It lacks the specific features I wanted, despite having an in-depth tagging system.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

There is nothing I don't like about the app thus far.

  ### 5. Wonderful organizational app

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ramya P. | Clinical Associate, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

For my position I have to use a combination of things to stay organized. I used Ulysses when I first found it a little while back for personal note keeping. I alternate now between this and One Note for work but prefer this personally due to the sleeker appearance.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

The subscription is quite high per year. I would like to see slightly different plan options from what's offered now

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Becoming much more organized and streamlined in work and my personal life. I am the type of person who really needs notes and thrives on them. Apps like this make my life much easier

  ### 6. Can’t be beaten for IOS, pity it’s not for Windows

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris C. | Business Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2021

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Excellent use of the iPad screen and good used of working windows when shopping between chapters.

I use Scrivener on my desktop, which is very different and Ulysses is better when working on the iPad

Good total word count feature, when you eventually found it.

Interesting grammar and spell checker. I now integrate Grammarly with it via a keyboard, which works a treat.

On the whole it's a great piece of software at a manageable price

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Somewhat bizarre access to things like total word count, though it's very good once the fog of the help system clears enough to point the way.

Not a great grammar checker, but it provides a starting point.

If it was available on Windows it would be nice to use across platforms ... sadly it's not

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's easier to use on the iPad than Scrivener, and the workspace is crisp and clean

  ### 7. My Favorite Writing Tool for Organizing Text and Notes

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bryan M. | Product Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2021

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Choosing software for writing is a personal choice. I have used Ulyssess before they were a subscription pricing model and continue to use them now because they offer the cleanest interface, features like writing goals, and a library that is very easy to organize and search.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

I still end up using Google Docs with colleagues sometimes, but would prefer to stay in Ulysses if I could, although they don't have the same level of collaboration features that Google Docs offers.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeping text and notes organized in one place and editable from any device

  ### 8. An intuitive and clean App that let's you write and not get caught up in a big learning curve

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

This app is simple and easy to learn and use.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

It might be nice if there were some clear-cut integrations for saving to the cloud.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ulysses is helpful in that I can post my work to many different blogs such as Medium, Ghost, etc. This sames time and a lot of effort.

  ### 9. Beautiful Documents

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Creating documents has never been easier with Ulysses!

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

I wish the interface were a bit more user-friendly - the design could be sleeker.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In the virtual world that we work in, creating documents and forms of media are necessary. Ulysses makes it simple!

  ### 10. Best Writing Application in the Appstore!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian M. | Communications Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2020

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I love the clean interface, customizability, markdown support of the Apple ecosystem, Keyboard and Mouse support and the support to students.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

There is no option to save under Ulysses server, instead you have to save to the iPad, iCloud or Dropbox. This creates an inconvenience as I have to make sure that I am saving to the right place and syncing my devices to the right service.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

If you are considering changing to Ulysses, I would think about what devices you use frequently and your priorities in regards to having a system that is cross platform, available on the web, tag support and or ease of sync. Ulysses as of right now only supports the Apple Ecosystem ( Mac OS, iPad OS, iOS and Watch OS ) you won’t be able to access on the web or on windows platform.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

If you struggle writing or would love an beautiful interface that combines functionality and clean design I’d totally recommend Ulysses. The interface inspires you to type away, and with the features such as focusing on a line, automatic dark / light mode support and markdown, it makes it easier to just focus on what you are thinking and typing. It’s a beautiful experience!

  ### 11. It has a pleasant visual interface, focused on improving user visuality.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** javier a. | Administrador de redes, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2019

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

This software is very intuitive and has a very pleasant interface visually, it is based on the orientation of the text generators in the direction of the digital area, it does not have an extensive list of menus on the contrary you have the availability of your text manager so from your keyboard It is a very useful program that many users use for the daily use of our work.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

It is a very expensive program in reality, it has its free version but it does not have the same freedoms, which brings its premium version. usually presents some failures in terms of synchronization with other programs or adaptations of other text managers, this usually occurs very little since most tools are already compatible with this great software.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

Recommended for Apple computer users. From any device, iPad, Macbook or iPhone we can download and use this great, very friendly manager that will allow us to do a better job. It is a tool that will undoubtedly facilitate your work by allowing you to create and edit documents wherever you are.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is a very clean and useful tool, at work I use it to manage my office documents in a very practical way. In turn, it allows me to easily copy text from other text managers and integrate the content in a practical and useful way. It is an exclusive software for Apple computers and we can get it and download it from your application store, it has a free version and its paid version with multiple text management tools

  ### 12. Perfect for content writers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Writing and Editing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 22, 2019

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I like the cross-platform integration and icloud sync so I can work on the go.

The theming is really important to me. I have a dark-mode set up with large text, so it's easier on my eyes.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

The goal-tracking functionality is sometimes laggy/buggy and crashes the app. I wish you could track more than one metric at a time with the goals feature.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

It's great for short form work like blog posts, okay for long work like novels. Good for people that are overwhelmed by Scrivener's bells and whistles.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm using Ulysses to draft content for Medium.com. I really love the integration with Medium, so I can easily upload content to the website with one click. The formatting in Markdown carries over, so that's really helpful. All I have to is click the publish button then it appears in my drafts on Medium. Then I can add links and images with a few clicks.

  ### 13. Great for Notetaking

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Holly G. | Co-Instructor Lockhart Correctional Facility , Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2019

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I love the ability to create simple and streamlined folders of notes without a lot of clunky features.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Nothing! It really has been great for my note taking though I don't normally compose in Ulysses but instead in google docs ot Scrivener

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

MAke folders for everything!

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using it as storage for academic notes because many other notes software is feature heavy and expensive.

  ### 14. A winner for fiction and tech

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Writing and Editing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 03, 2019

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I like the clean, simple interface that lets me focus on writing. The iCloud integration is also really important to me.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Sometimes copying text from other applications into Ulysses messes up line breaks or other special characters.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use this application for drafting articles as well as for keeping notes and snippets for my fiction in one place.

  ### 15. A Terrific Writer's Tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mark David G. | Author, Speaker, Creativity Catalyst, Entertainment, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 11, 2018

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

That it syncs content to all my devices. It's important to me to be able to access my writing project on whichever device is convenient without worrying about version confusion.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

I have had some technical challenges when dealing the back-up feature and when migrating my account to a new laptop.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

If you're a writer on the Mac/iOS platform looking for software that's easy to use and syncs effortlessly via iCloud to all your devices, this good be a good candidate for you. Just bear in mind that it bypasses Finder in favor of its own file structure. In some instances, that can be confusing. Having said that, customer support has generally ben very responsive and helpful in navigating any problems that I have encountered. Bear in mind, too, that Ulysses now operates on a subscription basis, which may be a deal-breaker for some.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm an author, and Ulysses allows me to move effortlessly from laptop, to iPhone to iPad on any given writing project. As well, RTF exports then import seamlessly into Indesign for the book's design and layout.

  ### 16. Very useful lightweight text editor

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bakari C. | Web Designer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 04, 2018

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I’ve used Ulysses off and on for over five years. I prefer it over applications like Word, Pages, and TextEdit. I like that Ulysses allows me to keep documents inside the application, which means I can work on longer projects and manage parts and chapters as separate "sheets" rather than one long file. I also especially like "Typewriter Mode" which keeps the text in the middle of the file so that I don't have to look or scroll down to keep typing. It's also useful that there's a iOS version Ulysses which means I can read documents on my iPad and iPhone. Moreover, I like Ulysses allows me to select which documents I want to sync to iCloud and which I want to keep on my local device.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

The subscription model is pricey, and there are really not useful benefits for subscribing. I get that developers need to make money for the work they do, but now they have set it up so that you can edit documents without paying the subscription fee. Would also like the ability to hide documents that I'm not using, but don't want to delete.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

Make use of the various tutorials about Ulysses on YouTube.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ulysses helps with me with longer writing projects, and often like proofreading drafts on my iPad, which means I don't have to print documents to read and edit them. It's also great because I don't have keep separate files for numerous documents. I can keep them all in inside the application.

  ### 17. MarkDown enabled editor with iCloud sync

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marius S. | Fullstack Developer, Photo/Videographer, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 09, 2018

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses is based around the MarkDown language, and it synchronizes with your iCloud account, to make your scripts available on every device you own. They even have a mobile app for iPads, so you can write anywhere. There is an option to export your texts directly to your Medium blog as an article.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Recently they switched from one-time license payment to a monthly subscription, which makes it more expensive in the long run.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

Good option for writers, especially with the distraction-free mode that hides everything else, allowing you to focus on the writing task.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It it a fast text editor, and it also renders MarkDown tags in a word processor style. There is an option of organizing multiple sections or articles into folders or chapters, for better document management.

  ### 18. Great writing experience combined with awesome backup feature

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 01, 2018

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses allows a tree like structure with multiple levels. It also automatically backs up to the icloud.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

I didn't like that I paid upfront and they then changed it to a subscription model.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

Best writing app for the Mac

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I do business writing in ulysses e.g. blog posts, developing training material.

I also use it to record lists like books to read and so on.

  ### 19. Simple, focussed writing ecosystem

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Writing and Editing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 03, 2017

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I like that it is more bicycle than SUV. It is a straightforward writing environment--read distraction free in modern shop talk--that allows you to focus on writing words and not fiddling with hundreds of menus and unnecessary options (like Word and imitators). For those familiar with markup languages, there is support for Markdown.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

I dislike that the default storage mechanism is to store it in a central database. Also, while it has Markdown support, it doesn't currently support other markup languages; they say this is coming but they've been saying that for a while.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

This is one of the best options if you want to get writing done and don't want to get distracted by the writing environment. Others are Scrivener and Sublime Text. Ulysses is maybe smack dab in between those two. Fewer features (and distractions) than Scrivener but not quite as lean and configurable as Sublime Text.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Writing copy. It's great to have a focused tool with some features. Again, think a nice bicycle to get somewhere. Or a motorcycle. You can get anywhere with that.

  ### 20. The greatest, writer-focused, writing software yet.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nicholas G. | Principal, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2016

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses transforms your relationship to your writing software. Unlike a word processor, where you pick and futz and monkey around with formatting, fonts, and grid, Ulysses enables you to focus on the content, the words on the page. Formatting is handled simply through markdown, an easy to learn and easy to type structured markup; it takes minutes to learn. Meanwhile, templates enable you to export to PDF, ePUB, or .docx formats when you're ready to "publish."

It's extremely innovative sheets concept takes minutes to get used to, but then, again, transforms your thinking away from documents and towards components.

In addition, their sync to iPad and now iPhone is extremely well executed.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Currently the export formats, if you're a front end develop and you like to code, take more CSS know how then the average person would expect. A styles editor that created the CSS would be great.

There are no logical sections, yet: so formatting documents in different grid systems — two columns, one column, etc — isn't yet supported in a single document.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before Ulysses, I strugged with writing in word processors: I was constantly distracted with styling the text, rather than writing the message. Now, I'm on focus, and on point, and far more productive.

  ### 21. A Markdown writing app that gets out of the way

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Taurean B. | Product Designer, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 16, 2016

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses manages to accomplish the often impossible task of allowing the kind of customization users say they want without deteriorating the beauty of the application along with its usability.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

I personally wish there was a way to hide markdown formatting altogether. For example, if I write `*bold*` just show bold text, not the asterisks around it. If My cursor is within that word, then show the formatting to make editing easy for the user. I imagine that would be a very complex thing to implement but its something that I would absolutely love.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

Get the companion iOS apps to manage your work on the go. The custom keyboard allows for really easy formatting and navigation.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ulysses serve the same business problem as any other markdown writer, the ability to focus on ideation and content instead of presentation (without feeling like you're sacrificing it altogether). The amazing thing that comes with sheets is that it allows you to _visually_ separate content with effectively page-breaks without you truly creating separate markdown files. Ulysses has the power to help you plan an organize a document like word or pages without the time consumption in basically formatting/designing while you write.

  ### 22. The best writing experience, ever.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brad C. | Creative, Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 19, 2016

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses offers an easy and clean writing environment that is entirely customizable and incredibly usable. Because documents are stored as sheets instead of separate documents in some folder, you can hop around between “files” easily from the sidebar. Everything is searchable, and it’s simple to create new file “groups” for organization. Everything is synced through iCloud and available on iPad and iPhone. I really like being able to customize my work environment and create visual styles that match my mood. Because it uses markdown, it makes formatting easy and it looks really great. In particular, I like the typewriter scrolling that keeps the line that I’m typing in the dead center of my screen.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Creating export styles isn’t very easy. I would like to modify exported texts so I can better control the look, but it’s just not simple like everything else. This isn’t a big deal, however, because many users have created cool export styles.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

If you’re familiar with Markdown, this is the best app you can get. I’ve never worked with a better writing app, and now that it’s available on iPad and iPhone, you can create and edit your writing from wherever.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ulysses allows me to write in a clean environment from my MacBook, iPad or iPhone, and quickly move through documents by searching or using “structures/bookmarks.” Ulysses is incredibly well designed and looks great; this motivates me to write more often than I might otherwise. Currently the copywriting and editing that I do is done primarily in Ulysses — any longform content is copy/pasted in so I can work with it in a better environment than Word or its clones.

  ### 23. Delightful UI and experience, disappointed with the Markdown dialect.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 29, 2016

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses interface and attention to typography helps me get in "the zone" really quickly. The full screen mode is exceptionally well done. Unlike a WYSIWYG editor, Ulysses uses a custom dialect of Markdown and gives you syntactical hints. This helps you to focus on content, rather than wasting time formatting text.

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Still some bugs that need to be worked out: iCloud sync is insanely slow (possibly a Yosemite issue?), there's no way to hide the search bar (it resurrects on every restart), and the custom markdown dialect is awful. I really wish they had gone with a standard dialect, like MultiMarkdown, or at least support the CommonMark standards. I do a lot of tech blogging, so the funky dialects for code blocks, raw source, etc. mean I always have to do some post work in vim to tidy things up.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

If you're looking for a great writing experience (research, outline, and editing phases) and are tired of concentrating on formatting details, Ulysses is for you. The beautiful templates for output and markdown syntax make this a match made in heaven. Just wish the team would move away from non-standard dialects that cost me tedium.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use it for note taking, tech blogging, and outlining.

  ### 24. Ulysses evangelist now

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joshua M. | Pianist & Accompanist, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 29, 2016

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

Ulysses is hands down the cleanest word processor I have ever used. I'm not a coder, but it took me just a couple minutes to get the hang of Markdown and start writing. The beauty of this program is that it is a word processor for the digital generation: there aren't ugly palettes blocking my view, nearly everything can be done on the keyboard (from italic to print preview), and it has a true distraction-free mode that is 110% better than Pages. Because only the essential format elements can be inputted (bullets or bold, i.e.), there are almost no formatting errors that will haunt me later, like having inconsistent font sizes or accidentally italicizing a space. All of the final touches happen when you're actually finished with the creative work, and it's as simple as choosing a style and exporting.

Ulysses is one of the more expensive programs, but it is seriously worth it. Get it and love it! Thanks Soulmen for one incredible app I use every day!

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Nothing about the Mac app, though I was disappointed when Daedulus, a paid app, just stopped working soon after the full iPad version was launched.

**Recommendations to others considering Ulysses:**

This software seems like it's too simple to be a heavy writing tool, but it is packed with hidden features while letting you use the entire screen to write.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I create tons of resumes and publish documents for my professional website, and the clean factor of Ulysses gets rid of most of the mistakes I find when I finally publish.

  ### 25. Great Writing App

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 21, 2016

**What do you like best about Ulysses?**

I like how minimalistic the whole thing is, really gives me room to write

**What do you dislike about Ulysses?**

Sometimes it feels a bit hard to navigate, but that feeling is rare.

**What problems is Ulysses solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps solve writers block by freeing up your brain from other things. Also lets your write on the go.
