The initial setup was moderately easy, but configuring the environment, dependencies, and custom features required some technical knowledge and could take significant time. I’d like more beginner-friendly tutorials, step-by-step setup guides, practical code examples, simpler configuration, clearer navigation, more intuitive settings, and better error messages and troubleshooting guides. I like Liferay Digital Experience Platform’s CMS, especially Fragments and Display Page templates, which make the frontend easy and clear. I can create fragments on the global site and reuse them across all our sites, and one Display Page template manages our articles using the article structure fields. It also makes user and role management easier and lets us handle multiple sites on one server. Compared with WordPress, managing content and the UI is easy and fast. We are moving from OSGI to the client extension, but while using CS we sometimes miss what we had with OSGI. We are using Spring microservices, and many things that were readily available and easy to use in OSGI now require a lot of configuration in the microservice setup. At times, it makes us feel that OSGI was the better option. Our main concern is the data-fetching process in the microservice. The headless API approach, as we have objects we get headless APIs, once you get them you can use anywhere in front end no matter which frontend technology it is e.g., React, Angular, Next, or any Mobile App. Also, the Liferay localization feature, for our client we built 7 Indian languages and it works seamlessly. Too many upgrades, like if you have upgraded your Liferay from 7.3 to 7.4 2024, you become used to CMS 1.0 which has dynamic and manual selection for assets. As Liferay doesn't provide a CMS 1 to CMS 2 migration tool, it becomes too difficult when you have 13 sites running and each site has tons of web content. We have worked only on Liferay for over 15 years, from version 6.0 to the latest 2026 LTS. What I like best is that it does many jobs in one platform. Portals, websites, intranets, customer self-service, and document management all run on the same base. Clients don’t need to stitch together five different tools.

It is also very flexible. We can start with what comes out of the box, then build custom features when a client needs them. It handles large, complex projects well. We have delivered for government bodies, telecom companies, and global organizations, and it scales with them.

Security, user permissions, and multi-language support are strong. This matters a lot for our clients in the Middle East and the public sector.

Honestly, there is very little I dislike. The main challenge is the learning curve. Liferay can do a lot, so new developers need time to learn it well. Finding skilled Liferay talent in the market is not always easy.

Upgrading from older versions can also take effort, especially when there is a lot of custom code. Liferay has made this much better in recent releases, but older projects still need careful planning.

Some advanced topics could use more detailed documentation and examples. That said, the community and Liferay’s support team usually fill these gaps quickly.
