It's web-based, and it has most features you could ask for at a lower cost. Every year it gets more and more powerful and easier to use. Customer support is quick and responsive. Integration was easy, but I would suggest running a parallel system for several months. Switching from site to site and year to year is easy, in the same tab which makes using often a breeze. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** There are a lot of fields that are under "reporting" tabs instead of integrated to the bio tab. Some state-specific reporting fields are duplicated (sex vs. gender, race vs. race 1, etc.). Transportation planning and meal counts are difficult to use and implement. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Access for all staff, including when off-campus. Migrating to Alma was certainly the best decision for the district compared to other options. The Alma team is always interested in receiving feedback to contribute towards a better overall product. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** Integrations can be slow to roll out, but that's the cost of doing business with a smaller company where you know everyone by name. I also love how easy it is to create your own report card templates and create your own grading systems and monitor everything from one platform. Parent communication is also very easy! **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** I wish it kept the history of group messages I send. Also, it would be very useful to be able to view messages that teachers send to track school-home communication. It is intuitive so some of our teachers did not need any training and some needed a little bit of support. The menu is user friendly, which is especially good for teachers that struggle technologically. I like being able to find information on each student, including home phone numbers and siblings in the school. I love that everything we need for school on a day to day basis is easily accesible, including the school calendar. I love how easy it is to upload comments for report cards and progress reports. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** I don't like that I am not able to print grades for individual students. Or not being able to print out class grades per subject. Sometimes I need to print out an individual students' grades but I cannot. I feel that sometimes I want to print out an individual students' grades so that I can show them which assignments are missing, or below grade level. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** Of all the systems I've used in schools for grading, this is one of the easiest to use. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am able to quickly see student attendance and average grades. It is also easy to upload student behavior with the management tool. I love the daily attendance and the fact that I can see the whole child's attendance at a glance. ### 10. Their support team is also very responsive and excellent for answering questions and troubleshooting issues that arise, and I like that you don't have to call them. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** Alma's progress report system is extremely clunky and frustrating, and there are features that could be implemented to make things easier but they aren't open to beta testing. The formatting for progress reports is a system where you enter information into a pivot table excel sheet (which is extremely time consuming), then upload, and then check it against the template once done. My biggest issue is that we have 5 different categories, and there is no easy way to create a "page break" within these, so that all the sub categories are listed on the same page (or even a way to say, "title, continued" at the top so it is less confusing). Again, this may be due to our usage as we have each class with their own template and these templates change for every progress report, but it's extremely time consuming and frustrating for me. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** Make sure it suits your needs. I think us being a small, independent private school with different style progress reports (read: not actual grades) limits the use of the features that Alma provides in regards to progress reports. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Attendance reporting is the biggest thing, but it's possible we're not using all the features. ### 11. I am not a computer engineer or have any more than basic computer skills, but I am able to navigate my way through Alma without too much difficulty. If I do run into something I don't know how to do there are great tutorials and the support is quick to respond and very helpful. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** There are a few features that are not available to us because we are an international school in Korea. The one we would most like to use is the SMS feature. However Alma is regularly updating and improving things and I'm sure they will get to this too. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** I would definitely recommend Alma to any school, we are a small international school and it has helped us to communicate with students and parents, keep track of all student information and everything else a good SIS does. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are using Alma as our school's Student Information System (SIS), it is a great way to consolidate a lot of useful things to our school in one place. I also like the accessible attendance menu on the home page, and how you can access who last went and checked the attendance. Having student safety information handy is good to have around too. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** Most times it can be confusing for me to transfer grades from one class to the next. I would like to see some individual markers for each course I have, so I can tell which is which. While the site has its ups and downs in terms of usability, I do enjoy being updated on the changes being made to Alma's website. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** This is probably one of the more user-friendly interfaces for education management out there. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** While I'm not in a position that solves the business issues at our school, I can safely say that I see Alma as a really innovative and accessible teaching assistance tool. It is a very easy to use interface and the layout and organization is excellent. I was first drawn to the SIS because of the google classroom integration (which is a game changer creating a true LMS and SIS combined system that inform one another). Beyond this I can't say enough good things about the customer service. They are prompt, on the ball and so very easy to work with. All Principal's can relate to this last bit as the truth is not all Ed Tech companies make it that easy. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** There is nothing I dislike but I have made suggestions they have been receptive to and this is a wonderful thing. One suggestion I have made is adding an assignment rubric function, which could be quantified and integrated to gradebook. They were very interested in this and have been looking at it. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** Think about what your goals are and have a conversation with their staff. It is very customizable and easy to make edits when needed. It's easy to set up and train a person who isn't too tech savvy. It is easy to navigate, pretty self-explanatory. I love the help section and how it caters to all learning types. I also really like how things are documented in real time. No back dating. Not to mention Alma has a great support team. I love how we can copy info over to another school year as well. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** I dislike how we are unable to take attendance if they left early in the first half (they way we have it set up) I wish we were able to search by user-defined fields. I dislike that we cannot create custom reports and run attendance reports similar to "Class Attendance-ALL" but include the student in that report. In the view attendance section on the student profile I dislike how it counts a missed/late period as a missed day, I would like it to be separate. As often when I go in there I'm looking for the absences for the entire day. I manually have to find and count those.That's all I can think of for now. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** Do it! **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are solving everything we are currently utilizing Alma for. Alma by far was better than either. It requires no coding on the part of the school, is super easy for teachers to use, and is continually being improved based on the needs of the school. I feel that information and data should form teaching so, the reporting option came in handy throughout the year. The site is fast and logical, meaning you don't have to do a lot of searching to find the information or page that you need. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** I wish students could turn in their electronic assignments directly to ALMA and I would be able to grade it within the system. Our previous grade books (Brainhoney, Google Classroom, Buzz) have allowed this in the past which made it possible for students and parents to verify that their work was turned in or not. It would also be nice to be able to distribute assignments through ALMA that are larger than what is currently allowed. It was easier to use a different platform that allowed me to upload all of my documents rather than use ALMA for some, but not all assignments. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** Having an electronic dropbox to submit files. Allowing more room/data space to distribute files. It would be nice if we could distribute assessments (multiple choice, matching, essay, etc) on this platform and collect data from those assignments. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Attendance was electronically kept this year. It's true that it requires virtually no training and can easily be used "out of the box". Report cards are beautiful and easy to customize; we have standards-based report cards with long narratives, and Alma does a wonderful job with these. The mobile site works seamlessly--I often send school-wide announcements from my phone. Customer service is outstanding. We typically get a response to our questions within minutes, and they are very friendly and responsive to our requests. Overall, a very positive experience for school administrators. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** Alma is still adding features and does not do as much as some of the more complex platforms. LMS features are limited; we find that it really works best as an SIS in its current incarnation. That said, its simplicity works very well for us as a small school. They do what they do well. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** It's an excellent program as long as you carefully consider what features your school needs. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Streamlined operations and communications; standard-based report cards; minimal training required for faculty and staff. ### 30. They can see specifically which categories their students are struggling with and we can address issues with certain assignments as well. It's great so that report cards at the end of the term aren't a shock. **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** I wish the most recent assignments were closest to the student's names, instead of the oldest assignments. I find myself doing a lot of extra scrolling back and forth. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Alma acts as our gradebook for the elementary school. With the kind of school system we use, it is so helpful for other teachers to know how students are doing in their group classes. I like being able to not have to refer to pages of notes when I go to add the next school year. Every year and many times throughout the year they are adding new features and continuing to improve what they already have. I like being able to send out an email to all students and parents without having to log into my email. When I send out report cards parents can respond to that email and let me know if they have any concerns or questions. Customer service has always been great and respond in a timely manner! **What do you dislike about Alma SIS?** I really have nothing I dislike. I believe they are always going to continue to improve their product and will stay current with what works best for educators and the education system. **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Since switching to Alma the school has been able to do a better job of communicating with parents because it is so easy for the teachers and the administrators to reach out via email. We can also pull the data that we need in regards to students who are failing classes or kids that are struggling with their attendance. Alma is a great platform to use everyday. We link our Google Classrooms and our grades show up like 'magic'. Students enjoy being able to see their daily and weekly schedule. I enjoy being able to access it from home or at school. There is an option to link your lessons to Alma along with state standards. I haven't tried this yet, but after doing the tutorial, it seems pretty easy. It's difficult to find the info quickly. **Recommendations to others considering Alma SIS:** Give yourself plenty of time if transitioning from another SIS, have firm deadlines with your staff as far as cut-off for old SIS, familiarize yourself with the program before going live by checking the study guides and videos (as well as any on-site training you might schedule). **What problems is Alma SIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We can see at a glance our demographics and classroom counts - it is concise and makes placement of new enrollees much easier and our accuracy in reporting is greater. The ease of pulling reports and data for import into other software has increased my productivity and efficiency. ### 38.
