## About AppArmor
AppArmor is a Linux kernel security module that enforces mandatory access control (MAC) policies to restrict programs' capabilities, thereby enhancing system security. By confining applications to predefined profiles, AppArmor limits their access to system resources, mitigating potential threats from both known and unknown vulnerabilities. Integrated into the mainline Linux kernel since version 2.6.36, AppArmor has been actively supported by Canonical since 2009. Key Features and Functionality: - Per-Program Profiles: AppArmor allows administrators to create specific security profiles for individual applications, defining permissible actions and resource access. - Path-Based Access Control: Unlike label-based systems, AppArmor utilizes file paths to enforce access controls, simplifying profile management and compatibility across different file systems. - Learning Mode: This mode logs policy violations without enforcing restrictions, enabling administrators to refine profiles based on actual application behavior before full enforcement. - Integration with Linux Security Modules (LSM): AppArmor is implemented using the LSM framework, ensuring seamless integration with the Linux kernel. Primary Value and Problem Solved: AppArmor enhances system security by providing a straightforward and effective method for implementing mandatory access controls. By restricting applications to their intended functionalities, it prevents exploitation of software vulnerabilities, including zero-day attacks. Its path-based approach and user-friendly profile management make it accessible for administrators, offering a less complex alternative to other MAC systems like SELinux. This ease of use, combined with robust security enforcement, makes AppArmor a valuable tool for protecting Linux systems against unauthorized access and potential threats.

## AppArmor Reviews
 ### 1. Invisible Enforcer: The AppArmor Edge in Our DevOps for IT industry

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aman Kumar M. | Senior Software Engineer (Data) , Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 07, 2025

**What do you like best about AppArmor?**

What I appreciate most about AppArmor is its 'set it and shield it' philosophy — once a profile is in place, it quietly and reliably protects without constant babysitting. Its path-based enforcement feels intuitive, and the clarity in logs makes troubleshooting precise. In a world of noisy security tools, AppArmor is the silent sentinel that just works
It good for beginners to all level professional

**What do you dislike about AppArmor?**

For me
AppArmor’s path-based rules can be rigid in dynamic setups, making profile upkeep a bit tedious. It’s powerful, but not always plug-and-play

**What problems is AppArmor solving and how is that benefiting you?**

AppArmor limits app access to only what’s needed, reducing risk from exploits. It’s lightweight, easy to manage, and keeps my Linux systems secure with minimal fuss.

 ### 2. Convoluted applications might call for configurations

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gerente P. | Program Manager, Hospitality, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 15, 2024

**What do you like best about AppArmor?**

I found it especially useful when dealing with Web servers as I was able to filter access from the Web server to other parts of the system. This focused approach helps reduce the risk if a given program was to meet an exploit and would thus contain the possible fallout.

**What do you dislike about AppArmor?**

I faced the challenge of creating a profile for a media editing software that needed to interact with other system folders to work. The choice of pre-configured profiles was not very diverse and the ability to set fine-grained permissions seemed cumbersome.

**What problems is AppArmor solving and how is that benefiting you?**

AppArmor, has the advantage of limiting the movement of programs within the system so that its use is beneficial. This kind of compartmentalization is effective to avoid harming malware, or compromised programs to occur.

 ### 3. AppArmor - Safety

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anu S. | Senior Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 08, 2022

**What do you like best about AppArmor?**

AppArmor Safety is our mobile safety app platform is easier to set up, manage, modified in real-time using our content management system. It uses pathname enforcement and is benefitted by system user administrator. Controlling files and directories is simple.

**What do you dislike about AppArmor?**

It takes longer to load an AppArmor policy. if there is more than one Path, reference directs to same application. System sometimes hangs when huge application is loaded. It doesn't have multi category security.

**What problems is AppArmor solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Multi-Level Security (MLS) is inefficient and requires more MLS. I have benefitted from path entries and capabilities entries in profiles. AppArmor has simplified text files. It remains companies to be more productive.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Stassie C. | Accounting, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2021

**What do you like best about AppArmor?**

What I enjoy best about AppArmor is how user-friendly it is and how easily it allows the user to navigate through the app. The emergency notification mechanism in AppArmor is by far the most useful feature. My management has benefited from the emergency notification systems in resolving a number of difficulties with our software. The documentation may then be used by the corporation to gain broader access to your facilities once they have been approved. Hundreds of businesses around the world have trusted AppArmor to design unique safety apps, emergency notification systems, and corporate command - and - control applications to keep their people safe in a crisis. Vaccine passport abilities, self-screening tools, unlimited mass alerts, and other new AppArmor features can help organizations prepare for global pandemic concerns.

**What do you dislike about AppArmor?**

What I dislike about AppArmor is how tough it may be to browse the platform at times. When myself or another Administrator encounters problems, we contact AppArmors' tech support, and the problem is always handled in minutes. If you've decided to buy, you won't be concerned with the price if you've made that decision. Because of Firejail's pre-made profile, I have occasionally been unable to access Visual Studio Code.

**Recommendations to others considering AppArmor:**

Recommendations to others considering AppArmor are to ensure you are navigating around the app correctly and reach out to Support if help is needed as their turn around time for response is excellent!

**What problems is AppArmor solving and how is that benefiting you?**

By reporting infractions via syslog and auditd, the AppArmor system enforces the rules. The system inhibits users from operating when it behaves in this manner.

While they work differently, both AppArmor and SELinux provide “mandatory access control” (MAC) security. ... With AppArmor, it only has access to things that a PDF viewer needs access to. AppArmor is particularly useful for restricting software that may be exploited, such as a web browser or server software

**What do you dislike about AppArmor?**

AppArmor is a Mandatory Access Control or MAC system. ...
