# Which low-code platforms work best for financial services or insurance companies that need auditability and compliance baked into their workflows?

Compliance requirements change the low-code calculus entirely. We're looking at low-code development platforms specifically through the lens of financial services and insurance, where auditability, process governance, and regulatory traceability aren't optional add-ons but baseline requirements.

Here are the platforms that come up in FS and insurance contexts:

Appian: By far the most referenced platform in financial services and banking reviews, with reviewers describing it as the tool they use for loan origination, account opening for legal entity clients, private equity transaction management, and compliance workflow automation. The process audit trail and BPM layer are cited as the reasons it fits regulated environments. One banking reviewer describes using it to automate Excel-based manual processes across compliance workflows. Financial services reviewers note an estimated payback period of 6-12 months. Does the compliance architecture require significant Appian-specific configuration to get right?

OutSystems: Enterprise reviewers in financial services describe using it in contexts with strict governance and auditability requirements, specifically calling out centralized lifecycle management, controlled environments, and dependency tracking as what allows teams to move quickly without losing traceability. The proprietary platform commitment is a trade-off that requires intentional architectural decisions.

ServiceNow App Engine: Appears in enterprise FS contexts where ServiceNow is already the ITSM backbone. The governance and access control layer within the platform is consistent with regulated environment requirements, but the value proposition is much lower if you're not already on ServiceNow.

Quickbase: Insurance reviewers describe using it to build audit tracking apps for Medicaid compliance, tracking which areas of member files are failing audit checks and using that data to guide training. The granular access control and centralized data layer make it viable for compliance-adjacent use cases, though it's less purpose-built for regulated financial workflows than Appian.

For teams in financial services specifically, what compliance features have you found to be genuinely useful versus ones that are more checkbox than functional? And have any of you had to defend a low-code build to a regulator or auditor?

<p><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">In regulated workflows the interesting line isn't which platform has an audit trail; most claim one, it's whether the trail is something you can actually hand an auditor without a project to reconstruct it. Governance that's baked into how the app runs holds up very differently from governance you bolt on afterward. For the FS folks here, has anyone actually had a low-code build examined in an audit, and did the traceability survive it?</span></p>
