Do you have an old computer and you need a local webserver to start developing your own websites? Do you want to learn something about webservers by configuring your local machine? Then go for Apache: you can install it by yourself or using a package with a DB included.

Do you need a web hosting? Many use Apache as their webserver: it is reliable and stable, and it is open source: that means that the software can be continuously improved by the community.

As it is Open Source software, it's inexpensive. There is a cost, though: you obviously pay for the expertise needed if you purhnase services based on it. If you use Apache by yourself, then you'd consider the time you spend as the cost for setup. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I've set up some local development machines and I've learn some useful skills while configurating them. A great advantage is that you don't have to spend any money to buy a license (but remember, your job have to be compliant with the same open source licenses Apache has been released under). Apache is the oldest and still most widely used webserver. It shines because of a large ecosystem of modules and a thriving community. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Over the time I think it has also become a bit bloated. For hosting statics I recommend Nginx now. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Again , Apache is not the fastest and leanest option for hosting static content. However, if you have a PHP stack, there is not better alternative in the market better than Apache web server. The pricepoint is great; it's modularity and ability to manually configure it along side the fact that it runs on windows, linux, and bsd is pretty cool too (maybe it runs on mac; idunno) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

with modularity and an adherance to the principles of unix with configuration files etc comes with the downside of having to know how to configure them; it's difficult to do if you've never taken classes on sysadmin stuff. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
