The most flexible and easy to configure MTA we've ever used! **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Bradley S. | Head of Infrastructure, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** June 04, 2024 **What do you like best about Halon Protect?** The amazing Halon Scripting Language allows us to configure Halon to literally do anything we want. It's allowed us to create a custom MTA that has all but eliminated IP's being blacklisted, and increased deliverability for our customers by well over 1,000%! We had no issue replacing our old system with Halon, and currently it sends out 10s of millions of emails without any issues. **What do you dislike about Halon Protect?** There is a learning curve if you have no coding experience, however Halon themselves are happy to set up your configuration to your specifications. So it's only an issue if you plan on doing it all yourself. **What problems is Halon Protect solving and how is that benefiting you?** It allows us to send emails out without them being rejected due to poor spam reputation. We also have significantly less servers handling mail, and it does it so efficiently that we have no load issues. We literally have 1/4 of the mail servers we used to have without issues! The excellent centralised logging makes it much easier for our tech support to help track what happened to an email when a customer makes a request. ### 2. The support given is fast in reply and accurate. The support personel is the persons behind it and knows the product in and out. **What do you dislike about Halon Protect?** Right now I can not find any dislikes anbout Halon... **What problems is Halon Protect solving and how is that benefiting you?** Using addon posibility to let our customers login to a webinterface, we have narrowd down our own support towards our customers about mail and mailfiltering to almost zero. ### 3. But what probably matters more is the end result for us as an e-mail service provider. Halon Protect, simply put, does exactly what it was designed to do, it keeps unwanted e-mail traffic from your and your customers' inbox. **What do you dislike about Halon Protect?** I really can't think of anything negative to say about Halon. As strange as that sounds, we haven't run into anything that hasn't been resolved in a timely manner. **What problems is Halon Protect solving and how is that benefiting you?** Halon keeps junk from inboxes. Anyone who's ever managed e-mail infrastructure know what a difficult task that can be. Halon is also a very flexible solution that allows us to implement outside-the-box solutions for some of our clients with special needs. ### 4. Industry compliant but still flexible enough to create any number of paths to filter and monitor SMTP data. Simple deployments from single node to clusters to HA. Support is top notch, no question too simple or too silly, they come up with some creative answers to curly problems. **What do you dislike about Halon Protect?** There is a steep learning curve, but if you understand general SMTP mechanics then you will be just fine. **What problems is Halon Protect solving and how is that benefiting you?** Monitoring and filtering spam email with a unique set of controls we maintain in house. We can apply bespoke methods to dealing with SMTP traffic that most large commercial providers cannot. ### 5. The support staff is top-notch. We have the system configured as a high volume inbound and outbound SMTP server, configured in a cluster of nodes that span multiple countries. We use the service for anti-spam, anti-virus, and SMTP with user authentication against an API. Upgrades have been seamless, stability has been world-class and their approach to engineering is beyond reproach. We replaced 70 postfix servers with 7 Halon nodes and we could have probably done it with 4! **What do you dislike about Halon Protect?** Message queues are located on the machine that accepts the email. If there are hardware issues or if we need to drain messages from a specific node it takes time and a lot more tweaking than we would prefer. **Recommendations to others considering Halon Protect:** Conduct a POC and have the team do a test deploy in your environment. Compare it to your current MTA and give them a try.
