What I like about the application is that it does indeed offer a very bare bones approach to writing on a computer. There is not a lot in the way of an interface, and that is actually one of it's shining features. I, like many others, decided to give this application a try because I was tired of the overly complicated menus in word processing programs. When I want to write something without any distractions, this is the application that I use because it is without a doubt one of the most minimal and simplistic writing applications that I have ever used. **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** I personally dislike the fact that you really need to learn the language of the software to be able to get all of the benefits of using it. For example, instead of clicking a button to have text become a heading, you might type something like "###" and the software would read it as a command to make the text a heading. This is good if you are willing to take the time to learn some of these different command options, but I think your average user looking for a simple experience would find this cumbersome as I do. I have noticed that there are light gray quick command options at the bottom for things such as headings, you can just click it to have the "###" inserted for you, however your text is not displayed as a header but rather with the code-like command beside of it. It almost reminds me of typing in a word processor built for coding or programing. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** Take the time to learn some of the commands and experience all that the program has to offer. I think they will continue to add features in the future that make the experience more streamlined, so I will personally be sticking with it. **What problems is iA Writer solving and how is that benefiting you?** When I need to simply focus on my writing and not have any distractions this application helps me to do so. ### 6. These really help me get into the zone and write. I think the different colors and font shift my mind into a "we're writing now" mode. Sometimes it's good to have something different than the standard white background when you want to create! Focus mode with typewriter adds an element of fun to my writing sessions. I get to watch the page scroll up like a typewriter would, and I really do feel more focused when I use that mode. I really like how simple iA Writer is. There aren't a bunch of flashy features or confusing toolbars. It's simply a program I can open and start writing. **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** One thing I don't like about iA Writer is that italics and bold words don't show up that way. For italics, you end up with *words I want to be italicized.* So when I go to edit a document later, I have to make adjustments for things like that. It takes a bit of extra time. I'd prefer if I could just copy and paste it into the next document with the italics and formatting already the way I want them. **What problems is iA Writer solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use iA Writer to help me focus more on writing when I go to do it. The lack of inspiration, the difficulty of publishing, or as in my case the difficulty to concentrate at the time of writing are just some of the factors that complicate the task of writing. That is why I love iA Writer, because this app helps me incredibly when it comes to focusing on what I am writing, this application is designed specifically for writers.Its goal is to concentrate on what you are writing, shape it, polishing it and developing your book. It has no buttons, so we just have to work on the keyboard. Of course, afterwards we can always add images, tables or whatever we want. The iA Writer Classic is missing some helpful features, like real-time preview, while the paid version is a bit expensive, given the often cheaper competition. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** There are a lot of plain text editors out there, and at this point most do an excellent job. Consider your full feature requirements before paying for one. **What problems is iA Writer solving and how is that benefiting you?** For static site blogging (for example, Jekyll or Hugo), iA Writer is a great tool for developing posts. Similarly, it's serviceable for writing or editing Readme files. The ability to sync with Dropbox and use it on iOS means it also works quite well for smaller notes. ### 15. This program is just so simple and easy to use. They've gotten rid of all the clutter that comes with most editors and kept it streamlined and simple. Perfect for focus! **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** A minor gripe is when you're scrolling through on an iPad, the title bar will appear and then disappear as you scroll up or down, this can get a bit janky and distracting at times but a minor thing at most. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** If you're looking to focus on your writing and writing only then iA Writer is for you, it is such a simple app, beautifully streamlined and yet it works well and quickly in the background. If you need to sync between multiple devices instantly - then again, this is a great fit. If you're looking for simplicity and ease of use - then again, this app is perfect for that. No complaints here! There are some great options for writing preferences such as "focus mode" which only shows the sentence you're writing and the surrounding few sentences. I've used it for so many things, daily to write down notes. A year ago I even wrote most of my graduation paper in IA Writer with markdown. Distraction-free writing is also great to totally immerse myself in the story I'm writing. **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** There's not much to dislike, IA Writer is the most simple tool you can think about. There is one single thing that needs fixed, but this could also be a markdown issue. When creating code blocks with backticks, the quotes inside the block are autocorrected to smart quotes. The dumb to smart quotes is great, but in code a smart quote causes errors when copying it back to a code editor. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** Awesome tool to write markdown, I recommend it to everyone searching for a great writing experience. **What problems is iA Writer solving and how is that benefiting you?** I dislike large and bloated tools like Word to write text, it just seems slow. You don't need to worry about font size, or colors, or alignment, or any other visual aspect you might think, you just have to focus in your writing. This software uses Markdown, a simple text markup, to create the necessary hierarchy and give the appropriate importance for certain words, using titles, bold and italic. It will also give you a preview, so you get the chance to peak how it's going to look. **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** The things I don't like about this software, is that you need to pay separate from Desktop and Mobile, and you won't get free major updates, for example from version 2 to version 3. But that's a business model like everything else. It makes sense to be this way, if you think how much effort and thinking it's put into it. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** If you like to write or take notes, and think that your current software distracts you from getting things done, you might consider giving iA Writer a shot. Writer comes with a pretty good font, but the change of the app from “Pro” to just iA Writer (different from the original) took away the notes mode that I liked a lot. **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** Writer changed from Pro (which had multiple document modes that were sort of useful) back to a simplified version with the syntax views intact. It doesn’t look as good as Ulysses and isn’t customizable. Document organization isn’t as good as Ulysses. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** Check out Ulysses. It does most of what Writer does (it lacks syntax views). Writer is solid, but Ulysses has many features and tools that Writer lacks, and can be customized to look exactly the way you want. Document organization is easier with Ulysses. Ulysses makes viewing long documents easier because you can color code the various headers and sections within a document. **What problems is iA Writer solving and how is that benefiting you?** Writer was my go-to app for copywriting and editing prior to switching to Ulysses. I still use it for some text documents that I get, but it just doesn’t do as good a job as Ulysses. Syntax works well. ### 21. The markdown support also works really well for my needs, and the cloud sync means that the files are always there, in the IA library, regardless of what machine I'm on. **What do you dislike about iA Writer?** I don't think I dislike any aspect of the app. It's important to note though that this isn't an editor you'd use for writing code, it's a plain text editor for writing prose. **Recommendations to others considering iA Writer:** Get the iOS version as well if you want sync across platforms **What problems is iA Writer solving and how is that benefiting you?** Great for writing short notes or longer pieces of text, you don't even have to remember to save, the files are named and saved for you without you having to lift a finger ### 22. Aside from it's Fountain support it is not very unique. Overall, it doesn't really have any standout features. Pages is a similar app that does many of the same thing, but it also does a lot more.
