Maxqda: Finding a Needle in a Haystack. It really helps when you’re trying to locate that “needle in the haystack” and pull out what matters. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** There are a few drawbacks. First, you can no longer purchase a perpetual license. The company ended perpetual licenses after Maxqda 22, and I think this is a mistake. With a one-year license, if you spend countless hours working on a project and then your license expires, you won’t be able to edit that project again in the future unless you purchase another one-year license. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** My colleagues and I use Maxqda almost daily in our policy unit. After building a database of documents we regularly need to draw on, it’s very easy to retrieve information and quickly find previously vetted and approved language and expressions. It has been a huge time-saver for our team and has significantly improved our workflow. ### 2. We currently use single-user licenses, which allows multiple researchers to work independently on different projects while following a shared analytical framework. From a system and license management standpoint, the setup has been straightforward and stable, with no major technical issues during installation and activation. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** Managing collaboration across multiple single-user licenses can be challenging, especially when researchers need to work on the same project. Project sharing and merging work is possible, but it is not as seamless as modern cloud-based collaboration tools. From an IT standpoint, more robust multi-user or team-based collaboration features would significantly improve efficiency and reduce administrative overhead. In contrast, MAXQDA is extremely user friendly and the free tutorials in YouTube clearly explain how to navigate and use different features, in case something is not self-evident. For me, the greatest feature is that the different tools are integrated in a way that allows you to visualize the data easily: the creative coding tool, the summary grid / table and different kinds of coding maps are neat features that help you see your data more easily. As far as the actual app and its interface, I am 100% satisfied. However, please read my comments on the transcription software. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The transcription software is expensive and and artificially un-intelligent. Some examples: the same speaker is identified as S1, S2 and S4 in the same transcript. In a group interview with 3 participants, the AI recognized 9 different voices, and it would not recognize an exchange between two speakers at times, putting a whole exchange as a single sentence. For instance: "Do you feel at home here? Home. Yeah. I don't. Why not? People are unfriendly". As a result of this, transcript cleanup and editing for a 1-hour interview took me about 1.5- 2 hours per transcript, and in some cases I had to listen to the whole interview. Avoid this, as you are better off transcribing by hand or using a different transcription software. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** N/A ### 5. During the coding process, it is extremely intuitive, especially with emoticodes and color codes (underlining), in addition to the usual coding system. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The constant version changes (2018, 2020, 2022) make it difficult to afford them and stay updated. It can handle a wide range of document formats and employs an excellent PDF reader/editor tool that allows easy coding and data retrieval when using PDF documents. The software's search features allow users to quickly locate single terms or complex combinations of words and codes, and autocode documents. I use Maxqda at work for climate-related policy research, and in work for non-profits for the analysis and sorting of ethnographic research data. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The software is a powerful tool that should be more frequently used by businesses and government research or analysis units to reveal connections among documents and help workers locate information buried amongst hundreds of textual documents. Because MAXQDA is quite costly, it is a barrier that detracts from more widespread use. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have used MAXQDA on many diverse projects. One biographical project about an artist required linking hundreds of pages of text to related photographs and sections of video, all of which were stored in separate folders. MAXQDA allowed us to create a database that illumated the relationships amongst the diverse materials and enabled researchers to easily locate similar textual, video, photographic, and audio materials. I am exploring the use of MAXQDA for identifying video footage for use in a documentary film. I have used it in government work to identify similar themes in hundreds of reports and presentations, and letters about drought and extreme weather impacts and climate action. ### 8. I also like the different levels of codes which facilitates the organization, especially with larger files and dataset. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** I came across glitches sometimes that can be frustrating. Although MAXQDA saves projects automatically, there have been instances of the software freezing or slowing down, even on small datasets. I would also like if visuals could be a bit more user-friendly, there are sometimes hard to create. Lastly, I would like to see an automatic transcription option, instead of having the user type in interviews and focus groups. I also wish tutorials and professional learning development would be more accessible. Although I came across beginner tutorials for MAXQDA, I would like to see more specific professional learning development with specific goals and targets. For instance, I would like to be able to use visuals more; however, it sometimes becomes overwhelming and difficult without guidance. **Recommendations to others considering MAXQDA:** I would strongly recommend MAXDQA to other users. Its price and its user-friendly interface make MAXQDA much more accessible than other similar software. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** Much easier to organize large qualitative datasets. It is also easy to retrieve quotes or segments. Capable of complex analysis and other features but can be as simple as you'd like as well. Offers an affordable license for students which is great since universities, depending on which program or school you're in, often only provide access to quantitative tools but qualitative. Also provides a free reader application so you can always review and access your work (can't change anything) even without a license. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The way it saves your work can be a bit confusing at first and can cause some anxiety about whether it saved properly or not, though once you get used to it it is not an issue. **Recommendations to others considering MAXQDA:** They offer a 1-month trial, so use it for a month, even if you're just exploring how to use it, you'll be able to figure everything out and assess if it meets your needs. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** Being in a field where qualitative work is not as common and training is limited or non-existent, (public health), being able to purchase an affordable 2-year license as a student is great. Additionally, compared with other qualitative software, MAXQDA is far easier to manage and learn. ### 16. Would not have been able to complete the research without the capabilities that MAXQDA provided. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The least helpful thing about MAXQDA was the ability to see real time changes. It had some capability for this, but honestly could deceive us into thinking we were seeing the most recent copy and potentially were not. Also, because of the security considerations for this product, we had to upload copies in a way that was confusing and sometimes the work we did was saved to the wrong place. Not sure if this was due to MAXQDA or if it was due to how our system was set up. This did contain HIPAA information, so it could have been related to that. Beyond that, there isn't really much I can think of in terms of negatives. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am doing public health research and using MAXQDA to code and analyze many transcripts/interviews of information. I had to click back and forth between YouTube and MAXQDA in order to follow the video guides, which was time consuming and tedious. You also kind of need to know already what it is you're looking to do. As an undergraduate, I wasn't familiar enough to do that efficiently. It’s easy to share documents and support collaborations. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The word frequency data tool could be improved if the program automatically eliminated connectors and other words that are frequently used but usually not relevant for this context (e.g., the, and, I) **Recommendations to others considering MAXQDA:** Worths the money, especially if you qualify for student pricing. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** I mostly use it for coding semi-structured interviews. I love that I can select any code and immediately see any piece of data that was coded using that one. It makes writing up and organizing so much easier. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** There's really nothing I dislike about this software, so far. **Recommendations to others considering MAXQDA:** MaxQDA takes some time to learn, but once you learn to navigate it, it is invaluable to qualitative analysis. Sometimes it's helpful to use multiple codes within a piece of data. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** MaxQDA makes it easier to count how many times a certain code was used, for example. The color tabs and organizational system make it much easier to get a visual representation of the codes and sub-codes. ### 35. The interface is fairly intuitive. it's easy to load documents and accepts lots of file types including images. Codebooks are relatively easy to set up. You highlight text and then drag and drop to code which supports easy coding. There is some ability to work in teams by merging projects or important just parts of a project like new codes or coded documents. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** The teamwork options are not as seamless as they could be. You have to set up coding in a particular way or merges do not work properly. We find there are not as much functionality as we would like when comparing coding results between different coders. also it would be ideal to have an option where you support easier cross-coding by keeping the same units of text the first coder chose but removing information about what they coded that segment as. **Recommendations to others considering MAXQDA:** I would consider what your needs are with qualitative coding. There are other coding softwares out there, but I believe most have fairly similar functionality. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** MaxQDA allows for much faster coding than older methods using pen/highlighters and paper. A lot of additional time is saved during iterative coding and combining results among multiple coders. There's also a lot of tutorials and other materials online available for troubleshooting because it's a widely-used software for this purpose. ### 36. You can reorganize codes and even mark them with symbols or different colors. The program will auto code according to excel columns and formatting. It is also easy to assign variables using an excel table or change codes to variables. Moreover, you can search for a word or phrase and code either just the word or the surrounding sentences. The package that includes the dictionary and statistics represents good value for money. **What do you dislike about MAXQDA?** MAXQDA can't deal with xml tagging in the sense that it isn't possible to automatically assign variables based on tags or only search certain parts of a file. It also lacks a feature which would automatically combine marking if, e.g., the same word appears twice in the same sentence. Finally, it can't import emails. **Recommendations to others considering MAXQDA:** Think about the type of data you will be using and what you will want the product for. It is great for some types of research, but other research questions it doesn't handle so well. **What problems is MAXQDA solving and how is that benefiting you?** Qualitative Data analysis of interviews and various types of discourse for academic research projects. I would have worked well with the interviews, but not the more complicated projects with large amounts of textual data.. ### 38.
