatives like Cisco, with one reviewer noting OpenVPN Access Server's costs and maintenance are far lower than Cisco. However, multiple G2 reviewers flag that OpenVPN Access Server's pricing has increased in recent years, and the concurrent-connection licensing model can become expensive as teams scale, making it less compelling for larger deployments or budget-sensitive small businesses.

What do you like best about OpenVPN Access Server?

I like that OpenVPN Access Server is simple to set up and simple to use, making its simplicity the best part. I appreciate being able to set up groups and control their access to different places, which is key for me. It also integrates well with our Microsoft products, and the SAML authentication with profile locked configuration is super nice. Setting it up was super easy, just requiring an Ubuntu machine and some basic steps before installation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenVPN Access Server?

I guess if it had a little bit smaller price for self hosted version, maybe it could be even more appealing to a larger crowd. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
