Liferay 7.4 has completely changed how we balance “quick wins” with “complex builds.” On one side, the low-code empowerment through Liferay Objects has been genuinely liberating. I can now create custom data models and connect them to workflows and forms without a single deployment or needing a backend developer. It’s turned what used to be an IT backlog into something much closer to a self-service reality. On the other side, when we do need to write code, Client Extensions have addressed the “upgrade dread” we used to feel with OSGi modules. Since they run out of process and communicate through APIs, our developers can work in React or Vue without having to be Liferay Java experts. While the platform is extremely powerful, the initial learning curve can be steep. Moving from traditional portlet development to the newer Client Extension model takes a real shift in mindset, and that adjustment can slow a team down during the first few sprints of adoption. With the fast pace of the Quarterly Release cycle, I sometimes notice that the official documentation trails the newest features by a bit. As a result, it can take some trial and error—or even a support ticket—to fully grasp the nuances of a brand-new 7.4 capability. The administrative interface is also very feature-rich, which I appreciate, but it can feel a little UI-heavy. Having to click through deeply nested menus to locate specific configuration options for Objects or System Settings can be tedious until you’ve memorized where everything lives. What I like best about Liferay is how flexible it is also it doesn’t force me into a single way of building things. ex: - Headless APIs (GraphQL / REST): I rely on this a lot. It lets me fully control the frontend and work with modern design systems instead of being tied to Liferay’s UI. - Structured content & dynamic pages: Once it’s set up properly, I don’t need to hardcode pages anymore. Content becomes reusable, and business users can manage it without coming back to dev. - Built-in enterprise features: Things like roles, permissions, workflows, and staging are already there, which saves a lot of time and avoids reinventing the wheel. Integration-friendly: It fits nicely in complex environments (SSO, APIs, backend systems) so I can use it as a central layer instead of building everything from scratch. We are a Liferay partner and have helped many customers implement various external and internal facing portals and websites. As an example, we worked with a top 10 public university in the USA to launch a new Digital Donor Experience. Prior to the new Digital Donor Experience launch, the University’s Online donor experience did not meet expectations for donors, prospects, alumni, or staff. Content was spread over three sites, was difficult to navigate, and did not offer any personalization. Site and content management was also not intuitive for the website management team. The University was looking to provide a personalized, dynamic, digital experience for prospects, donors, and alumni throughout their engagement with the University. I use Liferay Digital Experience Platform for content management and building site pages quickly and easily. I like how it allows me to build and publish content based on the workflow process. The analytics provided are helpful for understanding content performance. I appreciate Liferay's admin control with no code and low code options, making it easy to manage the platform without coding experience. Liferay Commerce makes it easy to build commerce sites. The platform provides good support and a wide range of features for a production-ready site. The initial setup was very easy, just needed to download the bundle and use the activation key.
