## Carbon Black App Control Reviews
  ### 1. Powerful Application Control enabling Enhanced Security

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Prajwal V. | Security Analyst, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2024

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

It has given us confidence in securing critical systems by preventing unauthorized apps from running reducing out attack surface. The best part is it is easy to use and implement with good integration capabilities. Carbon Black Support is awesome and the long-term benefits of using the product every day helped us enhance security and compliance.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

While rare, we have encountered a few false positives like any other tool. But we took care of this with manual whitelisting. Carbon Black provides excellend value for organizations with strict security needs and hence, smaller organizations may find the pricing on the higher side.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has reduced Unauthorized Apps from running on our Endpoints significantly thus reducing the risk of malware infections. It also helps us meet compliance requirements where we allow only authorized applications to run. Another benefit is we can have strict lockdown on critical servers where security is crucial.

  ### 2. Carbon Black Review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abhiuday M. | Senior Administrator (Wintel & Virtualization), Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2024

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Carbon Black is really good application to protect your computer/infra to malicious activities like, unauthorised external device,

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Carbon Black has one thing I dislike that is it's sometimes more CPU & memory utilisation and generating false alert.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's protected your endpoint from unauthorised external device, like, USB device

  ### 3. Incredible & Efficient Threat Protection Soltuion

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Itumeleng T. | IT Support Specialist, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 06, 2021

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

CB Protection, as we have come to know it is like an antivirus, anti-malware, and all threats "Swiss knife" detection tool wrapped in one. CB Protection uses an application whitelist to approve and block good or harmful programs in all workstations and servers connected to a network.

I like the fact that you can create different policies for different users that belong to various departments because, for example, some users may belong to the dev department where they require more access and less restriction as they run different codes from different interfaces and do application testing.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

The drawback about CB Protection is that it will constantly block any "unknown" processes or executables and thus also create false positives.

Users at times get overwhelmed by CB Protection pop-ups due to it always blocking executables. CB Protection will even block application processes that belong to common software like Outlook, and even the operating system's critical WSUS service gets no luck from CB Protection's robustness.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The world as we know it now is all about critical data and making sure that data is kept safe; that is our currency as we speak. CB Protection is crucial to data protection so that malware, viruses, trojans, zero-day threats are nullified completely within each workstation and server that belongs to a network.

  ### 4. A free FTE in every box! And a good night's sleep!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The fact that the User Exchange is loaded with the very experts a company would call if they had an incident and needed help. It truly is like getting a free FTE for being a customer! Having endpoints in high enforcement so that only the files that are approved are allowed to run. The ability to single out the most threatening endpoints. Now a part of VMWare so the wonderful people of Carbon Black will do even more amazing things!

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

I would like to see a Google style search to eliminate redundant rules. I would also like to have the panes freeze on pages so I could see the column names as I scroll down.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

DO NOT fail to account for the value from the User Exchange! Many members are top IR and MSSP professionals. These are the very people you pay to come in and help if you have been breached. They are sharing their findings and helping you configure the product to stop advanced threats.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Protecting endpoints from malware. Knowing what software exists within our organization. Having all of our endpoints in high enforcement gives us a consistent level of protection and helps eliminate lateral movement of any threats that might get in. The console also helps uncover endpoints that have general OS health issues so we can address them quickly.

  ### 5. CB Protection - Application Whitelisting

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kevin K. | IT Director, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

One of the best features of CB Protection is its ability to hash out and quickly locate executables on all of our workstations and servers. This helps us tremendously when searching for and weeding out known-bad and suspected-bad files from our network. It's primary role as an application whitelist tool is very effective and has prevented numerous attempts to infect our environment by malicious applications (and careless users!)

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

At our current installation version (v8) the administration interface is a bit aged and clunky. We've also had some problems with some processes being unintentionally blocked. However, CB support is top-notch and have always helped with we've had issues.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Speak with their representatives. We had a very good pre-launch discussion with their sales and engineering staff in order to get more comfortable with the product and educate ourselves on all of the different aspects of the product's features. Their support is top-notch!

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The biggest problem we were looking to solve with CB Protection was to help prevent the execution of ransomware programs as we had been hit by several in quick succession. The product has delivered on this and has prevented countless other infections from malware and just unwanted applications.

  ### 6. Deployment Is Easy.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Scott S. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 06, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Making and maintaining policies is very straightforward, quick, easier and granular, and you can decide which systems and users you want to authorize.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

If the solution was internet, it would be easier. To have a compromise on Prem this day is not a good strategy.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Whitelisting is a very complicated process, but the best approach is to keep the systems safe and secure.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Any business has a tough job to apply whitelisting, to make sure that they have the profiles, individuals, reviews and all of the topics to do so. Carbon black Security has a very powerful, integrated solution to help you improve your processes at the compliance level. It is very easy to identify an application for any activity, allow it or block it.

  ### 7. Carbon Black Protection

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeremy G. | Cyber Security Admin, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

It's great that it allows use granular control over what people install and it also helps with compliance to make sure people don't start installing software that they are just familiar with using when it could cause legal issues and not just security concerns.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Not all software is seem in their group to have given it a Cb Collective Defense Cloud Information score and if you want to allow clean software.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

I don't have any for this one.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Protecting users from creating the dumb. Not really solving any problems except for security concerns. Don't fall into the "having this installed, we are good" feeling since security is in layers.

  ### 8. Solid whitelisting solution that has proven its worth more than once!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris B. | IS, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

It stops malware/ransomeware before it can execute. Fairly easy to manage considering the level of protection that it provides.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

We have experienced some increase in time it takes for windows patches to finish, but it isn't too bad.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Always do an extensive proof of concept before purchasing, but from my experience this product is fantastic. The fear of implementing it was the hardest part about the whole thing. Take the leap and be protected! Any company that doesn't implement whitelisting is just asking to be compromised at this point.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No longer worry about someone accidentally clicking on a phishing email and running a malicious application. If it isn't approved to run, it doesn't run. Ransomeware is no longer a concern...poof.

  ### 9. Armed to the Teeth - Functional Security with Real Benefits

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospitality | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

CB Protection is a robust platform capable of repelling a majority of threats seen today. As the dominant application whitelisting platform, it gives granular controls and the ability to customize each environment to your company's needs.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

A double-edged sword, the platform is as strong as you make it. The dangers of low enforcement and the amount of information overload you can receive from the platform means there is significant setup time. It may also provide some user discomfort when moving into high enforcement, but it is certainly doable.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

If you want a solid application control and whitelisting platform, this is the best product to accomplish that. It will take time, and you need to be careful not to be overly permissive, but there is an achievable balance that this product is best suited to find.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The platform is as strong as you make it. Whether you are looking for visibility into unknown threats or you want to stop those threats at the door, it gives you the power to view and act on them. Custom rules are the bread and butter for combating advanced threats with an easy to use interface for businesses just starting out. Automation improves business integration and user experience, coupled with a dedicated support team always there to provide assistance.

  ### 10. A User-Friendly Protection

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Caolan M. | Project Manager, Marketing and Advertising, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 08, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Positivity of this application is its ability to control device that helps me to vie and to allow / disallow the usage of certain devices in my certain environment also software blocking tool that is a little bit annoying for some organization but for some like mine where we use only some certain applications and software’s it’s a good choice. Granular Policy setting of this application can detect and block unknown malware and viruses. Intuitive user of this application helps in better understanding of the application as compare to reading its whole manual and live response is also quite appreciable in it.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Cons of this application are not observed so far due to its user friendly nature but sometimes it block some files that are becomes corrupted and becomes difficult to recover them but although no bad effects observed from this particular application.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

One should have a realistic phase in approach understand your environment firstly before going through this application otherwise it is highly recommended due to its all feature that makes it completely a whole package to secure files and documents at an organization as well as personal level.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Carbon black offers Cb protection an application to control solution for enterprise and critical systems. It is basically use as a replacement to antivirus and other malware software in order to provide full protection to a company’s documents. With Cb you can see what files appeared not only what is suspected. Blocking certain files, getting notifications, prevent other users from installing certain programs is a main feature in this application. You get information you can actually use both for preventing malware /virus instead of clunky engine.

  ### 11. Advanced Threat Protection with ease of use

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 20, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Moved from Trend to CB and so far no issues. GUI is easy to use and all options are intuitively where they should be yet the platform is quite powerful if you want to dig deeper and enable NextGen AV features.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

It is expensive and sometimes the product is unavailable because it is SaaS based. However, we were assured that local agents would still work with the latest definitions that was downloaded.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Make sure to set a $ budget and make sure that you do not enroll more then required for your needs

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

AV and malware
Endpoint management
Next gen AV features like blocking powershell scripts

  ### 12. Protect with Protection

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Rather easy to implement and adds a great element to security.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

With the amount of unsigned executables, it can be a little tedious managing.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

It's whitelisting, so there is a lot of work to do, upfront. However, depending on how mature your process is for bringing in new executables, it's relatively simple to maintain.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to ensure, with high confidence, that the only things running on our network are safe.

  ### 13. CB Protect - Value shown almost immediately

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The product dashboard allows ease of separating business units and still allowing ease of view.

Very few applications have issue when agent is interrogating the program.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Break out into manageable groups, run in High Enforcement Report Only (HERO)

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used it to search for malicious files, and also track USB usage as well.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrew M. | Andrew Martlock, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Cb is lightweight and easy to use compared to our previous solution, Sophos.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Cb initially was unstable in our Win7 environment but works great in Win10.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Cb uses fewer system resources than other solutions

  ### 15. CB Protection is a great product!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 15, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

CB protection was recently implemented for my company. The software was not all that hard to learn and the professional services are excellent. Easily customizable rules and policies!

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Nothing so far. Implementation was helped by professional services and everything is working great!

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

I would highly recommend CB Protection. Great software, great company support, and fairly easy to use and administer once you learn the product. Does a great job!

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Server antivirus and secondary option for workstations.

  ### 16. Great Enterprise Product, But Learning Curve Is Steep.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 04, 2019

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The Logs are very granular. Visibility is great and deployment is a breeze

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

The Learning curve is a little steeper than other tools.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

CB Response has a ton of potential, you are able to get very granular with the with current processes and new spawned processes. If you are willing to invest in CB Response because of its potential, Invest in hte training required to properly utilize it.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CB Protection is used to lock down Point-Of-Sale Computers.

  ### 17. Highly Effective, if a bit involved

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 15, 2018

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

This is, hands down, my favorite application whitelisting I've ever used. It can approve by the file's hash value (SHA-256), the publisher/certificate, or a number of other custom options. High customizable across the environment, and even enabled me to completely eradicate bloatware (such as ASK Toolbar) within two weeks of full implementation.

If your installation is on a server that can access the internet, it can also use VirusTotal and CB's own reputation service to auto-approve some programs based on collective input from other customers (reducing management time).

Other providers tried to get me to switch because CB Protection uses a lot of man-hours to manage (which is true), but they cannot reliably block some"benign but unwanted" programs without using a blacklisting approach. CB Protection means I can block unwanted programs from the get-go, even if they are basically harmless.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

This is a highly involved implementation and management. Expect six (6) months or more to call the project done - anything else means that you may very well shut down some critical applications and/or let things through that should not be. Trust me; take the time, plan your policies, and be cautious.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Plan your implementation, and work closely with your Professional Services person. They can really help you. And pay for the training for each administrator (at the time of this review, each purchase comes with two training slots for your company).

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

(A form of) Antimalware and version control are the two biggest items. Also, in my current environment, we're using it in an offline scenario - no internet access. All other whitelisting and antimalware solutions REQUIRED internet to function - a big NO-NO for SCADA environments.

  ### 18. Quite a beast

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian S. | Information Technology Infrastructure Intern, Maritime, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Carbon Black seems to be unlike any other endpoint security product that we've seen. While other (more traditional) products focus on their ability to keep your company safe, Carbon Black focuses on *your* ability to keep your company safe and giving you tools to do that. In our situation, we could not realistically remove local admin rights from the majority of our PCs, so Carbon Black gave us a way to control what people are running without fully removing admin rights. The verbosity of control that we have over our endpoints and the reaction time that Carbon Black gives us to threats is surpassed by no other software that we have seen so far.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Part of the territory of having verbose control over a system is that it is more complicated to use and time consuming to manage. This can scare some of our staff away from being trained on it, leaving only a select few who can manage the product. That being said, it is still well worth the effort.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Have at least one full time staff assigned just to Carbon Black and mitigation - especially during initial implementation.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Protecting our endpoints even though we couldn't realistically remove admin rights from most of them.

  ### 19. CarbonBlack Protection is the real deal

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Chemicals | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The best part of the CB-EP tool is that it works! Using CB-EP we have reduced workstation re-stages from thousands a month to under 100. Our "category A" virus infections are below 15 each month, and only seen on systems outside of high enforcement. We are blocking hundreds of malicious files each week.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

The biggest dislike is that competitors to CB try to pitch whitelisting technology that is years behind in capabilities and lacking in features. Management sees this as redundant technology when they talk with the competitors sales staff. The CB-EP tool is in a league of its own.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

You will need to change your company culture, but in the end it is worth the effort.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CB-EP is the primary endpoint protection tool we have. We have this on 75,000 endpoints with 95% in high enforcement. Without CB-EP we would be re-active vs. being pro-active in preventing threats in our environment.

  ### 20. Carbon Black

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Accounting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 26, 2018

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Easy to install and easy to be trained on how to use

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Not the best customer service in regards to any trouble-shooting.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need to beef up our cyber security space with more products.

  ### 21. Easy to install - provided instant protection

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Utilities | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The product's forums have good assistance in creating rules to block threats, and also assistance on how to customize to your environment.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Requires some overhead rule creation for custom applications.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Have a realistic "Phase in" approach, make sure you analyze your environment first before trying to go into full enforcement.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are trying to restrict software to only "Known and approved", and this product is assisting by not re-allowing any malware/greyware/unwanted programs to be installed when a PC is refreshed. It's helping clean out our environment.

  ### 22. Cb Protection - a great security product

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kristopher D. | Senior Information Security Analyst, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 04, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Excellent security controls and protection.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Some performance overhead. Did not work in our Citrix environment.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

It is worth the time and effort to stand up.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Visibility into endpoint executions.

  ### 23. Fantastic product to protect your assets

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Investment Management | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2017

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The ease of whitelisting apps and the ability to only allow trusted programs to run is great.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

It would be nice if this solution was offered as a SaaS

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

System protection.

  ### 24. Carbon Black offers Endpoint detection and blocking granularity like never before!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dan A. | Cyber Security Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 09, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

With Carbon Black on our endpoints, we were able to detect and block bit coin mining software that wasn't even detected my our AV software. Using a score from Virus Total threat feed, Carbon Black alerted us of the malware. Carbon Black showed us in detail how the exe was spawned, which processes were involved and that it was communicating to an external IP address. Through the carbon black console, we were able to connect to the machine and delete the exe. Then we set the file (hash) to be banned, this way any endpoints in the future would not be able to run this process, keeping our Enterprise free of these resource stealing bit mining. This is just one real world example of how Carbon Black has paid for itself in our environment.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

There isnt too much to dislike but if I had to pick it would probably be the console, it could be a little more user intuitive but we are sending our CB data to Splunk, so we use the console minimally.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Test CB out in a POC and you are sure to realize its ROI.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Threat hunting and detection and banning hashes are all uses of CB.

  ### 25. Great company, Great product. Carbon Black makes sure your implementation is successful.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brad M. | Senior Enterprise Systems Engineer, Retail, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 13, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Carbon Black Enterprise Protection works exactly as advertised. Whether it’s malicious software or just unwanted software Carbon Black Enterprise protection stops it all while allowing what we want. We see the benefits daily. Since being in High Enforcement we have seen numerous cases of Ransom-ware stopped, along with tons of unwanted software from being installed. I wear many hats in my role and work with many technologies, and no company I work with offers the quality of services that Carbon Black does. Their Training, Planning and Implementation Services, Support, User Community, and Tech Assessments ensure customer success.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

We have a handful of 3rd party unknown, unsigned software packages that can be tricky to keep running seamlessly to the end user. Especially when these packages auto update themselves. You really need to have a good understanding of these packages to be able to create the rules needed to allow them to function. Bit9 Support is great on helping you out with these rare cases.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Contact Carbon Black and setup a trial. I think you will be sold.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Number one is definitely stopping malicious software from executing. Shortly before rolling out Carbon Black Enterprise protection we were hit with a couple instances of Ransom-ware. Since rolling out Carbon Black in High Enforcement Mode we have had none. On top of stopping malicious software Carbon Black EP stops tons of unwanted software. We have some users who are local admins on their PC's due to a 3rd party applications requirements. Carbon Black allows this software to run, while keeping the Local admins from installing unwanted or malicious items, even with Admin Rights. We also have a level of visibility that we have never had. Paired with Carbon Black Enterprise Response you will know exactly what is going on in your Environment.

  ### 26. Everything you wanted outside of traditional AV that you never realized you wanted.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David M. | Network Administrator, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 15, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Deep intelligence looking at both threats from the cloud (external connectors) and simple file based looks and reputation.
With traditional AV, you have signatures and other outdated technology. With Carbon Black Enterprise Protection, you can see not only what is suspected, but also what files appeared in the timeframe. You can also block certain files, get notifications, prevent users from installing certain programs and the like. Instead of a clunky engine that just scans all day long, you get information you can actually use both for preventing malware/viruses/worms, but also tracking user behaviors and other important information.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

This isn't a "install and walk away" product. There is a lot of setup. I don't like this in the sense that I don't have a ton of time to set it up. However I will say that the more time you put into it, the more time you will ultimately save. Just be aware there is a significant investment up front that needs to happen to see gains. Else you are wasting your time.
Also, as of time of writing I'm not able to push the agents out from the console, which is annoying as I have to be at the station to install it, or use other installation tools.
You also need to change your mindset regarding how this works as compared to traditional AV, and doesn't register in Windows as an "Antivirus" product.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Problems Solved:
1. Visibility into the endpoint regarding files installed, changes etc.
2. Software installation blocking
3. Advanced Malware/program launch

Benefits:
1. Lightweight footprint with up to date analytics and protections from changing threat landscapes.
2. Configuration for a single program, then deploy across the enterprise.
3. More understanding of problems created with the product (if any) with the good logging.

  ### 27. Carbon Black Customer Service is top-notch

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff R. | Information Technology Security Analyst, Utilities, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

I appreciate that CB takes the time to walk us through the deployment but then continue to follow up with us on any concerns/issues we might have as we go from walking to running. We've had some issues with our server and every time CB has been able to resolve it quickly and professionally. That says volumes about their capabilities and belief in their product.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

There's quite a bit of functionality in the API that I hope moves into the product itself in the future.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

There are other good endpoint detection products out there but none give the remediation and integration options that Carbon Black does. There's a bit of a curve to get it tuned and set up the way you want but they're there the whole way to help. I see us being able to automate functions with CB that we couldn't have dreamed of doing 6 months ago.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its been a huge boon in quickly re-mediating endpoint malware issues using the live response. We're also recognizing how often crapware gets packaged with legitimate downloads are are taking steps to eliminate this issue. We love the ability to pivot from a single IOC across the entire enterprise to see how deep an issue may be.

  ### 28. Had a great experience so far

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michael E. | Manager, Digital Operations, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 09, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

White listing that works! We were getting eaten alive by crypto virus encrypting our users data. Started to role out microsofts SRP which worked but then started blocking useful things like webex. So being able to approve apps and installers is very useful.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

It can be hard to get rules correct. Would be nice if you could put an endpoint in low enforcement for say 20 minutes with out them having to enter a key.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Stopping cryptowall and other malware. Whitelisting applications we trust and stopping all of the others.

  ### 29. Admin of Bit9

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kevin M. | IT Systems Team Lead, Entertainment, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

This is a great product for gaining complete control over malware. Anti-virus often times will miss things and cannot protect against all threats. Bit9 provides application white listing and really helps us only allow approved software to run on our systems. This helps us protect against zero day attacks or unapproved software on the systems. The tech support is fantastic and for good reason - you will most likely need them. Deploying the agent is easy with SCCM or the like

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

This is a very cumbersome product. They make you attend a 2 day training class just to get started with it. They also highly suggest you work with an engineer to get it up and running. Getting it up and running involves a slow process of putting the software in visibility mode to learn and then increasing its power to lock down. Can be hard sometimes to troubleshoot why a block is happening and this is compounded by the complex nature of approving and trusting files and programs

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

The system tries to put in pre-built things to make setup go faster, and this helps but this is not a turn-key and walk away solution. You will spend a lot of time on this each day/week so factor that into your total cost of ownership

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Malware defense

  ### 30. Carbon Black(Formerly Bit9) Keeps us secure from ourselves

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 20, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Sometimes our worst enemy is ourselves. Bit9 keeps us from going too quickly and installing things we'd regret later. It also allows us to monitor how our userbase is using and installing software.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Sometimes things will continually be blocked for no apparent reason, and that requires administrators to look into the issue. Getting users to understand that they can't delete a whitelisted file since it whitelists on an individual file level.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Users install things willy-nilly sometimes without thinking of the security ramifications. This allows us to monitor and guide our users and keep them from introducing malware onto our network.

  ### 31. It works as advertised

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tom B. | Systems Supervisor, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The customization that can be added to the product allow it to be extremely flexible. It can be deployed to anyone from your administrative staff to software developers. The product also has self-updating features, where rules are automatically added so applications that have their own auto-update can do so successfully.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Infrastructure requirements are very heavy for large companies. The push is for large environments to be on physical hardware, but most large companies utilize some sort of virtual hardware. The product does not currently scale well for large organizations that have diverse support structures.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Viewfinity and/or Beyondtrust. They don't do exactly the same thing, but have capabilities similar to Bit9.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

On any given day we have thousands of new files being introduced into the environment. The product is used to limit users from running applications that have not been pre-approved. I can't recall having a virus outbreak since we moved the PCs to a high-enforcement/lockdown state.

  ### 32. Great Endpoint detection

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 09, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

instantly being able to block malicious files across the enterprise in minutes. Also, we've implemented several custom rules which allow us to block other unusual activities on the endpoint. While we're not yet in high enforcement, we still see a lot of benefit from the blacklisting and event rule blocking functionality.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

There is management overhead in maintaining a approved software/file list.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Advanced endpoint protection beyond AV. While we still run AV from one of the top AV vendors, we see great value from blacklisting and event rule blocking functions.

  ### 33. Usage of Bit9 to support compliance with unsupported systems

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amir M. | Sr. Security Analyst, Airlines/Aviation, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 02, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

I find that the product is highly configurable, but at the same time the console is simple and easy to use. We were able to have the system up and running and integrated with our SIEM with little effort. In addition, Support has been quick to respond, and the team at Bit9 are always ready to assist.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

We did not really have any negative experiences. Nothing to complain about.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

I would recommend at the very least to do a POC.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We had 3 main issues to solve:

1. We had some systems which were out of support, and patches are no longer available.
2. We have some devices which are "air-gapped" for a majority of the time (tablets). The application that is running on them requires elevated privilege. We wanted to be able to maintain the integrity of the devices
3. We have some other devices which are portable, and want to ensure that if unauthorized USB devices are plugged in, we can block and notify.

Benefits realized:
1. We were able to rapidly deploy the solution fulfill a gap. Resources required were minimal, and the product allowed us to have enhanced visibility.
2. We were able to allow the business to use the tablets, while still maintaining integrity
3. We were able to protect our portable devices
4. We are able to report for our PCI business as usual

  ### 34. Powerful Product for Control of Your Environment

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

This product really works. It analyzes everything being installed or executed. Even script files. It will stop anything malicious. There are many filters for events and you can group by many parameters. Create as many policies as you want for "special attention" computers. Get alerts in your mail.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

It is easy to be overwhelmed by the volume of information available. Everybody's environment is different so take you time learning what is normal in yours before you tighten up the policies that block execution. Roll it out slowly so you are not flooded with requests for approval. Have well-thought out processes in place for managing approval requests. Some selections are not "sticky" so going back to previous pages you have to re-filter and that is annoying.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

This will require significant time to set up and customize for your environment. Be prepared to have an admin spend up to 50% of their time for several months until you have it dialed in.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Like everyone, we want to stop zero day attacks. This stops everything... unless it is an "approved" program being used maliciously. If you get Carbon Black you can detect that sort of behavior and you are really covered.

  ### 35. New to CBEP & CBER

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 15, 2016

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The application is extremely intuitive things are laid out in a manor in which a user can get to what hey need pretty easily.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

The UI has a tendency to time out when performing more complex tasks, the UI could also definitely use a refresh.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Its a journey to get there but when you start realizing benefits its very enjoyable.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Better protecting the company and users from cyber security threats.

  ### 36. Bit9 security application

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 11, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

SRS threat database and fast tech support. We like that we no longer have to worry about malware issues. A side effect it also prevents un-authorize software installations.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Sometimes files whitelisted will be blocked by the client. There are some performance hit with developers. Bit9 support has helped with those issues so it is much better.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

I would definitely recommend trying it, we no longer have to clean and remove malware and virus. Bit9 also has a threat database that updates with new threats daily so if our anti-virus doesn't catch something we have Bit9 to catch it

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have zero malware issues since using Bit9, it also prevents users from installing un-authorize software as a side benefit as we are in high enforcement.

  ### 37. Excellent if not slightly quirky security software package

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Chemicals | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Ease of rule design. Very low resource impact footprint on the clients. Very customizable.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Reporting is often lacking common sense features that need to be filled in via SQL queries. Sometimes rules do not work the way one would envision from the outset.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Take your time with your roll-out and design of your rules. A long evaluation cycle can be the difference in breaking your environment or making it infinitely more secure.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are securing a POS endpoint environment to maintain PCI compliance for about 1000 locations across the US.

  ### 38. Great people / product / support

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elizabeth F. | Senior Channel Account Executive, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 07, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The team at Bit9 is awesome. They work continuously to build a strong platform and are flexible enough to be able to flow through the changing architecture of security, creating a great product with awesome features.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Bit9 is still growing. They have challenges like all growing companies, but are working diligently through those challenges and building a strong foundation.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

They are a great product with lots of great features. The installation / configuration assistance provided is spot on! Great, great product!

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Security. PCI compliance. Remote office challenges. Fewer breaches. Fewer remote challenges.

  ### 39. The best available endpoint security

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Application whitelisting is the future of truly secure endpoints and Bit9 is at the front of that movement. Easy Installation and a lot of valuable information even when it is initially installed and only reporting on the installation and use of

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Moving up the security chain requires knowing all of the applications that are in use by the business units. That can be a daunting task for companies with smaller IT staffs.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Recommended for top-down structures. Companies with many "Battlin' Business Units" may find it impossible to get buy-in from all of management.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are slowly replacing traditional antivirus with application whitelisting

  ### 40. Bit9 Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Banking | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Bit9, although complex, has been properly designed for ease of use.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

I don't have many dislikes however if I had to name something. I would say it is that support seems to require agent logs for every case logged.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are increasing end-point security alone with the possibility of discontinuing the use of AV.

  ### 41. Great solution for visibilty into the files on your network.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Real time ability to look up hashes on your endpoints and ban malicious files.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

How difficult it is to get to high enforcement. Mostly because how bad even large companies are at digitally signing their files.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Needs very high IO database.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Preventing malicious files from executing and exploiting endpoints.

  ### 42. Bit9 gives us another layer of protection against the fight of malware

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

I like the fact that I have visibility into the organization and what end users software is installed, are running as well as trying to install.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Bit9 takes some time to get used to your organization and takes some massaging to get end points into high enforcement

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Make it easier to get into high enforcement

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The main benefit is the white listing capability and the ability to lock down the end points from installing software, also preventing unknown applications through drive by attacks.

  ### 43. Helpful, secure, but tedious to set up initially

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Devices | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 12, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

Lock everything first, open as needed. It's quite secure

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Having to fine tune Bit9 ... it requires a lot of work

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

One of the best ways to gain insight into what's happening within your organization. Bundle that with Carbon Black, and you have a good way to perform forensics as well

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Security and insight into what's happening on our servers and computers

  ### 44. Bit 9 Review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Construction | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 01, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

I like the extra security functions it gives us

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

Find it a little difficult at times. We're still in the process of trying to get into high enforcement from low and it is very challenging sometimes

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Virus issues that are costing time and money to constantly have to re-image infected machines.

If we can get into high should def cut this down

  ### 45. Bit9 Review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 05, 2015

**What do you like best about Carbon Black App Control?**

The ability to securely control the environment with a central console.
The console was easy to setup / use.

**What do you dislike about Carbon Black App Control?**

The initial manual approval of applications was brutal for both the users, as well as the administrators.
With the version I was using unable to control AD security groups with Bit9.

**Recommendations to others considering Carbon Black App Control:**

Get it and use it, as it will bring a far more secure environment.
Have a large test group.

**What problems is Carbon Black App Control solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A much more secure environment with application whitelisting is awesome.
