# Which HCM software gives employees self-service for enrolling in benefits and accessing pay information?

Plenty of vendors claim "self-service," but the real test is whether an employee can actually finish something start to finish without HR stepping in partway through. What we're hoping to find:

Benefits enrollment an employee can complete entirely on their own, without a paper form or a follow-up email to HR

Instant, on-demand access to current and historical pay stubs, not a request-and-wait process

Enough self-correction built in that small errors (a missed clock-in, a wrong address) don't require an admin ticket

A layout simple enough that a non-technical employee actually uses it instead of defaulting back to email

A few platforms that keep showing up on this specific question, within the G2 HCM Software category:

Gusto: Reviewers describe instant paystub access and income verification that let employees "bypass the operations team" entirely, plus self-service onboarding where new hires complete direct deposit and tax forms themselves.

Rippling: Reviewers highlight being able to check pay, review benefits, and clock in and out without contacting HR for "every small question," with one calling the reduced back-and-forth the platform's biggest day-to-day benefit.

Paylocity: Reviewers point to benefits integration that eliminates paper forms during open enrollment specifically, with employee deductions and mid-year changes feeding through automatically.

BambooHR: Reviewers describe booking leave, checking balances, and updating personal details independently, though more than one flagged a need for clearer visibility into pending versus approved time-off balances.

For anyone who's tracked adoption after rollout: did self-service enrollment actually cut down HR's benefits-season workload, or did employees still call with questions once they hit an edge case the interface didn't anticipate?

The closing question has a specific answer worth naming: self-service reduces HR workload for the happy path, but HR time was never mostly spent on the happy path. Open enrollment for a single employee with no changes works everywhere; the ticket still gets filed for the mid-year qualifying life event, the dependent whose documentation won't upload, or the correction that needs someone's approval. So the thing to evaluate isn't whether an employee can enroll unassisted, it's what the tool does with the exception: does it route it with context attached, or does it dead-end into "contact HR" and restart the conversation from zero?
