## CARTO Reviews
  ### 1. Most used tool in my geospatial stack

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Denise M. | Principal - Geospatial Services Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2025

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

My experience with CARTO has been overall positive, and the tools have been my top resource and the reason for much of my career success over the past year. Compared to my other go-to platform for online mapping, Esri, CARTO offers much faster visualization returns for my projects. The ease with which I can access my big-data warehouse has alleviated much of the headache that typically comes with data hosting. Additionally, re-engineering data to fit my use case is far quicker and easier on CARTO than doing the work on my desktop. I would also like to commend CARTO for providing high-quality training resources through YouTube, webinars, and CARTO Academy. My learning curve was minimal, with only a few hours needed to get up to speed.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

There isn't much I dislike about CARTO. They are constantly improving their platform and very open to feedback about their products and services.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Visualizing the massive amounts of location-based data for my company.

  ### 2. Intuitive Mapping Made Easy, But Advanced Features Need SQL Know-How

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 22, 2025

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

CARTO’s platform is extremely user-friendly and visually intuitive. I really like how easy it is to create, style, and share interactive maps without needing heavy GIS expertise. The visualization options are powerful, and the platform makes it simple to turn complex spatial data into actionable insights

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Some advanced customization features require SQL knowledge or workarounds. The platform can also be slow when handling very large datasets.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use CARTO primarily for pre-planning Out-of-Home (OOH) campaigns. It’s a valuable tool for visualizing and analyzing data spatially. I use it to show audience indexing, inventory indexing, and conduct proximity analysis. These insights help identify the most effective locations for media placements and ensure alignment with target audience behaviours and key points of interest.

  ### 3. A great way to communicate mapping information to clients

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** patrick b. | Director, Insights and Solutions, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2025

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The fact that you can send someone a link to a map you created and they are able to zoom and move around the map, anyway they want.

We can now target 15 to 20 households per postal code. When clients see that precision on a map, it really brings home the value of what we're doing"

“With CARTO, we transformed geospatial analytics from a technical bottleneck into a fast, intuitive workflow that makes targeting and performance obvious to our clients

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Not enough people have heard about it!!!

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It brings all of our data together to visualize it on a map

  ### 4. One Stop GeoSpatial Shop

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jenny J. | Director Of Operations, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2023

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Carto is intuitive, well programmed and constantly improved. Before I realize the need for a feature of functionality, there is an upgrade that evolves the quality of my work. The support staff is responsive and thoughtful, and I enables my company to level the field of competition with organizations having much larger budgets and dedicated staff. We have been with Carto for 5 years now, and look forward to utilizing our subscription in more areas of our business.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The user documentation can be hard to navigate, so we create more support tickets than self-serve. The response time from support is faster than locating on my own.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Making maps that distinguish our company above our competitors.

  ### 5. Great experience with a super reactive team!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Charlene M. | Programme Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

We would like to say a big thank you to the entire CARTO team for their efforts, dedication and availability for our mapping project. Working with a number of people involved on our side means a lot of comments, a lot of back and forth, etc. but CARTO team was always super reactive. We learnt how to work together, and like all new collaborations, it took some time to be aligned on a method that worked on both sides, but the result is successful!

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Receiving clear instructions and understanding expectations helped us better understand what worked best for CARTO so we could work accordingly. On the other side, understanding the role of each of the CARTO staff and meeting/involving all of them early on is a recommendation we would give, as well as making sure all staff have well understood the requests, considering English isn’t their first language. Overall a great experience and would recommend them!

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CARTO created an interactive mapping tool with numerous technicalities and was very good at listening and making sure the tool was aligned with our expectations.

  ### 6. Sports & Entertainment - Stadium Indoor Mapping

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Sports | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 07, 2022

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

- Visually enriched information through the raw data.
- Good service provided by the Carto team.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

- Some errors are sometimes displayed, probably derived from the data source.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- To cover a use case that offers a better live tracking scenario for a sport that usually does not enjoy as many options as others.

  ### 7. Great bespoke service capability

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ellen P. | Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 02, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

We had a custom mapping design developed and the CARTO team made this easier than I expected, with the end result produced in time and with continual communication between our management and the CARTO team. We were not able to implement everything we we wanted in the end, but through good communication and a clear plan the CARTO team were able to effectively deliver the vast majority of our requested depictions, and made changes we needed as development took place. Definitely the best bespoke IT development experience we have had thus far and with the large amount of data we use on a regular basis it is essential to have mapping that work with our data set in the way we want it go. The whole team doing the work for our bespoke requests are all very professional and we really have enjoyed watching our data become more effectively usable! Lucienne and Dani are both great and a pleasure to work with :)

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The billing department is not easy to deal with. There are discrepancies in how the billing is conducted and a disconnect between billing and those doing the marketing and negotiations. We have had issues trying to chase up feedback and issues with billing. The marketing team has been great about providing pricing considerations, which we really do appreciate, but when it's time for regular payments or there is discussion, the feedback loop from whomever the final decision maker is can be long and at times not logical. The marketing team needs to have more leeway to make decisions and work with the clients they get to know.
The directions for how to imbed, make and alter maps could be easier for users. Our analysts have to get a mini crash course in programming each time there is a change.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Make sure to have someone with a relatively sophisticated level of technical ability, and programming experience is a big bonus. The mapping is not a simple thing to implement, but if you can get it to work it looks good. That said, if you go for a bespoke product the CARTO team can assist and make it work for you as you want.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed good bespoke visualization for a significant amount of data and CARTO had suggestions to further enhance what we wanted to say in the data, in addition to just the basics of what we asked for. The method of depiction and integrating our information directly into the platform once the dashboard is completed will be a very valuable tool for our personnel to use the data and then present it in a visually effective way.

  ### 8. Drawing custom maps in your browser? Yes please.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brandon M. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 02, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

It was really important for our company to be able to manipulate geospatial data in an easy to use way. Carto Builder was exactly what we needed to be able to make small changes to our geometries, on the fly, from just about anywhere.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

We tried downloading information from a Carto table that included geometry data to add some columns to the data set. This wasn't something easily done in the Carto browser, so needing to export the data and do it on our end was necessary. For whatever reason, when trying to upload the newly manipulated data set, half the geometries would be corrupted and invalid. We ended up needing to figure out the right combination of SQL queries to add the missing columns from another set to the desired one and rename the table we were working with.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

If you need a way to easily visualize and manipulate geospatial data without industry expert knowledge of GIS systems and software, Carto would be an excellent option to explore. With some SQL query knowledge, the platform should be able to do everything to fit your needs.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using Carto to visualize police jurisdictional boundaries on our end and ensure that we have them correctly drawn. We care very much about respecting the jurisdictions of the police departments we aim to help. Being able to see and manipulate these boundaries in an easy way is huge for us as no one on our team is exactly a GIS expert.

  ### 9. Great tool!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Leonardo D. | Head of Data Science, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The extra data available and all the insights we can get visually in a simple way. I also love that you can use it as a python library, which really increases the flexibility. It is a real pleasure to use, I did not have a single episode where the application was stalled or not correct, which in my personal opinion is one of the most important aspects.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

I like almost everything, sometimes it could be a bit faster. I would like to see more on the data quality side, maybe some additional features that can check if the data is consistent and if not I would really appreciate some feedback. For example, it could say inconsistent columns If it detects some inconsistency in the data of a particular column.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

I would suggest try it out with a. simple map and some of the dataset they make available.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Spatial insights are not that easy to gather, especially using traditional dashboarding tools like MicroStrategy. Also gathering data is not the easiest thing, even if you are willing to buy it from vendors. Carto has been a great tool for that and I am sure most of my organization agrees with me. It also looks good, which is. great plus when you want to present information to more senior stakeholders and C-level management. Other tools, including MS, are not as good looking, and even if seems a shallow requirement it does play an important part in the decision of the tool to be used.

  ### 10. An excellent tool for both beginners and experts in Spatial Data Science

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Isabel F. | Data Scientist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 21, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Huge variety of tools, from friendly UI (builder), to python library (cartoframes), and also a pool of SDKs and APIs. I also value the extensive documentation and the quick response from CARTO support team.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Regarding the tool itself, I have nothing to point out, so far. The training sessions we had with the CARTO team were also very useful, although I would have started with the builder training first, and only afterwards the cartoframes and APIs sessions.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Spatially visualize the predictions of the machine learning models that in my team we are developing in our Data Science tool, as well as the most important features in those models.

  ### 11. Carto is my favorite web-based geospatial platform.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Management Consulting | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The additional libraries (Python, JS) that are available to augment the UI processing power. The data library is also very handy.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The UI usability could use some improvements and can be tough for a new user to understand.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

CARTO is great for an organization that doesn't have the resources to invest in more expensive enterprise GIS and is looking for smaller scale analysis and mapping.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Site selection for business, visualization of market demand.

  ### 12. Carto is a very powerful platform that can scale to virtually any data size.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chad M. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The flexibility of the APIs. We are able to make our map products as custom as we need them for our users. Our datasets vary in size and shape and being able to customize the way our users interact with our data makes more things possible. The people at Carto are great to work with and they are always there to help us with a problem or give us insight into making our tools better.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The frequency of change, especially with what is considered to be trendy and new. We are always excited about what is considered cutting edge and we have learned to explore new Carto tools or products with a slowed down adoption to ensure they will work the way we expect.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Get a trial and start with Builder to see how much faster Carto is compared to other platforms. Look at the API tutorials for your use cases and try out the javascript libraries to suit your needs. You will most likely find an example that is 80% of your objective.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are displaying large datasets in maps that perform better than anything else. We are tailoring our tools to fit our users needs in a way that is repeatable and simple. We are creating visualizations that would be difficult on other platforms. We have realized the benefit that that backend allows us to do, and we use that to make our maps and data perform as best as possible.

  ### 13. GREAT product for beginners & experts, confusing business model

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Greg A. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

CARTO will forever hold a special place in my heart as the product & platform that introduced me to geospatial analysis. Not only is CARTO a powerful tool for geospatial developers with technical skills, but it also works tremendously for beginners with zero experience who want to generate powerful, spatial insights

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

CARTO's business strategy doesn't seem to match their product strategy. In terms of their product strategy, CARTO seems to be investing the majority of their development efforts into features that make the product work for beginners (people without technical mapping/geospatial skills). However, while their product team continues to make the platform better and better for beginners, their pricing strategy seems to do the opposite. They've removed any pricing tier that could be remotely affordable to an individual, and have left only those pricing tiers that enterprises can afford.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use CARTO to generate ad hoc maps & spatial analyses that support various customer needs

  ### 14. Great mapping program

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Emma H. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 10, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The versatility is great. We are able to really customize our maps with various layers to meet our complex needs.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

I wish there were more display options including a tile grip map.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

CARTO is a great tool for users looking for a robust mapping tool.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are trying to show all the variables related to school closings amid coronavirus. A multi-layer map allows us to show not only the various nuances but also identify potential geographic trends.

  ### 15. Clean UI, easy data connections, beautiful graphics

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kelman C. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

I like the ability to connect to multiple data sources, from cloud databases, to local csv files. Getting data from different domains into a single map, such as demographic and internal datasets, to reveal geospatial insights that were not previously obvious to the team before. Carto can be used outside of the UI as well, such as in jupyter notebooks. I like how Carto allows non technical users to build, create and share their maps for viewing. I like how the data connections and maps can be configured to allow for auto-updating, this is a very helpful feature that reduces a lot of manual map updating, and is now automated.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Data can't be auto-detected, e.g. geo columns need to be titled explicitly. Load times can get a little slow and laggy at times, connecting to bigquery can be buggy too. It might be better if there was an option to load a sample of the data when working with big datasets, showing a preview for the sample when building the map out.
The map color spectrum can be smarter, it does not detect non numerical ordinal data (e.g. alphabetical), causing manual color selection from the palette.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Why wait? I don't see any other online web/cloud mapping platform that is as comprehensive and complete as Carto.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Multilayered geospatial problems. Being able to share map and geospatial analytics easily with a wide range of audiences that vary in terms of technical/domain expertise. We are solving a wide array of problems in the fields of logistics challenges, marketing reach, market share, competitor analysis, demographic targeting.

  ### 16. Incredible geospatial tool with an easy to use web interface!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tapan P. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

CARTO is an easy to use powerful tool, that helps us create maps in a matter of minutes without any custom code, it's all declarative. It has advanced analytical capabilities to help you facilitate different analysis within maps. You can also use SQL for more complex calculations. You can also easily share your maps with other internal/external users in a matter of seconds. Their account executive and technical support teams are incredibly agile and extremely resourceful and accommodating. We will be using it's advanced API geocoding features in the future beyond our current use cases.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

There is a bit of learning curve involved; however, this is typically the case with many different applications. If I could change one thing, it would be it's maximum layer limit per dataset.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use CARTO to plot our data on different maps for planning, forecasting, and collaborating with other stakeholders.

  ### 17. Great data visualization software

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Management Consulting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Within Builder, I like how Carto makes it easy to query data with its PostgreSQL backend, and it's very easy to visualize and style the results, making it very easy to create nice looking maps. I also use the SQL and Maps APIs and JavaScript libraries, which I find to work well and intuitively, with good documentation. The feature to create a unique API key that grants access to different datasets is very useful to me.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

I find that the query limits are somewhat prohibitive. Particularly for larger datasets, I've run into issues not being able to vacuum a table that is too large. For some larger polygon datasets, I am not able to use jenks classification without a timeout. While I can get around some query limits by batch processing, but still can take more time than needed. Additionally, I find the pricing jump from a non-commercial to commercial license to be very steep, and it has been hard to get a real estimate for this in pricing discussions that I've had.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My company uses Carto to host, maintain, and visualize our geospatial telecommunications and other infrastructure databases. Carto's features have streamlined our processes to develop and maintain these database. We combine this data with demand indicators such as population density, night light imagery, schools, hospitals, and other points of interest to assess where infrastructure is needed most, or where a business opportunity may be latent for our clients. Carto makes it easy to store, manage, and visualize this data to reveal patterns and insights.

  ### 18. Carto for consultancy projects

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

How easy it is to incorporate new layers of information from different file sources (csv, shp, xml, and others). Also, you can create maps that support the story telling of a project or a report really fast. The ability to create specialized analysis when needed helps with the usability and flexibility of the platform.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The integration of data and scheduled refresh needs to be more user friendly. At work we use different databases and files that need to be updated on daily or weekly basis. We have solved the automatic import making developmentes on our side and sending the informations via the APIs available. It is not a big issue since the type of developer/user that interacts with Carto know how to solve this but some developers have poor experience with geo databases and the fields required.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Use it, it has great benefits. Try to implement geo analysis in as much reports or presentations as possible, the audience love it. Also, try to define before the developoment of a new map the update periodicity, the indicators you want to show and at wich moment of the presentation you will show the map. If the timing and integration with the story telling is right, it will make a huge statement.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problem with static reports and non interactive visualizations when displaying results with clients. I have realized that it has a lot of benefits to show nice visualizations and interative results, the most important is that it helps with the credibility of the information. People trust more when data is nicely presented.

  ### 19. How I fell back in love with spatial analysis

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dan C. | Co-Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 20, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Amazing reliability and performance with super friendly support.
It is continually evolving and expanding its capabilities and I've learnt so much since working with Carto in 2014.
I particularly like the ability to link to data, explore it and share it so easily via URL and really appreciate the browser/cloud based approach. I can't remember the last time I needed to boot-up a desktop GIS and hunt for various files on my PC.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

There is very little to dislike to be honest. Carto hits the sweet spot for vast majority of my spatial analysis requirements.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a housing market analyst I need to work with a great variety of different datasets at various scales to make sense of what is happening. Carto lets me explore these complex spatial datasets in the cloud and and then share my discoveries with ease with non technical users who appreciate ease of use.

  ### 20. Comprehensive, lightweight, and fast geospatial solution

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 02, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

I like that CARTO Builder is a comprehensive and easy to use interface to do quick high-level exploration of the data.
And that CARTO API and CartoJS then further supports complex use of the data for analytics.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

CARTO on-premise at the moment is still not on containers. So setting up high-availability and recovery is not as straight-forward.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use CARTO to crunch and visualize our data related to real estate investments. We have leverage CARTO's APIs to build our own customized visualization to best support our internal investment team's research.

  ### 21. Great tool and great services

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jorge H. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The main advantages that CARTO gave us, IMO are:

1. The tool is powerful, but at the same time is very easy to use even for people with no data analytics background or expertise.
2. The visualization of your data makes easier taking some business decisions, especially those related to physical localization.
3. CARTO team are available for consulting them, especially at the beginning of our relationship. That point is very important, because without their help it would be quite complicated for us to use CARTO tool at 100%.
4. Due to COVID, we have to change a little our project scope, and talked with CARTO team and they gave us all the comprehension and facilities to change with no problem. We really appreciate that.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The least hepful about CARTO, maybe are these:

1. The learning curve at the beginning is a little bit complicated, especially for people with no data analytics expertise. If you want to use your company insights you have to make an upload of your data. At the beginning is a little bit complicated, but once you get in touch with CARTO team, you are able to do it in an easy way.
2. As we are talking about physical and geo items, the results are not as immediate as digital environment is. But this is not a CARTO topic but sector topic.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

You should have a clear goal at the beginning of your collaboration, and know what variables are you willing to use -anyway CARTO team may help you with that-. Once you get that, you will need one or two FTEs -not 100% focused- to implement CARTO and start working with your data.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Localization for physical items: branches, ATMs.
The main benefits for us is gaining efficiency in our investments.

**Official Response from Florence Broderick:**

> Thanks Jorge for your feedback! We really appreciate it. We're working hard on your point number 1 on the learning curve, spending plenty of time trying to improve the help and developer center experiences to provide special trainings. We'll keep you posted on this.

  ### 22. Great Spatial Visualization solution for any type of user

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ricardo S. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The API and the out-of-the-box data solution. It's very easy to upload information and stream it into a custom solution. The solutions support team is also fantastic.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The rendering library. It is still subpar to Mapbox GL. And the workaround with DeckGL is quite cumbersome.
Also, it's been years since a redesign to the Dashboard...

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data storage vs. GeoServer. It's nice having our clients able to access their data through the CARTO dashboard (as opposed to having our team create some sort of custom solution when using GeoServer). Another benefit is not having to worry about our backend infrastructure.

  ### 23. CARTO @ Telefónica Ecuador

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The perfect combination between how easy it is to create maps (Drag and drop its the way to go) and the flexibility of manipulating the code to customize the visualizations. Also the flexibility SQL tools give to the maps help a lot. The built in geographical functions provide helpful tools to create new ways to show insights.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The flexibility of the calculation of the widgets should allow percentages or custom calculations since we have seen that those contribute significantly to the story telling. Besides that the simplicity in the process of map building has most of the functions needed for map building. And, if something else in needed the sql flexibility allows to build it.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Start every project thinking of making the map updates automatic since the story telling and traceability will be richer. Also think about how the different built in tools like APIs to services, geographical functions, database connectors and other services will help you automate and deliver the storytelling and maps. Most of the viewers and interested partners in the map will love the maps and the story telling when it is told correctly.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Showing big amounts of data in a simple way. We have realized that the more beautiful the more reliable and believable the map is. A lot of the telco data is better presented in a geographical form and also helps the decision making process to be way faster and intuitive than with the current methodologies and reporting.

  ### 24. Great spatial repository and Back end support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Carlos V. | Managing partner, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 04, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Fast escalable spatial repo with great integration options. Their API works seamlessly

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

No downside, we have had a great experience

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hosting thousands of spatial files for satellite and wireless footprints. Automated updating of files.

  ### 25. Carto simplifies the use of interactivity, styling and external data connection

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Juliana M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 03, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

InfoAmazonia has been using CARTO for many years to translate geospatial analysis into maps. The user-friendly interface, which simplifies the use of interactivity and styling, is very helpful but also the possibility of combining it with the use of CartoCSS syntax language and SQL queries enables to customize and build powerful geospatial visualizations.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Nothing important, but one feature I miss when I embed the maps directly from Carto's website is the ability to define coordinates and minimum and maximum zoom levels for each map.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The easy way in which CARTO allows external data connection and its synchronized update allows us to provide quality journalistic service about the Amazon region. For instance, the real-time connection with fire detection data allowed us to follow the forest fires crisis and enables us to follow up on a daily basis irregular mining processes requests made at the Brazilian national mining agency (Mined Amazon project: https://infoamazonia.org/pt/maps/amazoniaminada/).

Now, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, the platform once again helps us to provide an important service to the audience: an automated map and dashboard updated daily with confirmed cases and deaths by Covid in the Brazilian Amazon region.

  ### 26. CARTO Builder: WebMapping for dummies

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Guillaume F. | Geospatial Expert, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

- Ease of use
- Fast Engine
- Great interoperability with Alteryx via CARTO connector
- Basemap from almost all sources can be added

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

- Limitation of CARTO Builder in terms of number of layers, styling, legend
- CARTO db require great coding skills
- Analysis tool require lot of in-memory and often broke your map

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

You need to know the limitations of the software (CARTO Builder) or to have high coding skills if you want to move forward with CARTO Engine. I am recommending this product cause of the ease of use and their powerful engine.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

You can can display/publish large dataset within minutes in CARTO Builder and provide Geospatial Data Visualization to your end-user really fast. Unlimited viewers/sharing is also a big differentiator with other vendors

  ### 27. Avison Young user review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Commercial Real Estate | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 26, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

User friendly capacity and overall look and feel. The ability to share it with multiple colleagues using the link/password protect function which allows them to interact (without concern over their ability to edit). An excellent visual tool but limited in its complexity using the builder model.
The ability to change the base map quickly and easily is great. As is the ease of use in changing the colour/size of the dots on the screen.
I do also like the widget tool that allows you to filter the map by a certain criteria.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

I think an option to share the raw data with the map viewers could be helpful, although probably in a limited capacity. The option to create a summary table or something within builder mode - e.g. number of total dots on the map, number in London, Manchester etc.
Also - would be really useful to have the ability to be able to somehow reupload the file that is already uploaded (without having to connect to Box), rather than having to upload a new file each time and deleting the old one.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Useful as a visual/presentation tool but hard to carry out detailed analytics with the tool using the builder model.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not so much solving problems - but creating useful visual tools for business development. Our main use case is a map of all of the valuations the valuation team have carried out internally which is used to understand previous instructions and helps speed up the process of data gathering when it comes to doing similar valuations in similar locations/sectors.

  ### 28. The best way to visualize Geographic data with the power of GCP

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luis Manuel F. | VP of Sales, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 02, 2021

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

So far, the best we have seen in the use of Carto is its ability to process large volumes of data in a few seconds and all the additional functionalities to be able to perform analytics.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

So far nothing, I think it always meets our expectations.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Topics of geomarketing, isochrones, routes, zone balancing, among others.

  ### 29. Great customer service and great product

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

- The flexibility with the layers I upload and display
- Being able to customize my popover over map points
- Ability to share it with people outside of my account access/organization (like to clients)
- Ability to customize what the shared view will look like with other people
- The different types of layers are quite intuitive within its layer management system
- Ability to access older datasets
- The different base map options I can select (e.g. if i want to make my map look more like a google map, there is a base map layer that can meet that need)

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

- I wish there were more online examples
- I wish I knew CARTO could increase the number of layers for my account if I had just asked sooner (make this more intuitive option)
- The KML files don't always work and I have to go through a series of back and forth to figure it out (so maybe just smarter KML parsing here)
- The option to change the base map is really hidden and it took me over 5 sessions with a rep to even realize that it's an available option

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Just take it slow and use one data set at a time.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm using CARTO to visualize where my target audience is traveling and the visualizations that the platform provides is really helpful in building out a map I can present.

  ### 30. Easy platform, killer technology

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mike L. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

For a layman, I feel Carto is extremely easy to use. They've always been so helpful.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

There's a bit of a learning curve but once you get over the initial hump it's fairly user friendly

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Do it!

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're a small subsidiary of a local real estate association that offers marketing tools for real estate agents. One of those tools is a water rights program that identifies boundary lines, ownership data, well logs, and many other details about a property. The company that built our previous system was not very helpful, and the system was extremely difficult to learn/use. Carto simplified the process and built us a new platform. The members love it.

  ### 31. Simple UI for Powerful Maps

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Online Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

The UI is really user friendly. The layering system works really well to choose what data you want to show and how you want it to be displayed. I also like the option to use SQL even with CSV uploaded data. It is also very easy to share maps with a link. These links never have to change and always include every update.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

The pricing system. Unfortunately, we can't store very much data per user.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work at a company that has different strategies around the country so it is very helpful for me to see metrics by location.

  ### 32. Great value out of the box

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sergio G. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

It was extremely easy to create powerful map based insights and it was possible with some effort to create customized ad-hoc dashboards with maps. Interactive reports with filtering capabilities created added value.
Available external datasets where also very useful.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

It was not that easy by that time to provide non map based charts together with the maps.
Licesing schema was not so flexible for some use cases, specially in on premise deployments.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Start with Builder but consider API based integrations if the case requires it.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Time ago, IoT and data based smart city solutions. The most important benefit was to introduce geographical analysis and representations easily and create map based solution without a GIS platform behind.
On the other hand, integrating external open data was easy and provided a great way to extract value from public administrations open data.

  ### 33. CARTO REVIEW

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Logistics and Supply Chain | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Ability to quickly map hot spots and take a screen shot to communicate to customers our coverage areas..

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Zip codes too small when zooming in and out. I'm often mapping zip codes for logistics. Need a visual indicator for sharing - if locked and not able to be shared, then it should say so.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it to map out where we should be conducting logistics, by taking customer demand data and mapping it over our logistics network capabilities.

  ### 34. Carto is the best mapping solution

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kitty K. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 10, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

We love how flexible Carto is, but also the quality of the maps we are able to deploy. Trying to create a real-time updated mapping solution without a product like Carto is gigantic time suck, and Carto has made it much easier than other solutions we reviewed.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

We've had a very good experience with Carto and don't have any negative comments at this point.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Find developers that know how to use it and it's a fantastic product.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We rapidly launched a tool to allow the public to submit details about Covid-19 symptoms they are experiencing to alert local officials. The data gets posted to a live Carto map that is used by first responders, city managers, mayors and public health officials. The tool has given us to foolproof way to display the scope and location of new outbreaks.

  ### 35. Black Germany

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

This platform allowed my class to create a sustainable e-platform for users to learn about the rich history of notable Black German citizens who haven’t been represented throughout world history as contributors.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

It’s a little sensitive to navigate. I had trouble with publishing updates to our map and the images showing up in tandem with the information as user hovered over “plots” on the map

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Benefit of creating sustainable platforms for people to learn history that was deemed inconsistent to white, standards of beauty or living. Representation matter to the Black community as a reminder of our inherent capabilities, especially when society tries to make us feel otherwise.

  ### 36. Great mapping platform for beginners and GIS alike

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gregory A. | Head of Product, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 07, 2017

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

CARTO is incredibly easy to use, and the platform makes advanced location-based analytics accessible even to those without a GIS background or training.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

CARTO's pricing can be a bit steep, and their different pricing packages can be a bit confusing.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Definitely give it a try!

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CARTO has enabled us to easily create beautiful, insightful, and impactful web-based maps. We've used these location-based analytics to solve a wide variety of business problems.

  ### 37. Great web-mapping tool!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2020

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Easy to use, the interface is intuitive. The widgets add nice features and lot of functionalities. The integration of Jupyter Notebooks and CartoFrames make it a powerful tool for spatial data science. The data observatory also adds almost unlimited possibilites with the addition of great datasets from reliable data providers. This allows analysts to push the insights to the next level and conveniently add external data sources to their maps.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Limited API functionalities to access data and features stored in Carto. It would need better GIS capabilities for more advanced users without relying on external tools. Carto Builder should be a key product in their offering and development efforts seem to be towards other products for the last few years.

**Recommendations to others considering CARTO:**

Great tool to easily publish and share maps to a large audience. The visualization features are nice and make intuitive maps. Not the traditionnal GIS tool, it lacks some spatial analysis features typically found in desktop tools but it makes a great tool for businesses looking at entry level web-based software. If you're looking for an entry-level SaaS software to share maps and data across an organization it's a great tool to consider. I would recommend to an organization that have a limited number of users, maybe not a solution for a 1000+ persons to share data

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Doing map visualization, finding insights between customers, markets, transactions and store locations. Creating maps to share internally and externally.

  ### 38. Very good treatment and willingness to solve problems.

For the possibility of developing a more personalized web page.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Development of web page of traffic status, camera visualization, etc. Madrid City Council.

What I like the most is the Team Support helping us with all issues and doubts. And the flexibility they have with us in order to scale our col·laboration with Carto according to our necessities.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Carto Builder limitations. Carto Builder has the possibility to create a lot of geospatial analysis easily. But sometimes we need more, we would like to personalise it even more.

**What do you like best about CARTO?**

Easy to setup, Carto Studio has been key in our efforts to outline how the coronavirus crises hits different places.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

So far so good, still I think it would be hard for us to cope with the actual cost.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a geomarketing company we work to shine a light over places and what makes them outstanding. Carto has provided us an easy to use way to perform our work, allowing the team to focus on data science researches and high impact changes.

We built an economic map outlining how they might emerge after quarantines. Its has been a major success, with lots of media coverage:

It has an intuitive layout which makes anyone with a spatial background easy to carry out computational activities. For someone not from a spatial background, there are lots of tutorials and helpful guides to help get you started. It's easy to use and easy to customise whatever maps/dashboards you are visualising.

**What do you dislike about CARTO?**

Some analysis tools can be hard to use at first without some guidance.

**What problems is CARTO solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was using CARTO for a university assignment - the assignment was to create a customisable dashboard using open-source data which allowed people to pan around the map and interact with widgets to change what data was being displayed. CARTO allowed for this process to be easy.
