Thankfully, IIS has almost always been an easy-to-use and reliable web platform (well at least since IIS 6). Regardless of the size of your server environment or your role within IT, it is easy to configure IIS to your needs and learn how to use it. The new config editor makes it easy to update config settings without having to dig into web.config. I also appreciate the security updates and the improvements on FTP server management through IIS. Overall it is a small but solid upgrade. **What do you dislike about Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server?** The update over the previous version is fairly small. It is also not the most modern version of the tool and you will have to update to 2012R2 if using Windows 10. **Recommendations to others considering Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server:** Probably should be updating to IIS 8 at this point. For instance, some weeks ago I was trying to use LetsEncrypt to obtain a SSL certificate, and as I'm browsing the web looking for tutorials, I found that an IIS user developed an automated application that not only configures the server for you, but also renews the certificates before they expire. In production, IIS has always delivered great speeds and is able to serve hundreds of requests per second. **What do you dislike about Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server?** Sometimes IIS is associated with legacy applications and people believe that it underperforms compared to Apache or Ngnix, but in my opinion it is very robust and reliable. I don't have many complains about it. **Recommendations to others considering Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server:** Give it a shot; it might not be as popular as Ngnix or as liked by the linux community as Apache, but it is very robust and reliable! One suggestion though, is that its documentation on Microsoft's side is a little bit ambiguous, so be prepared to do third-party lookups when trying configurations. **What problems is Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** This is a web server, it literally runs the web apps I host on top of it. There is reason for this - IIS is tightly integrated with system but still I dislike it and want to be able to use latest IIS. **Recommendations to others considering Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server:** If you are on Windows all you need to do is to run Web Platform Installer, choose Recommended Configuration and press Install - it will take you five minutes to start using it, and you will like it. **What problems is Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** IIS is used to run main sites behind load balancer in a farm (cluster). Also separate installation is used to serve static content, after some tuning it behaves very good and I do not see any reason why should I move to something else like a nginx. ### 8. The configuration files are XML and fairly hidden. When things go wrong, it can be really hard to figure out what happened. **Recommendations to others considering Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server:** Make sure to read the documentation. **What problems is Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** Using IIS is sort of a given if you are a .NET shop. There are other options (such as mono and apache), but IIS is the only well-supported solution. We have used Chef to automate the IIS setup, with removes a large portion of the day to day pain of using it. ### 11. It has several features that I have grown to love that make my ASP.NET web apps perform really well. Features such as automatic management of ASP.NET hosts where it recycles my AppDomain during idle times and reclaims server resources so that I can save alot when server doesn't have alot of load. It also has several security features that limits requests to prevent prevalent DDDOS attacks. Last but not least in these time having systems that can be deployed to say a production environment without down time is very important and IIS has support for this out of the box, so those are just a few of the reasons why I have grown to love it. **What do you dislike about Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server?** The main drawback I could say I have is some customizations are a bit trivial since it's not open source. So everything has to go through Microsoft or be restricted to their constraints and that can be a bit annoying. It's manageable though and Microsoft has started open sourcing alot of their stack so who knows if in the future this will also be open source so as much customizations and extensions can be written. **What problems is Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm running several ASP.NET web apps on Windows Azure via IIS Server and I have mainly benefited from it being very robust and having tons of built in features that make it production ready for very large web applications. ### 12.
